Chapter 10 — The Man Who Pushed Claire

Chapter 10 — The Man Who Pushed Claire
The first thing Claire noticed was Ethan's silence.
He didn't defend himself.
He didn't ask Jonathan to explain.
He didn't even look angry.
He simply stood beside the hospital window, staring at the rain.
That frightened her more than denial would have.
“Ethan.”
He turned.
“Claire.”
“Did you know?”
His jaw tightened.
“Know what?”
“That Jonathan was alive.”
“No.”
“That he was my father.”
“No.”
“That my mother knew him.”
“I suspected.”
“Did you know about the ring?”
“No.”
“Did you know Lena existed?”
“No.”
Claire stepped closer.
“Then why does everyone keep warning me about you?”
Ethan looked at her.
“I don't know.”
Jonathan spoke from behind them.
“Because someone wants you to.”
Claire turned.
Jonathan was watching Ethan carefully.
“You're certain he didn't know?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Because if Ethan knew, he would have come for you years ago.”
Ethan looked at him.
“Thank you.”
Jonathan's expression hardened.
“Don't thank me.”
“Why?”
“Because I haven't decided whether I trust you either.”
Ethan nodded.
“Fair.”
Claire looked between them.
She was exhausted.
Every answer created another question.
Then Lena's monitor began beeping faster.
Claire turned immediately.
Doctors rushed inside.
“She's crashing.”
Claire moved toward the bed.
“What happened?”
“Her blood pressure is dropping.”
The doctor looked at the nurse.
“Get the surgical team.”
Claire grabbed Lena's hand.
“Stay with me.”
Lena's eyes opened.
She looked at Claire.
Then at Ethan.
Her lips moved.
“Don't…”
Claire leaned closer.
“What?”
“Don't let him…”
Her eyes closed.
“Who?”
But Lena had already lost consciousness.
Claire looked at Ethan.
He looked devastated.
Two hours later, Lena was stable.
Claire sat alone in the hospital corridor.
Ethan approached.
“Can I sit?”
She nodded.
He sat beside her.
For a while, neither spoke.
Then Ethan said:
“You don't trust me.”
Claire looked at him.
“I want to.”
“That isn't the same thing.”
“No.”
He looked down.
“I deserve an explanation.”
“Yes.”
“But I don't have one.”
Claire studied him.
“Tell me about your father.”
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“What do you want to know?”
“Everything.”
Ethan took a breath.
“My father was complicated.”
“That's what everyone says.”
“He was a good detective.”
“Was he?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did he disappear?”
“I don't know.”
“Why did he lie?”
“I don't know.”
“Why did he know my mother?”
“I don't know.”
Claire stared at him.
“You don't know anything.”
Ethan looked at her.
“I know one thing.”
“What?”
“My father loved someone he couldn't have.”
Claire's heart tightened.
“My mother?”
“Yes.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I found his letters.”
Claire froze.
“Letters to her?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“In the storage unit.”
“What did they say?”
Ethan pulled out his phone.
He showed her a photograph of a letter.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Evelyn,
I know you are afraid.
I know you think the only way to protect Claire is to disappear.
But if you disappear, Thomas wins.
Claire read the next line.
I would rather die than let him take our daughter.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Our daughter.”
Ethan nodded.
“He knew.”
Claire stared at the screen.
“Then my mother lied to him.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To protect you.”
Claire shook her head.
“Again.”
Ethan gave a sad smile.
“Yes.”
A nurse approached.
“Ms. Whitmore?”
Claire stood.
“Yes?”
“There is someone asking for you.”
“Who?”
The nurse looked uncomfortable.
“He says his name is Daniel.”
Claire's heart stopped.
“Daniel?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Parking garage.”
Morgan appeared immediately.
“Don't go.”
Claire looked at him.
“He's my father.”
“Exactly.”
“Then I need to talk to him.”
Morgan shook his head.
“No.”
Jonathan stepped out of the room.
“Let her go.”
Morgan stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because Daniel wants her to know something.”
“What?”
Jonathan looked at Claire.
“He wants her to know who pushed her.”
Claire froze.
“Pushed me?”
Jonathan nodded.
“The night you came back to the estate.”
Claire remembered.
The balcony.
Eleanor screaming.
Someone grabbing her arm.
The fall.
Ethan catching her.
She had assumed Eleanor pushed her.
Then the security footage had shown something else.
A shadow.
A second person.
“Who pushed me?”
Jonathan's expression darkened.
“Daniel knows.”
Claire went to the parking garage.
Ethan followed.
Morgan followed them both.
Daniel stood beside a black car.
