Chapter 10 — The Hidden Room

Chapter 10 — The Hidden Room
At 11:47 p.m., Daniel disappeared.
Not from the street.
Not from a guarded building.
From the locked room where six security officers had been watching him.
One second he was standing beside me.
The next, the lights flickered.
And he was gone.
I screamed his name.
"Daniel!"
Marcus rushed into the room.
The officers searched the hallway.
Nothing.
No open door.
No broken window.
No alarm.
No footprints.
It was as if my husband had simply ceased to exist.
Then I saw something on the floor.
His wedding ring.
I picked it up.
My hands began shaking.
"He's alive."
Marcus looked at me.
"How do you know?"
"Because he would never leave this behind."
I closed my fist around it.
"Someone took him."
We searched the entire building.
Every room.
Every corridor.
Every staircase.
Nothing.
Then Marcus noticed something strange.
The security camera outside the room had stopped recording for exactly seventeen seconds.
"Seventeen seconds," he said.
"What happened?"
"Someone interrupted the feed."
"Can you recover it?"
"Maybe."
He pulled the recording apart frame by frame.
At first there was only darkness.
Then one image appeared.
A hand.
A black glove.
And behind it...
a wall.
Marcus zoomed in.
I recognized it immediately.
"That's St. Agnes."
He looked at me.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
"The old maternity facility."
I nodded.
"But we searched it."
"Not completely."
"What did we miss?"
He enlarged the wall.
There was a small symbol carved into the stone.
An eagle.
My father had the same symbol on the metal box he had hidden in my mother's house.
Marcus stared.
"The hidden room."
We returned to St. Agnes.
This time, we didn't use the main entrance.
Marcus found an old maintenance tunnel beneath the chapel.
The passage was narrow.
Water dripped from the ceiling.
The walls were covered with pipes.
After several minutes, we reached a steel door.
There was no handle.
Only the eagle symbol.
I pressed my palm against it.
Nothing happened.
Then I remembered the photograph my father had shown me.
The one of me as a baby.
On the back was a strange sequence of numbers.
I had thought they were a date.
They weren't.
They were coordinates.
Marcus entered them into the keypad.
The door opened.
A cold draft hit my face.
I stepped inside.
And stopped.
The room was enormous.
Bigger than the entire building above us.
Computers covered one wall.
Medical equipment covered another.
Thousands of paper files filled metal cabinets.
And in the center stood a glass chamber.
Inside was a single hospital crib.
Empty.
But above it was a name.
EMILY HALE.
I couldn't breathe.
Marcus whispered:
"They were studying you."
I shook my head.
"No."
I walked toward the glass.
"They were waiting for me."
A monitor suddenly activated.
A video began playing.
My father appeared.
He looked younger.
Maybe twenty years younger.
He was sitting in this same room.
"If you're watching this," he said, "then they have finally brought you here."
I stared at the screen.
His voice continued.
"I need you to understand something."
He paused.
"Your life was never an accident."
I felt tears burn my eyes.
"Your birth was arranged."
The video showed documents.
Medical charts.
Family trees.
Photographs.
Then one image appeared.
A newborn baby.
Me.
My father continued:
"When you were born, they discovered the genetic sequence."
He pointed toward the screen.
"Your DNA matched Eleanor's original bloodline."
I whispered:
"That's why."
The video continued.
"Richard wanted to take you."
My father's expression hardened.
"Victoria wanted to control you."
"And your mother wanted to protect you."
The screen changed.
My mother appeared.
Holding me.
Crying.
Then another photograph.
Daniel.
As a child.
Standing beside me.
I stared.
My father continued:
"They believed your marriage would create the final heir."
I closed my eyes.
"They were right."
The door behind us slammed shut.
Marcus turned.
"Who's there?"
A voice answered.
"Someone who has been waiting for her."
Victoria stepped out of the darkness.
Emerald dress.
Perfect hair.
No fear.
She looked at me.
"You finally found it."
I stepped toward her.
