Chapter 13 — The Betrayal Ethan Never Expected

Chapter 13 — The Betrayal Ethan Never Expected
The room exploded into chaos.
Claire turned toward the doorway.
“Ethan?”
Nothing.
His coat was gone.
His phone lay shattered on the floor.
Morgan immediately drew his weapon.
“Lock down the building.”
Officers rushed toward every exit.
Claire grabbed Jonathan's arm.
“He was here.”
“I know.”
“He was standing beside me.”
“I know.”
“Then how did he disappear?”
Jonathan looked at the broken phone.
“He didn't leave willingly.”
Claire's heart hammered.
“Adrian.”
Jonathan nodded.
“Probably.”
Evelyn rushed toward them.
“What happened?”
“Ethan has been taken.”
Evelyn's face went pale.
“By Adrian?”
“We don't know.”
Claire looked at her.
“You said Adrian would come for me.”
“Yes.”
“Why did he take Ethan?”
Evelyn hesitated.
“Because Ethan is the one person you won't sacrifice.”
Claire froze.
Evelyn's expression changed.
“And Adrian knows it.”
Across the estate, a black SUV tore down the private road.
Ethan's hands were zip-tied behind his back.
A hood covered his head.
He could hear two men talking in the front.
“Is he awake?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Ethan tried to move.
A man struck him across the shoulder.
“Don't.”
Ethan gritted his teeth.
“Where are you taking me?”
No answer.
He heard a familiar voice.
“Somewhere you should have gone twenty years ago.”
Ethan froze.
He knew that voice.
Adrian.
The hood was pulled off.
Ethan blinked against the dim light.
Adrian sat across from him.
A pistol rested casually on his knee.
“You.”
Adrian smiled.
“You always were slow.”
“Where's Claire?”
“Safe.”
“Liar.”
“Not yet.”
Ethan stared at him.
“What do you want?”
Adrian leaned forward.
“The same thing your father wanted.”
“What?”
“Freedom.”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“You kidnapped me for freedom?”
“No.”
Adrian's expression hardened.
“I kidnapped you because Claire trusts you.”
“And?”
“I need her to make a choice.”
“What choice?”
Adrian smiled.
“The same one her grandfather gave her.”
“Destroy the empire or inherit it.”
Ethan stared.
“You want the trust.”
“I want what comes with it.”
“Power.”
“Control.”
Ethan shook his head.
“You're insane.”
Adrian smiled.
“Maybe.”
He stood.
“But your father wasn't.”
Ethan froze.
“What does my father have to do with this?”
Adrian walked toward a locked metal cabinet.
He opened it.
Inside were dozens of files.
One had Ethan's name.
Adrian placed it on the table.
Ethan stared.
“What's that?”
“Your life.”
He opened the file.
Birth records.
School records.
Medical records.
Photographs.
But one document made Ethan's blood run cold.
A handwritten note.
Ethan Hale must never know the truth about his mother.
Ethan looked up.
“Who wrote this?”
Adrian smiled.
“Your father.”
Back at the estate, Claire paced.
“He's been gone for thirty minutes.”
Morgan checked his phone.
“No ransom demand.”
“Then why take him?”
Jonathan looked at the broken phone.
“To make us believe Adrian did.”
Claire stopped.
“What?”
Jonathan pointed toward the screen.
“The phone was deliberately smashed.”
“So?”
“So whoever took Ethan wanted us to know.”
Evelyn whispered:
“It's a message.”
Claire turned.
“To whom?”
“To you.”
Claire's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
“Where is Ethan?”
A man's voice replied.
“You're asking the wrong question.”
“Adrian?”
“No.”
Claire froze.
“Then who?”
“Someone Ethan trusted.”
The call ended.
Claire looked at Jonathan.
“Someone he trusted.”
Jonathan's expression changed.
“His mother.”
Margaret Hale sat alone in a dark room.
Her hands trembled.
A glass of water sat untouched beside her.
A photograph lay on the table.
Ethan at age three.
She touched his face.
“I’m sorry.”
The door opened.
Adrian walked inside.
Margaret looked up.
“You took him.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because you couldn't control him.”
Margaret's face hardened.
“I never controlled my son.”
Adrian laughed.
“You controlled everyone.”
“Not him.”
“Then why did he believe you?”
Margaret didn't answer.
Adrian placed Ethan's file on the table.
“You lied to him for twenty-six years.”
“I protected him.”
“That's what everyone says.”
Margaret looked away.
Adrian leaned closer.
“Tell me where the final key is.”
“I don't know.”
“You do.”
“No.”
Adrian slapped the table.
“Where is it?”
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
“Ethan doesn't know.”
“That's not what I asked.”
She looked at him.
“The key is with Claire.”
