Chapter 6: The Push

Chapter 6: The Push

The courthouse clock struck 11:47 a.m.

The first hearing had ended less than twenty minutes earlier.

Lawyers poured into the marble hallway carrying briefcases and stacks of legal documents.

Reporters rushed to file breaking stories.

Court clerks hurried between offices.

Outside, a crowd had gathered behind metal barricades, hoping for one final glimpse of Pennsylvania's most talked-about divorce.

No one realized history was about to change.

Khloe stepped through the courthouse doors with Harrison walking beside her.

The crisp autumn air felt cooler than it had that morning.

She inhaled deeply.

"I didn't think I'd make it through today."

Harrison glanced at her.

"You did more than that."

"I was shaking the whole time."

"You never showed it."

She smiled faintly.

"I learned from my big brother."

For the first time in days, Harrison almost smiled.

"You always were the braver one."

Marcus Bennett approached with a folder tucked beneath his arm.

"We've confirmed the second beneficiary."

Harrison accepted the file.

"I'll read it in the car."

Marcus nodded.

"You should also know..."

He lowered his voice.

"Federal investigators are already reviewing today's testimony."

"That was fast."

"They've been waiting."

Inside the courthouse...

Richard remained frozen outside Courtroom 4B.

William Foster placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Listen to me."

Richard stared blankly ahead.

"We still have options."

"What options?"

"We cooperate."

Richard laughed bitterly.

"Harrison already has everything."

William didn't answer.

Because he wasn't sure that was true.

He feared something worse.

That Harrison had only shown enough evidence to force mistakes.

And Richard had already begun making them.

At the opposite end of the hallway...

Vanessa paced anxiously.

She had spent nearly an hour waiting for Richard.

Every passing minute fed her growing frustration.

When she finally spotted him leaving the courtroom, she hurried toward him.

"What happened?"

"Not now."

"Richard."

"I said not now."

She grabbed his arm.

"You promised we'd talk."

He pulled free.

"You shouldn't even be here."

Her expression hardened.

"I've lost clients."

"I know."

"I'm being investigated."

"I know."

"My reputation is ruined."

"I know."

"Then do something!"

Several nearby attorneys turned to look.

Richard lowered his voice.

"You're making this worse."

Her eyes filled with anger.

"No."

"Your wife is making this worse."

Richard's face tightened.

"Leave Khloe out of this."

Vanessa stared at him in disbelief.

"You've got to be kidding."

Outside...

Khloe slowly descended the wide marble staircase with Harrison walking only a step behind.

The courthouse plaza stretched before them, crowded with journalists and onlookers.

A deputy sheriff called out,

"Please keep the center walkway clear."

The crowd shifted.

Camera shutters clicked continuously.

Khloe instinctively rested one hand on her stomach.

The baby kicked.

She smiled.

"She always moves after stressful days."

Harrison looked down.

"She's reminding you she's here."

Behind them...

The courthouse doors burst open.

Vanessa emerged, her heels striking the stone with sharp, hurried steps.

She scanned the crowd until she found Khloe.

Standing peacefully beside Harrison.

Talking quietly.

Smiling.

Something inside Vanessa snapped.

She had lost contracts.

Friends had stopped answering her calls.

The media had turned her into a villain.

And there stood the woman she blamed for all of it.

Vanessa ignored the reporters calling her name.

She walked faster.

Then faster still.

Marcus noticed her first.

"Harrison."

He turned.

Vanessa was already halfway across the landing.

"Khloe!"

Her voice echoed across the staircase.

Khloe turned slowly.

Vanessa stopped only a few feet away.

"You think you've won?"

Khloe answered quietly.

"This isn't the place."

"No."

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"You've ruined everything."

"I didn't ruin anything."

"You told him!"

"I told my lawyer the truth."

"You told your brother."

"Yes."

Vanessa's breathing became uneven.

"You could've taken the money."

Khloe stared at her.

"My marriage isn't something you buy."

More people began watching.

Reporters instinctively lifted their cameras.

A deputy started moving toward the women.

"Harrison..."

Marcus warned.

But Harrison had already started walking.

Steady.

Calm.

Closing the distance.

Vanessa stepped closer.

"You think you're innocent?"

Khloe remained still.

"I never claimed that."

"You wanted him back."

"No."

"You wanted to destroy us."

Khloe slowly shook her head.

"I wanted my child to grow up with honest parents."

The words landed harder than a slap.

Vanessa's face twisted with rage.

"You self-righteous—"

"Ms. Kensington."

