Chapter 1: Harrison Takes Control

Chapter 1: Harrison Takes Control

Khloe's voice trembled as she looked across the polished mahogany desk.

"What am I supposed to do?"

For several seconds, Harrison Cole didn't answer.

The silence inside his Manhattan office felt heavier than words ever could. Beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city glowed beneath the evening sky, millions of lights flickering like stars. Normally, Harrison loved this view. It reminded him that every skyscraper, every corporation, every powerful executive believed they were untouchable.

He had spent twenty years proving they were wrong.

Tonight, however, he wasn't looking at the skyline.

He was looking at his little sister.

The same little girl who used to chase him through their parents' backyard wearing oversized rain boots.

The same teenager who begged him to teach her how to drive.

The same woman who now sat before him, six months older than when he'd last truly seen her, carrying the child she'd fought so desperately to have.

She looked exhausted.

Not physically.

Soul-deep exhausted.

Her shoulders were slumped beneath an oversized cream sweater. Her hands instinctively rested over the gentle curve of her stomach, as if shielding her unborn daughter from a world that had already betrayed her.

Harrison slowly closed the tablet containing hundreds of screenshots.

Photos.

Bank transfers.

Hotel reservations.

Messages that mocked Khloe's miscarriages.

Conversations discussing divorce as though it were another business transaction.

He placed both hands on the desk.

"First," he said quietly, "you stop believing you've lost."

Khloe stared at him.

"I have lost."

"No."

"You haven't seen everything."

"I've seen enough."

"My husband—"

"Your husband," Harrison interrupted, "made one mistake."

Khloe almost laughed.

"One?"

"He underestimated who he married."

For the first time that evening, confusion replaced despair in her eyes.

Harrison leaned back.

"Richard Harrington thinks you're just another wealthy wife who'll sign whatever his attorneys put in front of you because you're emotional."

"He has no idea."

"No idea of what?"

Harrison's expression remained perfectly calm.

"That you're my client now."

Three hours later...

A black SUV rolled through the gates of the Harrington estate.

Richard's Mercedes was already parked outside.

Perfect.

Khloe's heartbeat quickened.

"I don't think I'm ready."

"You don't need to be."

Harrison stepped out first.

His reputation often entered rooms before he did.

Six foot three.

Tailored charcoal suit.

Silver tie.

Expression carved from granite.

He wasn't intimidating because he raised his voice.

He was intimidating because he never needed to.

The front door opened before they reached it.

Richard appeared with practiced concern painted across his face.

"There you are."

He forced a smile.

"I've been calling all evening."

His eyes shifted toward Harrison.

"...Harry."

"Harrison," came the correction.

Richard nodded awkwardly.

"I didn't know you were in town."

"I wasn't."

An uncomfortable silence followed.

Richard looked toward Khloe.

"Are you alright?"

She searched his face.

Only yesterday she would have believed the concern.

Now every word sounded rehearsed.

"I'm fine."

"You scared me."

Did I?

She wanted to ask.

Instead, Harrison answered for her.

"She won't be staying here tonight."

Richard frowned.

"What?"

"Khloe is leaving."

"For a few days?"

"No."

The single syllable landed like a judge's gavel.

"She's leaving permanently."

Richard blinked.

"I think there's been some misunderstanding."

"There hasn't."

Harrison handed him a thick envelope.

Richard glanced down.

His smile faded.

"What is this?"

"A litigation hold notice."

His forehead creased.

"You've been advised not to destroy, alter, conceal, transfer, delete, or otherwise tamper with any financial records, electronic communications, cloud storage, mobile devices, corporate documentation, or personal property related to your marriage."

Richard slowly lowered the envelope.

"This is ridiculous."

"It isn't."

"You don't even know what's going on."

"I know exactly what's going on."

Khloe watched the two men.

One had built skyscrapers.

The other had destroyed empires.

Only one of them looked comfortable.

Richard laughed nervously.

"So we're playing games now?"

Harrison's face never changed.

"I don't play games."

Inside the foyer, silence stretched across imported marble floors.

House staff quietly disappeared into adjoining hallways.

Even they sensed something irreversible had entered the house.

Richard folded his arms.

"What exactly are you accusing me of?"

Harrison didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he slowly removed another folder.

He placed it on the antique entry table.

"Open it."

Richard hesitated.

Then did.

The first page contained color photographs.

A luxury resort in St. Barts.

Richard.

Vanessa.

Kissing beside a private infinity pool.

His face drained of color.

He turned another page.

Hotel invoices.

Flight manifests.

Jewelry purchases.

Another page.

Text messages.

Another.

Offshore wire transfers.

Another.

Shell corporations.

By page twenty-three, his hands had begun shaking.

He looked up.

"How did you get these?"

Harrison ignored the question.

"Do you know what impresses me most?"

Richard said nothing.

"You planned everything."

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"The shell companies."

Silence.

"The Cayman accounts."

More silence.

"The false consulting agreements."

Richard swallowed.

"You've been busy."