Adrian smiled.
“Good.”
Ethan stared at the document.
“My father wrote this?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he knew you were dangerous.”
“I'm not.”
Adrian smiled.
“Not yet.”
Ethan looked at the photographs.
He saw himself as a child.
Then another photograph.
His mother.
Jonathan.
Evelyn.
Claire.
They were standing together.
Ethan frowned.
“Why am I here?”
“You were brought here that night.”
“Why?”
“To witness something.”
“What?”
“Your father giving up his life.”
Ethan's breathing changed.
“What happened?”
“Jonathan was ordered to kill Claire.”
“He refused.”
“Yes.”
“Then?”
“Your father took the blame.”
Ethan stared.
“But I thought he disappeared.”
“He was captured.”
“By whom?”
Adrian looked at him.
“Me.”
Ethan's blood ran cold.
“You killed him.”
“No.”
Adrian shook his head.
“I gave him a choice.”
“What choice?”
“Work for me or watch Claire die.”
Ethan stared.
“What did he choose?”
Adrian smiled.
“He chose Claire.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
His father had sacrificed everything.
And Ethan had spent years believing he had abandoned him.
“Where is he?”
Adrian didn't answer.
“Where is my father?”
Adrian looked away.
“Dead.”
Ethan's face tightened.
“You killed him.”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Adrian hesitated.
“Your mother.”
Silence.
Ethan stared.
“My mother?”
“She found him.”
“When?”
“After the estate fire.”
“What fire?”
Adrian looked at him.
“The fire that officially killed your father.”
Ethan's hands shook.
“He survived.”
“Yes.”
“My mother found him.”
“Yes.”
“And killed him?”
“No.”
Adrian looked toward the door.
“She tried.”
Claire reached the basement.
Jonathan followed.
“I know where they took him.”
“How?”
“There's an old tunnel.”
“Where does it lead?”
“To the Hale property.”
Claire stopped.
“That's where Adrian is.”
“Yes.”
“Then let's go.”
Jonathan grabbed her arm.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because that's exactly what he wants.”
“They have Ethan.”
“I know.”
“Then I'm going.”
Jonathan looked at her.
“Claire, listen to me.”
“No.”
“If you go there without understanding what Adrian wants, you will lose Ethan.”
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
“I can't lose him.”
Jonathan softened.
“Then don't.”
Evelyn entered.
“I know what Adrian wants.”
Claire turned.
“What?”
“The final key.”
“What key?”
“The key to the trust.”
“Where is it?”
Evelyn looked at Claire.
“You have it.”
Claire frowned.
“I don't.”
Evelyn pointed toward her neck.
Claire touched the necklace she had worn since childhood.
A small silver pendant.
“My mother gave me this.”
“Yes.”
“What is it?”
“A key.”
Claire froze.
She removed it.
The pendant opened.
Inside was a tiny black stone.
The same symbol.
The crown.
Jonathan stared.
“I thought that was destroyed.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“Your grandfather gave it to Claire the night before she disappeared.”
Claire looked at it.
“Why?”
“Because only you could open the trust.”
“How?”
“With blood.”
Claire's stomach turned.
“Blood?”
Evelyn nodded.
“The trust was biometric.”
“Why didn't anyone tell me?”
“Because Adrian would have killed you.”
Claire closed her hand around the pendant.
“Then he needs me.”
“Yes.”
“Which means Ethan is bait.”
“Yes.”
Claire looked at Jonathan.
“We go.”
Jonathan sighed.
“Then we go together.”
The Hale property was abandoned.
Or appeared to be.
Claire entered through the rear entrance.
Jonathan and Morgan followed.
Evelyn remained outside with the police.
The hallway smelled of smoke.
Old photographs lined the walls.
Claire recognized some.
Her mother.
Her grandfather.
Jonathan.
Adrian.
And Ethan.
A photograph of Ethan at age three had been torn in half.
Claire picked it up.
Someone had written beneath it:
THE BOY WHO SURVIVED.
She heard a noise.
“Ethan?”
No answer.
Then a voice came from upstairs.
“Claire.”
Adrian.
She ran.
Jonathan caught her.
“Slowly.”
They climbed.
A door stood open.
Inside, Ethan was tied to a chair.
Claire rushed toward him.
“Ethan!”
He looked up.
“Don't come closer!”
She stopped.
Adrian stood behind him.
A gun pressed against Ethan's head.
“Claire.”
“Let him go.”
“Not yet.”
“What do you want?”
Adrian smiled.
“The pendant.”
Claire held it up.
“This?”
“Yes.”
“You get it when Ethan is free.”
“No.”
“Then you get nothing.”
Adrian laughed.
“You still think you're negotiating.”
Claire looked around.