Harrison's voice was calm.

"This conversation is over."

She ignored him.

"You have no idea what you've done!"

Khloe answered softly,

"I do."

"I finally stopped pretending."

The deputy was only a few steps away.

"So is everyone finished here?"

he called.

Harrison reached Khloe.

"Let's go."

She nodded.

They turned toward the stairs.

Then—

Vanessa grabbed Khloe's arm.

"You're not walking away from me!"

Khloe instinctively pulled back.

"Let go."

The movement lasted barely a second.

A flash of anger.

A violent shove.

Two hands striking Khloe's shoulder.

A gasp from the crowd.

Time seemed to stop.

Khloe's eyes widened.

One hand reached desperately toward her stomach.

Her foot found nothing but empty air.

"Harry—!"

Her cry echoed across the courthouse plaza.

Then her body fell backward.

One step.

Two.

Three.

Momentum took over.

She tumbled helplessly down the long marble staircase.

The sickening sound of her body striking stone silenced the entire plaza.

A collective scream erupted.

"Harrison!"

Marcus shouted.

But Harrison was already moving.

He sprinted down the stairs faster than anyone thought possible.

His briefcase crashed onto the marble.

Documents scattered into the wind.

He dropped to his knees beside Khloe.

Blood spread beneath her.

Bright red against white stone.

His hands trembled as he gently cradled her head.

"Khloe..."

Her eyes fluttered.

She tried to speak.

No words came.

Only pain.

Harrison fought to keep his own voice steady.

"Look at me."

"You stay with me."

"Do you hear me?"

She blinked weakly.

"My baby..."

"I know."

"My baby..."

"We're going to help her."

Tears streamed down Harrison's face.

The man feared by governors, billionaires, and corporate titans could do nothing except hold his little sister.

"Please..."

Khloe whispered.

"Don't let her die..."

Someone yelled,

"Call an ambulance!"

Another voice shouted,

"She's pregnant!"

The deputy dropped beside Harrison.

"EMS is on the way."

Marcus knelt nearby, glaring toward the top of the stairs.

Vanessa hadn't moved.

She stood frozen.

Both hands still outstretched.

Her face drained of all color.

"I..."

she whispered.

"I didn't..."

Richard slowly approached her.

"What did you do?"

"I didn't mean—"

"What did you do?"

She looked down at her own hands as though they belonged to someone else.

Sirens wailed in the distance.

The sound grew louder.

Closer.

Faster.

Paramedics rushed up the staircase carrying emergency equipment.

One carefully checked Khloe's pulse.

Another assessed the pregnancy.

The lead medic looked at Harrison.

"We need room."

Harrison didn't move.

"Sir."

Nothing.

Marcus finally placed a hand on Harrison's shoulder.

"They need to help her."

Reluctantly, Harrison released his sister's hand.

Her fingers slipped from his grasp.

Leaving streaks of blood across his cuff.

As the paramedics lifted Khloe onto a stretcher, one of them suddenly looked up.

"We're losing the baby's heartbeat."

The words hit Harrison like a physical blow.

"No..."

The medic spoke urgently into his radio.

"Trauma alert."

"Thirty-six-week pregnancy."

"Possible placental abruption."

"Prepare emergency surgery."

The ambulance doors slammed shut.

Sirens screamed.

Then it sped away.

Silence settled over the courthouse steps.

Only one sound remained.

The clicking of dozens of cameras.

News helicopters circled overhead.

Reporters spoke breathlessly into live broadcasts.

No one had expected to witness a tragedy.

But everyone had.

Harrison slowly stood.

Blood stained both knees of his tailored suit.

His palms were scraped raw from the marble.

He looked toward the top of the staircase.

Vanessa still stood there.

Unable to move.

Unable to speak.

Their eyes met.

For several endless seconds, neither said a word.

When Harrison finally spoke, his voice was terrifyingly calm.

"You should pray."

Vanessa swallowed.

"For what?"

He answered with icy precision.

"That my sister survives."

He paused.

"Because if she does..."

"...you'll spend the rest of your life answering for what happened today."

"And if she doesn't..."

He didn't finish the sentence.

He didn't have to.

The look in his eyes said enough.

Not vengeance.

Not rage.

But absolute certainty.

Vanessa suddenly understood something that chilled her more than the handcuffs already closing around her wrists.

She had not just pushed a pregnant woman.

She had attacked the one person Harrison Cole loved more than his own life.

May you like

And nothing in either of their lives would ever be the same again.