"I have."

"You can't prove anything."

Harrison smiled.

It wasn't a pleasant smile.

"I haven't even started proving things."

Across town...

Vanessa Kensington admired herself in the mirror.

She wore one of Richard's shirts.

His penthouse overlooked the Philadelphia skyline.

Soon, she reminded herself.

This would all belong to them.

She rested both hands against her own stomach.

Ten weeks pregnant.

Everything was finally happening according to plan.

Richard had promised the divorce would be finalized before summer.

Khloe would receive the old mansion.

They would keep the money.

Simple.

Clean.

Perfect.

Her phone rang.

Richard.

She answered with a smile.

"Miss me already?"

His voice came through strained.

"We have a problem."

Her smile disappeared.

"What happened?"

"Harrison knows."

"...Knows what?"

"Everything."

She laughed.

"So what?"

"You don't understand."

"No, you don't understand."

She rolled her eyes.

"She's emotional. You're rich. She'll take a settlement."

Richard's breathing grew heavier.

"You've never heard of Harrison Cole."

"I've heard enough."

"No."

His voice became almost desperate.

"You haven't."

Meanwhile...

Harrison and Khloe sat inside the SUV as it pulled away from the estate.

Neither spoke for several minutes.

Finally, Khloe whispered,

"Was that enough?"

Harrison looked out the window.

"No."

"What happens now?"

He answered without hesitation.

"Now..."

"...we make sure Richard Harrington never has another peaceful night's sleep."

Khloe frowned.

"I don't want revenge."

Harrison finally looked at her.

"You misunderstand me."

His voice remained calm.

"I'm not seeking revenge."

"Then what?"

"I'm seeking accountability."

He reached into his briefcase.

Another folder.

Thicker than the last.

"This is only one investigation."

Khloe stared.

"There are more?"

"There are six."

Her eyes widened.

"What are they?"

"Civil fraud."

He held up one finger.

"Tax evasion."

A second.

"Securities violations."

A third.

"Construction bribery."

Fourth.

"Insurance fraud."

Fifth.

"And conspiracy."

The sixth finger lowered.

Khloe couldn't breathe.

"You've already investigated him?"

"I started three hours ago."

"That's impossible."

Harrison almost smiled.

"You'd be surprised what people can find when billionaires believe they're invisible."

He handed her the folder.

Inside were photographs she'd never seen before.

Politicians.

Developers.

Cash exchanges.

Confidential emails.

Fake invoices.

"What is all this?"

Harrison answered quietly.

"The beginning of the end."

The following morning...

Richard stormed into Harrington Commercial Group headquarters twenty minutes early.

His executive assistant immediately stood.

"Good morning, sir."

"Cancel everything."

"Even the investor—"

"Everything."

He slammed his office door.

His phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

He answered sharply.

"What?"

A calm male voice replied.

"This is Special Agent Daniel Mercer with the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division."

Richard froze.

"We'd like to schedule an interview regarding several international financial transfers."

His stomach dropped.

"There's been a mistake."

"Perhaps."

The agent paused.

"However..."

"...you're advised not to leave the country."

The line disconnected.

Richard slowly lowered the phone.

His hands were shaking again.

Impossible.

It had been less than twelve hours.

How?

Hundreds of miles away, Harrison stood inside his law firm's conference room.

Twenty-three attorneys waited silently around the table.

Some had worked with him for fifteen years.

Others had left prestigious federal agencies specifically to join his firm.

None had ever seen him call an emergency meeting before sunrise.

He looked around the room.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

A screen illuminated behind him.

Richard Harrington's photograph appeared.

Beside it...

Vanessa Kensington.

Then dozens of financial charts.

Corporate structures.

Property records.

Bank accounts.

Harrison folded his hands behind his back.

"Our objective is simple."

Everyone listened.

"We are not merely winning a divorce."

He clicked the remote.

Another hundred documents appeared.

"We are dismantling an empire built on deception."

The room remained silent.

Harrison's eyes grew colder than steel.

"I want every fraudulent transaction uncovered."

Click.

"Every hidden account frozen."

Click.

"Every accomplice identified."

Click.

"And every law enforcement agency provided with evidence they cannot ignore."

One young associate hesitated.

"Sir..."

Harrison looked toward him.

"If everything here is true..."

"...this could destroy Harrington Commercial forever."

Harrison didn't blink.

"It should."

He glanced once more at his sister's smiling wedding photograph displayed on the screen.

The picture lingered only a second before he turned it off.

"Richard Harrington spent years building his empire."

His voice became almost frighteningly soft.

"I'm going to make sure it collapses faster than he ever imagined."

Far away, Richard stood alone in his corner office, staring out over the skyline that had once represented limitless success.

For the first time in his life...

The city no longer looked like it belonged to him.

It looked like a prison with no walls.

And somewhere in that same city...

Harrison Cole had just made the first move.

Richard still believed this was a divorce.

He had no idea...

May you like

It was the opening battle of a war he had already begun to lose.