He looked older.
Tired.
His clothes were dirty.
His face was bruised.
Claire ran toward him.
“Where have you been?”
Daniel looked at her.
“I had to disappear.”
“Why?”
“Because they were coming.”
“Who?”
“The people wearing the ring.”
Claire froze.
“Did they hurt you?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I remembered.”
“Remembered what?”
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“Your father.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“What about him?”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Jonathan didn't kill Evelyn.”
“I know.”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You don't.”
“What don't I know?”
“Jonathan wasn't there when she was shot.”
Claire stared.
“But the photograph—”
“Was staged.”
Silence.
“By whom?”
Daniel looked at Claire.
“Your grandfather.”
Claire's stomach dropped.
“Why?”
“To frame Jonathan.”
“But why?”
“Because Jonathan had discovered the organization.”
“What organization?”
“The people behind the ring.”
Claire felt cold.
“Who are they?”
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't know their name.”
“But you know their leader.”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Your grandfather.”
Claire froze.
“That's impossible.”
“No.”
“He was controlled by them.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“That was the lie.”
Claire couldn't breathe.
“He controlled them?”
“Yes.”
“But the ring…”
“Belonged to him.”
Claire stared.
“Then why did he frame Jonathan?”
“Because Jonathan refused to obey.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“What did my father refuse to do?”
Daniel looked at him.
“He refused to kill Claire.”
Ethan's face went white.
Claire stared.
“What?”
Daniel continued.
“Your grandfather ordered Jonathan to kill you.”
Silence.
Claire felt dizzy.
“When?”
“When you were seventeen.”
Ethan looked horrified.
“My father would never.”
“He didn't.”
“What happened?”
“Jonathan disappeared.”
Claire remembered.
The night of her graduation.
The man at the gate.
Eleanor taking her away.
She had thought it was Thomas.
It had been Jonathan.
Her father had been watching her.
Trying to protect her.
Daniel continued.
“Your grandfather couldn't control Jonathan.”
“So he framed him.”
“Yes.”
“And my mother?”
“She helped Jonathan escape.”
“That's why she died.”
Daniel nodded.
“She knew too much.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“Who shot her?”
Daniel hesitated.
Claire looked at him.
“Tell me.”
“It wasn't your grandfather.”
“Then who?”
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“His mother.”
Ethan froze.
“My mother?”
Daniel nodded.
“Margaret shot Evelyn.”
Silence.
Claire stared at Ethan.
He looked shattered.
“Why?”
“Because Margaret believed Evelyn was going to destroy Jonathan.”
“What?”
“Margaret loved Jonathan.”
Ethan's face went pale.
“She was jealous.”
Daniel nodded.
“She believed Evelyn had manipulated him.”
Claire couldn't believe it.
“So she killed her?”
“She tried.”
“Then why didn't Jonathan kill her?”
“Because he took the blame.”
Claire stared.
“He protected Margaret?”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“He protected you.”
Claire's knees weakened.
Ethan caught her.
She pulled away.
“Don't.”
He stepped back.
“I’m sorry.”
“You knew?”
“No.”
“You swear?”
“Yes.”
Claire looked into his eyes.
He looked devastated.
For the first time, she believed him.
But the truth still hurt.
“My mother was killed because of a woman who loved my father.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
“And my grandfather covered it up.”
“Yes.”
“And Jonathan took the blame.”
“Yes.”
“And Eleanor helped.”
“Yes.”
“Then what about you?”
Daniel looked away.
“I helped too.”
“How?”
“I lied.”
Claire's voice broke.
“Everyone lied.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't anyone just tell me?”
“Because your grandfather threatened to kill you.”
Claire stared.
“He controlled everyone.”
“Yes.”
Daniel reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“This belongs to you.”
Claire took it.
Her name was written on the front.
Claire.
She opened it.
Inside was a single page.
Her mother's handwriting.
Claire began reading.
My darling Claire,
If you ever read this, then everything has failed.
Claire's vision blurred.
She continued.
You will probably hate everyone who lied to you.
You should.
But please don't hate your father.
Claire looked at Jonathan.
He stood in the distance.
Her mother had known.
Jonathan loved you before he knew your name.
He loved you when he believed you belonged to Daniel.
And he loved you enough to disappear when I asked him to.
Claire pressed the letter to her chest.
Then she read the final paragraph.
There is one person you must never trust.
Her heart stopped.
The sentence continued.
Not because they hate you.
Because they love you.
Claire stared.
The final line was underlined.
That is the most dangerous kind of betrayal.
A loud crash came from above.
Everyone looked up.