"Where is my daughter?"
Victoria smiled.
"Safe."
"Where?"
"Not here."
"Where is Daniel?"
"Safe too."
"Then let them go."
She shook her head.
"You still don't understand."
"What?"
"You think I'm your enemy."
I laughed.
"You attacked me."
"I pushed you."
"You tried to kill me."
"No."
Her expression changed.
"I tried to stop you from becoming a weapon."
I stared at her.
"A weapon?"
Victoria walked toward the glass chamber.
"Eleanor believed blood could control everything."
She placed one hand against the glass.
"She was wrong."
"Then why are you helping Richard?"
Victoria's face hardened.
"I'm not."
"Then who is?"
She looked at me.
"The woman who created all of this."
I froze.
"Eleanor?"
Victoria shook her head.
"No."
She looked toward the ceiling.
"Your mother."
I felt as though the floor disappeared.
"My mother?"
Victoria nodded.
"She knew about the trust."
"I know."
"She knew about the bloodline."
"I know."
"She knew about your pregnancy."
"I know."
Victoria stepped closer.
"But she also knew something your father never told you."
"What?"
"Your mother signed the original transfer order."
I shook my head.
"She said she was forced."
"She wasn't."
Victoria reached into her bag.
She pulled out a document.
I recognized my mother's signature.
Again.
TRANSFER AUTHORIZATION — EMILY HALE.
My hands trembled.
"This isn't me."
"No."
Victoria smiled.
"It's your mother."
"Why?"
"Because she believed the trust would destroy you."
I stared.
"So she gave me to them."
"Yes."
"And then my father rescued me."
"Yes."
"Then why did she lie?"
"Because she was ashamed."
Victoria's voice softened.
"She thought she could save you by sacrificing herself."
I shook my head.
"That doesn't make sense."
"It doesn't have to."
Victoria looked at me.
"People do terrible things when they believe they're saving someone they love."
A noise came from behind the wall.
Three knocks.
I froze.
Daniel.
I knew it.
I ran toward the sound.
Marcus grabbed my arm.
"Wait."
The wall moved.
A hidden door opened.
Daniel stumbled out.
His face was bruised.
His hands were tied.
I ran to him.
"Daniel!"
He caught me.
"I'm okay."
I hugged him.
For several seconds, nothing else mattered.
Then I noticed his eyes.
He was terrified.
"What happened?"
He looked at Victoria.
"She saved me."
I stepped back.
"What?"
Victoria said nothing.
Daniel continued.
"Richard's people took me."
"Where?"
"The lower level."
"Why?"
"Because they thought I had the trust key."
I looked at Victoria.
"You rescued him."
She nodded.
"Why?"
"Because Richard isn't the person you should fear."
"Then who?"
Victoria looked at the glass chamber.
"The man who has your daughter."
My heart stopped.
"Who?"
Victoria whispered:
"Your father."
I stared at her.
"No."
Daniel looked confused.
"What?"
"She thinks Edward took the baby."
I shook my head.
"My father would never."
Victoria's expression softened.
"Your father isn't the same man you remember."
"He saved me."
"Yes."
"He protected me."
"Yes."
"Then why would he take my daughter?"
"Because he believes the baby is the only way to destroy the trust."
I couldn't breathe.
"What does that mean?"
Victoria pointed toward the glass chamber.
"Your daughter is not just an heir."
"What is she?"
"The key."
"To what?"
"The original trust."
I looked at Daniel.
He didn't understand either.
Victoria continued.
"Your father has spent twenty-seven years trying to destroy Richard."
"And my daughter?"
"She gives him access."
I shook my head.
"Why didn't he tell me?"
"Because you would never agree."
A monitor suddenly turned on.
A live video appeared.
My father.
He was sitting in a dark room.
And in his arms...
was my daughter.
My heart stopped.
She was alive.
Sleeping.
Wrapped in the yellow blanket.
I pressed my hand against the screen.
"Baby..."
Daniel moved beside me.