Cameras.
Two armed men.
A locked exit.
No obvious way out.
Then she noticed Ethan's eyes.
He was trying to tell her something.
She looked carefully.
His fingers moved.
One.
Two.
Three.
Claire understood.
Three seconds.
She looked at Adrian.
“Fine.”
She stepped forward.
“I'll give it to you.”
Adrian reached out.
Claire tossed the pendant.
Adrian caught it.
For one second, he looked down.
Ethan kicked the chair backward.
Jonathan fired.
Morgan rushed in.
Claire grabbed Ethan.
“Run!”
They sprinted toward the hallway.
Gunfire erupted behind them.
They reached the stairs.
A bullet struck the wall.
Ethan pulled Claire down.
“Go!”
“I’m not leaving you.”
“Claire!”
Adrian appeared at the top of the stairs.
He wasn't holding the pendant anymore.
Claire frowned.
“Where is it?”
Adrian smiled.
“You thought that was the key.”
Claire froze.
“What?”
He held up his hand.
The black stone pendant was gone.
“Then what did I just give you?”
Adrian laughed.
“A decoy.”
Claire stared at Ethan.
Ethan's expression changed.
“Claire…”
Adrian pointed the gun at him.
“Now tell me where the real key is.”
Claire understood.
The necklace had never been the key.
Someone had switched it.
She looked at Ethan.
Then at Adrian.
And suddenly remembered something her mother had said.
The person you trust most can be the most dangerous.
Claire whispered:
“Ethan.”
He looked at her.
“What?”
“Where is the real key?”
Ethan's face went white.
“I don't know.”
Adrian smiled.
“Yes, you do.”
Ethan shook his head.
“No.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“You've had it your entire life.”
Claire stared at Ethan.
“What does he mean?”
Ethan didn't answer.
Adrian laughed.
“Ask him about the scar.”
Claire looked at Ethan's wrist.
A thin white scar crossed his palm.
She had seen it before.
Years ago.
Ethan had told her it came from childhood.
But now she remembered.
Her mother's letter.
The photograph.
The night Ethan's father disappeared.
The key.
The scar.
Claire whispered:
“Your father hid it in you.”
Ethan looked at her.
“I don't understand.”
Adrian smiled.
“He had the key implanted under your skin.”
Ethan's face went white.
Claire stepped backward.
“What?”
Adrian raised his gun.
“Your father knew they would search Claire.”
“So he hid the key inside his son.”
Ethan stared at his own hand.
“No.”
Adrian laughed.
“Cut him open.”
Claire screamed.
“No!”
A gunshot exploded.
Adrian fell backward.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Ethan collapsed.
Claire caught him.
“Ethan!”
He looked at her.
“I didn't know.”
“I know.”
“I swear.”
“I know.”
He reached for her hand.
“Don't let them take me.”
Claire squeezed his fingers.
“I won't.”
Behind them, Jonathan stood holding the gun.
His face was grim.
But before anyone could speak, Adrian laughed.
He was still alive.
Blood spread across his shirt.
“You still don't understand.”
Claire turned.
“Understand what?”
Adrian smiled.
“The key isn't inside Ethan.”
Claire froze.
“Then where is it?”
Adrian looked directly at Jonathan.
“Ask your father.”
Everyone turned.
Jonathan's face went pale.
Adrian whispered:
“He never gave you the key.”
Claire stared at Jonathan.
“What does that mean?”
Jonathan lowered his weapon.
“I was going to tell you.”
“When?”
“After this.”
“No.”
Claire stepped toward him.
“Tell me now.”
Jonathan looked at her.
“The trust doesn't belong to you.”
Silence.
Claire's heart stopped.
“Then who owns it?”
Jonathan swallowed.
“You.”
She frowned.
“But you just said—”
“I said the trust doesn't belong to you.”
He looked at Ethan.
“It belongs to your children.”
Claire froze.
“I don't have children.”
Jonathan's eyes filled with sorrow.
“You did.”
Claire's face went white.
“What?”
Jonathan whispered:
“The night your mother disappeared…”
He paused.
“…you weren't alone.”
Claire stared.
“Lena wasn't the only child.”
Ethan looked at him.
“What are you saying?”
Jonathan's voice broke.
“Claire had a third sister.”
Claire couldn't breathe.
“Where is she?”
Jonathan looked toward the dark hallway.
“She was taken.”
“By whom?”
Jonathan closed his eyes.
“By Adrian.”
Adrian smiled through the blood on his lips.
“And she's still alive.”
Claire's world shattered.
Because the family she thought had been torn apart twenty-three years ago—
was even larger than she had ever imagined.
May you like
And somewhere in the darkness was another sister.
A sister who might be the final key to everything.