A car had smashed through the garage barrier.
Morgan shouted:
“DOWN!”
Gunfire erupted.
Daniel pushed Claire behind the car.
Ethan grabbed her.
Jonathan returned fire.
The attackers wore black masks.
One shouted:
“Get the girl!”
Claire froze.
“They're here for me.”
Ethan pulled her behind a concrete pillar.
“No.”
“Ethan—”
“You're not going anywhere.”
Another bullet struck the pillar.
Morgan fired back.
One attacker fell.
Another ran toward them.
Claire saw something on his hand.
A black stone ring.
She grabbed Ethan's arm.
“The ring.”
Ethan looked.
The attacker raised his weapon.
Ethan tackled him.
They crashed into the floor.
The gun skidded away.
The attacker reached for a knife.
Ethan caught his wrist.
Claire saw the ring clearly.
It wasn't just a black stone.
There was a tiny symbol carved into it.
A crown.
Claire stared.
The same symbol appeared on the trust documents.
The same symbol appeared beneath her grandfather's signature.
The same symbol appeared on the back of her mother's photograph.
Claire whispered:
“My grandfather.”
The attacker looked at her.
Then smiled.
“You finally understand.”
He pressed something beneath his tongue.
Morgan shouted:
“Don't let him swallow it!”
Too late.
The man's body went rigid.
He collapsed.
Dead.
Claire stared in horror.
“What did he take?”
Morgan checked him.
“Poison.”
Ethan looked at Claire.
“They would rather kill themselves than talk.”
Claire shook.
“This has gone too far.”
Jonathan approached.
He looked at the dead man.
Then at Claire.
“No.”
He pointed toward the elevator.
“This is only the beginning.”
The elevator doors opened.
Nobody was inside.
Except for a small package.
Claire approached cautiously.
A red ribbon wrapped around a black box.
She opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Claire stared.
It showed her mother.
Jonathan.
Eleanor.
Daniel.
Margaret.
And one other person.
A young man standing beside them.
Ethan.
Claire's breath stopped.
“That can't be.”
Ethan looked at the photograph.
His face went white.
“I was there?”
The date was printed beneath the picture.
Twenty years ago.
Ethan had been three years old.
Claire looked at him.
“You knew my mother before you met me.”
“No.”
“You were there.”
“I don't remember.”
Claire stared at the photograph.
Then she noticed something in the background.
A little girl.
Two years old.
Lena.
And beside her—
a man wearing the black ring.
Ethan looked closer.
Then whispered:
“I know that man.”
Claire turned.
“Who?”
Ethan's face had lost all color.
“My father.”
Claire's heart stopped.
Jonathan stepped closer.
“That isn't possible.”
Ethan shook his head.
“I remember now.”
“What?”
“The night my father disappeared.”
He looked at Claire.
“He came home covered in blood.”
Silence.
“What did he say?”
Ethan swallowed.
“He told my mother one thing.”
Claire waited.
“He said…”
Ethan's voice broke.
“I pushed Claire.”
Claire froze.
The parking garage went silent.
She remembered the balcony.
The hand on her back.
The fall.
Ethan catching her.
Her entire body went cold.
Because the man who had pushed her years ago—
might have been Ethan's father.
But then Claire noticed something else.
The photograph was twenty years old.
Ethan was three.
And the man standing beside him wasn't Jonathan.
It was someone who looked exactly like him.
Only younger.
Claire whispered:
“That's not your father.”
Ethan stared.
“What?”
She pointed at the photograph.
“The ring.”
The man wore it on his left hand.
Jonathan always wore his on his right.
Claire looked at Ethan.
“Someone has been impersonating your father.”
Jonathan's face changed.
“No.”
“What?”
He stared at the photograph.
“That man isn't Jonathan.”
“Then who is he?”
Jonathan's voice was barely audible.
“He's my brother.”
Claire froze.
“You had a brother?”
Jonathan nodded.
“And he died twenty-four years ago.”
Claire looked at the photograph again.
The man smiled.
Alive.
Standing beside her mother.
Standing beside Ethan.
Wearing the ring.
Then her phone vibrated.
One message.
YOU FINALLY FOUND HIM.
A second message appeared.
NOW ASK WHY ETHAN'S FATHER TOOK THE FALL.
Claire looked at Ethan.
He was already staring at her.
Neither spoke.
Because they both understood the same terrifying possibility.
Someone had been using Jonathan's identity.
Someone had manipulated Ethan's father.
Someone had pushed Claire.
May you like
And whoever that person was—
had been protecting the truth about Evelyn's death for twenty-three years.