"Where are you?"
My father looked directly into the camera.
"Emily."
His voice was calm.
"Don't come looking for her."
I screamed:
"Give me my daughter!"
He shook his head.
"You don't understand."
"Then explain!"
"Your daughter is the only person who can open the trust."
"Then destroy it without her!"
"I can't."
"Why?"
He looked down at the baby.
"Because the trust contains evidence."
"What evidence?"
He looked back at the camera.
"The evidence of what happened to Eleanor."
I froze.
"The murder."
He nodded.
"Your grandmother was not killed for money."
"Then why?"
"Because she discovered the truth."
"What truth?"
My father stared at me.
"That Richard wasn't the mastermind."
Silence.
I looked at Victoria.
She had gone pale.
Daniel whispered:
"Who was?"
My father answered.
"The person standing closest to Emily when she was born."
My mother.
I couldn't breathe.
Then the screen went black.
Victoria immediately walked toward the door.
"Where are you going?"
"To find your mother."
"Why?"
"Because she knows where your father is."
"And my daughter?"
"Your mother knows that too."
Daniel grabbed my hand.
"We're coming."
Victoria looked at him.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because if your father has the baby..."
She paused.
"...then the person who ordered him to take her is already moving."
I stared.
"Who?"
Victoria's eyes filled with fear.
"The person behind the entire trust."
"Richard?"
"No."
"Eleanor?"
"No."
"Then who?"
Victoria whispered:
"Your mother."
We reached my mother's house at 3:16 a.m.
The front door was open.
The lights were on.
But nobody was inside.
On the kitchen table sat a single envelope.
My name was written across it.
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph of my mother holding me as a newborn.
On the back:
I AM SORRY.
Then another line.
I NEVER GAVE THEM YOUR BABY.
I looked at Daniel.
"What?"
He took the photograph.
At the bottom was another sentence.
THE WOMAN WHO TOOK HER WAS WEARING MY FACE.
My blood ran cold.
Victoria whispered:
"Impossible."
Then the phone rang.
I answered.
A woman's voice spoke.
My mother's voice.
"Emily."
I froze.
"Mom?"
"Don't trust Victoria."
"Where are you?"
"Don't ask."
"Where is my daughter?"
Silence.
Then:
"She is with the only person who can keep her alive."
"Who?"
Another pause.
Then my mother whispered:
"Your sister."
I stopped breathing.
"I don't have a sister."
The line went dead.
Daniel stared at me.
Victoria looked terrified.
Marcus slowly lowered his phone.
"Actually..."
I looked at him.
"What?"
He opened a file.
"There is one."
My heart stopped.
"Who?"
He turned the screen toward me.
A birth record.
Same mother.
Same father.
Born three years before me.
Status:
DECEASED.
Except the death certificate had been falsified.
And beneath the erased name was one word.
ISABELLA.
Victoria stepped backward.
"Isabella?"
Marcus nodded.
"Isabella Rossi."
I stared.
The woman who had been receiving the money.
The woman who had disappeared.
The woman everyone believed was Victoria's daughter.
But she wasn't.
She was my sister.
And somewhere in the city, she was holding my baby.
The phone rang again.
This time, I didn't answer immediately.
Because I already knew the voice on the other end.
And I knew the next secret would be worse than everything we had uncovered so far.
Finally, I pressed accept.
A woman's voice whispered:
"Hello, little sister."
Then I heard my daughter crying in the background.
And Isabella said:
"If you want her back..."
She paused.
"...you'll have to learn why our mother wanted one daughter dead and the other one alive."
The call ended.
I stood motionless.
Daniel took my hand.
Victoria stared at the floor.
And Marcus whispered the words none of us wanted to hear.
"Emily..."
I looked at him.
"The woman in the emerald dress isn't the mastermind."
He swallowed.
"She never was."
"The real betrayal..."
He looked toward the dark window.
May you like
"...came from inside your own family."
And somewhere in the city, my daughter cried again.
