Chapter 11 — The Child’s Secret

Chapter 11 — The Child’s Secret
The sound of my daughter's cry stayed inside my head long after the phone went dead.
I could still hear it.
That tiny, frightened sound.
A sound I had heard only a handful of times since she was born, yet one I could recognize through a thousand voices.
"She's alive."
My knees nearly gave out.
Daniel caught me.
"Emily."
"She's alive."
"Yes."
"Then we find her."
"We will."
I looked at Marcus.
"You said there was a sister."
He nodded.
"Isabella Rossi."
My mother's supposedly dead daughter.
My sister.
The woman who had been hiding behind another family's name.
The woman who had my baby.
I stared at the birth record.
"Why would my mother tell everyone Isabella was dead?"
Marcus shook his head.
"That's what we're going to find out."
Victoria stood near the window.
She hadn't spoken since the call.
I turned toward her.
"You knew."
She looked at me.
"I suspected."
"That's not an answer."
"I knew Isabella existed."
"You knew she was my sister?"
"No."
"Then what did you know?"
Victoria lowered her eyes.
"That she was dangerous."
I laughed bitterly.
"Everyone is dangerous."
"Isabella is different."
"How?"
Victoria looked at me.
"She was raised to believe that you stole her life."
I felt a chill.
"I didn't even know she existed."
"I know."
"Then why does she hate me?"
"Because she was told you were the reason she was abandoned."
My stomach tightened.
"Who told her?"
Victoria didn't answer.
My phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
ONE HOUR.
Then:
COME TO THE OLD CONSERVATORY.
A location followed.
Beneath it were six words.
COME ALONE OR SHE DOESN'T EAT.
Daniel saw the screen.
"I'm coming."
I shook my head.
"No."
"Emily."
"If Isabella wants me alone, I go alone."
"That's exactly what she wants."
"She has my daughter."
He couldn't argue.
I looked at Victoria.
"Where is the conservatory?"
She immediately knew.
"An old Rossi property."
Marcus frowned.
"Why would she choose that?"
Victoria's expression changed.
"Because that's where Isabella was born."
We drove through the city before sunrise.
The conservatory stood behind an abandoned estate surrounded by iron gates.
The glass roof was cracked.
Dead vines covered the walls.
It looked beautiful once.
Now it looked like a mausoleum.
I entered alone.
Daniel watched from a distance.
Marcus had positioned officers around the perimeter.
No one was supposed to interfere unless I gave the signal.
Inside, the air smelled of damp earth.
Then I heard a baby cry.
My heart broke.
"Where are you?"
A voice answered.
"Keep walking."
I followed it.
Past rows of dead plants.
Past broken statues.
Until I reached the center of the building.
Isabella stood there.
She wore a black coat.
Her hair was tied back.
And in her arms was my daughter.
I stopped breathing.
My baby was wrapped in the yellow blanket.
Her eyes were open.
She looked at me.
I nearly collapsed.
"Give her to me."
Isabella shook her head.
"Not yet."
"She's hungry."
"I know."
"Then feed her."
"I will."
She held the baby closer.
"After you answer my question."
"What?"
"Why did your mother choose you?"
I stared.
"I don't know."
"That's a lie."
"It isn't."
Isabella laughed.
"You always get everything."
"I didn't ask for any of this."
"Neither did I."
She looked down at my daughter.
"I was born first."
I froze.
"What?"
"Three years before you."
"I know."
"You know now."
She looked at me.
"But I knew when I was seven."
"What happened?"
"My mother told me you replaced me."
I felt sick.
"Why?"
"Because Eleanor wanted a child with the strongest genetic markers."
"And she chose me."
"Yes."
"But you were first."
"I was imperfect."
I stared.
"What does that mean?"
Isabella's face hardened.
"I carried the genetic disorder."
I understood.
"That's why they said you died."
She nodded.
"They didn't kill me."
"Then what happened?"
"They abandoned me."
"Where?"
"An institution."
I felt tears fill my eyes.
"Isabella..."
"Don't pity me."
"I'm not."
"Good."
She looked at my daughter.
"Because your daughter is about to learn what I learned."
I stepped forward.
"She's innocent."
"So was I."
Isabella walked toward an old table.
She placed my daughter in a bassinet.
My heart jumped.
"Don't touch her."
"I won't."
She turned.
