Chapter 8: The Hunt Begins

Chapter 8: The Hunt Begins
The sun had not yet risen over Philadelphia when Harrison Cole returned to his office.
He had not slept.
He had not changed out of the suit stained with his sister's blood.
Only the dried crimson on his cuffs had darkened overnight.
Twenty-three attorneys were already waiting in the firm's main conference room.
No one spoke.
No one dared ask how Khloe was.
They had all seen the news.
The woman who had survived years of heartbreak...
...had nearly lost her life on the courthouse steps.
Harrison entered carrying only one folder.
He placed it quietly on the conference table.
"The baby survived."
A collective sigh of relief swept through the room.
Marcus Bennett leaned back in his chair.
"And Khloe?"
Harrison's expression remained calm.
"She's stable."
"But she's not out of danger."
Silence returned.
Harrison slowly looked around the room.
"Yesterday was not merely an assault."
He paused.
"It was an attempt to silence my client."
No one disagreed.
"And beginning today..."
"...we stop reacting."
"We hunt."
He walked toward the digital display mounted on the wall.
One click of the remote illuminated a web of names, photographs, companies, and financial records.
Richard Harrington.
Vanessa Kensington.
Harrington Commercial Group.
Stonebridge Development Solutions.
Twelve shell corporations.
Three offshore trusts.
Seven unidentified beneficiaries.
The screen resembled a spider's web.
Every thread connected to Richard.
Harrison folded his arms.
"Our objective has changed."
A young associate asked carefully,
"What is the priority?"
Harrison answered without hesitation.
"Find everyone."
"Everyone?"
"Every accountant."
"Every attorney."
"Every executive."
"Every politician."
"Every banker."
"If they knowingly helped hide stolen assets..."
"...I want evidence."
Marcus smiled.
"The empire doesn't collapse without its pillars."
Harrison nodded.
"So we remove the pillars."
Across town...
Richard finally arrived at Harrington Commercial headquarters.
The lobby felt strangely empty.
Employees avoided eye contact.
Several whispered as he passed.
He entered the executive elevator alone.
His reflection stared back from polished steel.
Dark circles surrounded his eyes.
His tie hung crooked.
For the first time in years...
He looked like a man under investigation.
The elevator doors opened.
His assistant stood waiting.
"Good morning, sir."
"Anything urgent?"
She hesitated.
"There are... several developments."
"How many?"
She handed him a printed list.
Eight banks requesting additional documentation.
Three investors canceling meetings.
Two board members demanding emergency votes.
One federal subpoena.
Richard exhaled slowly.
"What else?"
"The stock is down eleven percent."
His jaw tightened.
"Before the market even opens?"
"Yes."
At the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit...
Tiny monitors beeped softly.
Khloe's daughter lay inside a clear incubator.
She weighed barely five pounds.
Her tiny fingers curled instinctively around Harrison's index finger.
The nurse smiled.
"She has a strong grip."
Harrison stared at the little girl.
"So did her mother."
The nurse looked toward him.
"Have they chosen a name?"
He smiled faintly.
"Not yet."
"What would Khloe want?"
He remembered something his sister had once told him.
"If I ever have a daughter..."
"...I want her name to remind her that hope survives anything."
He whispered,
"Hope."
The nurse smiled.
"It suits her."
Meanwhile...
Vanessa sat inside the county detention center.
Orange walls.
Metal table.
No makeup.
No designer clothes.
No phone.
No control.
The public defender entered carrying several documents.
"They've filed formal charges."
Vanessa swallowed.
"What charges?"
"Aggravated assault."
She closed her eyes.
"Anything else?"
"Reckless endangerment."
The attorney hesitated.
"And because the victim was thirty-six weeks pregnant..."
"...additional enhancements are possible."
Vanessa whispered,
"I didn't mean to hurt her."
The lawyer nodded.
"I believe you."
"The jury may not."
Back at Harrison's office...
Marcus hurried inside carrying another folder.
"We found the accountant."
Harrison looked up.
"Which one?"
"The one who created Stonebridge Development Solutions."
"Name?"
"Leonard Briggs."
"Where is he?"
Marcus smiled.
"Trying to leave the country."
Philadelphia International Airport
Gate A17.
Leonard Briggs nervously checked his watch.
His passport rested inside his jacket pocket.
His flight to the Cayman Islands boarded in thirty minutes.
One-way ticket.
No checked luggage.
No intention of returning.
He glanced around the terminal.
Everything looked normal.
Families.
Business travelers.
Vacationers.
No one paying attention.
He finally relaxed.
Then he heard a familiar voice.
"Mr. Briggs?"
His heart stopped.
Two federal agents approached calmly.
One displayed a badge.
"We'd like a few minutes of your time."
Briggs forced a smile.
"I think you've mistaken me for someone else."
The second agent already held his passport.
"No."
"I don't believe we have."
Three hours later...
Inside an interview room...
Leonard Briggs stared at the evidence spread before him.
Tax records.
Bank transfers.
Email chains.
Corporate registrations.
One document after another.
The lead investigator leaned forward.
"Mr. Briggs..."
"...you have two choices."
Briggs remained silent.
"You can protect Richard Harrington."
He pointed toward the growing stack of evidence.
"Or you can protect yourself."
Briggs laughed bitterly.
"You've already got everything."
The investigator smiled.
"Not everything."
"What are you missing?"
"The truth."
At the hospital...
Khloe slowly opened her eyes.
Everything felt heavy.
The room blurred in and out of focus.
She immediately reached toward her stomach.
Empty.
Panic flooded her face.
Harrison was beside her instantly.
"She's alive."
Khloe looked at him.
"The baby?"
"She's alive."
Tears rolled silently down her cheeks.
"Can I see her?"
"Soon."
She closed her eyes again.
"I thought..."
"You don't have to think about yesterday."
"I remember falling."
Harrison gently squeezed her hand.
"You don't need to remember the rest."
Her voice became barely audible.
"What happened to Vanessa?"
He answered honestly.
"She's in custody."
Khloe remained silent for several moments.
Finally...
"Don't hate her."
Harrison looked at his sister in surprise.
"She nearly killed you."
"I know."
"Then why?"
Khloe stared toward the window.
"Because hatred is what brought us here."
He didn't answer.
Not because he disagreed.
But because he wasn't sure he was capable of forgiving what had happened.
Late that afternoon...
Marcus burst into Harrison's office.
"We've got him."
Harrison looked up from the hospital paperwork.
"Briggs?"
Marcus nodded.
"He wants immunity."
"For what?"
"He says Richard didn't create the offshore network."
Harrison's eyes narrowed.
"Then who did?"
Marcus slowly placed a digital recorder on the desk.
"You should hear this yourself."
He pressed play.
Briggs' trembling voice filled the room.
"Richard wasn't the mastermind."
Silence.
"He inherited the system."
Harrison leaned forward.
The recording continued.
"The money has been moving for almost twenty years."
Marcus watched Harrison carefully.
"It started before Richard became CEO."
The room suddenly felt much colder.
Harrison asked quietly,
"Who built it?"
Marcus answered with two words.
"His father."
Richard Harrington Sr.
Founder of Harrington Commercial Group.
Philanthropist.
State Business Hall of Fame inductee.
Beloved community leader.
Dead for nearly seven years.
Or so everyone believed his legacy to be.
Harrison slowly closed the file.
What had begun as an ugly divorce...
Had become a decades-old conspiracy.
The fraud wasn't one man's crime.
It was an inheritance.
An empire passed from father to son.
Outside Harrison's office window, the city lights flickered to life as evening settled over Philadelphia.
Somewhere across town, Richard still believed he could survive by sacrificing Vanessa.
He had no idea the investigation had just reached beyond him...
...to the foundation on which his family's fortune had been built.
And once foundations cracked...

Even the tallest towers eventually fell.