"Do you know why your daughter survived?"
"Because she was born strong."
"No."
"Because she's healthy."
"No."
"Then why?"
Isabella opened a small metal case.
Inside was a vial.
"What is that?"
"Your daughter's blood."
My heart stopped.
"When did you take it?"
"At the hospital."
"Why?"
"Because I wanted to know."
"Know what?"
"Whether the stories were true."
She placed a report on the table.
I picked it up.
The results were unlike anything I'd seen.
There were genetic sequences.
Hundreds of them.
Some were highlighted.
One was labeled:
E-0
I looked at Isabella.
"What is E-0?"
"The original sequence."
"Original what?"
"Genetic baseline."
She pointed to the report.
"Every generation of the family has carried fragments of it."
"And my daughter?"
Isabella looked at me.
"She carries the complete sequence."
I couldn't speak.
"That's impossible."
"It shouldn't exist."
"Then why does it?"
"Because you carry it too."
I stared.
"What?"
Isabella nodded.
"You aren't simply Eleanor's descendant."
She pointed to my name.
"You inherited the complete dormant sequence."
"Then why didn't anyone know?"
"Because it only activates when combined with a specific paternal marker."
I swallowed.
"Daniel."
"No."
She shook her head.
"Not Daniel."
My blood went cold.
"Then who?"
Isabella looked toward the entrance.
"Your daughter's father."
"Daniel is her father."
"Biologically."
She paused.
"Yes."
"Then what are you saying?"
"Her DNA doesn't match his entire paternal profile."
I stared at the report.
"How?"
Isabella's eyes narrowed.
"Because someone altered Daniel's."
A gunshot sounded outside.
Isabella immediately grabbed my daughter.
I screamed.
"What happened?"
She looked toward the entrance.
"They found us."
"Who?"
"Richard."
Marcus shouted from outside.
"Emily! Get down!"
Another shot shattered the glass roof.
Isabella dropped behind the table.
I threw myself over the bassinet.
Daniel rushed inside.
"Emily!"
"I'm here!"
He ran toward me.
Isabella raised a gun.
"Stop!"
Daniel froze.
"Isabella."
"You don't come closer."
"That's my daughter."
"No."
She looked at him.
"She's your biological daughter."
"Then give her to me."
"I will."
She lowered the gun.
"But first you need to know what your father did."
Daniel's face changed.
"What?"
"He altered your DNA."
Silence.
"What are you talking about?"
"Your father had you genetically modified."
Daniel stared at her.
"That's impossible."
"No."
She held up the report.
"Your original genetic profile was altered when you were a child."
"For what?"
"To make you compatible."
"Compatible with what?"
"The trust."
Daniel went pale.
"The trust?"
Isabella nodded.
"Your grandfather wanted a male heir who could activate the genetic sequence."
"And me?"
"You were the experiment."
Daniel looked horrified.
"What about my brother?"
Isabella's expression changed.
"He was the failure."
I felt cold.
"What happened to him?"
"He wasn't actually your brother."
Daniel stared.
"What?"
"He was a donor."
"For what?"
"Your genetic treatment."
Daniel couldn't speak.
Isabella continued.
"Your father used his blood to alter yours."
I looked at Daniel.
His entire face had gone white.
"Then my DNA..."
"Isn't entirely yours."
Suddenly the doors burst open.
Richard's men entered.
Marcus shouted.
"Police! Drop your weapons!"
Chaos erupted.
Isabella grabbed my daughter.
Daniel pulled me behind a stone column.
Shots rang out.
Glass shattered.
People screamed.
Then a figure appeared above us.
Richard.
He stood on the second-floor balcony.
He looked down at Daniel.
"You were never supposed to know."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Where is my father?"
Richard smiled.
"You're looking at him."
Daniel froze.
"What?"
Richard removed his coat.
He looked older.
Tired.
But unmistakably familiar.
"I told you I was dead."
Daniel stared.
"No."
Richard nodded.
"Your father died twenty years ago."
He pointed to himself.
"I'm not Richard."
Silence.
Daniel whispered:
"Who are you?"
The man smiled.
"Alexander."
Isabella dropped the gun.
"No."
He looked at her.
"Hello, daughter."
My blood went cold.
Alexander.
The name my father had once mentioned.
The man everyone believed had been murdered.
Isabella's father.
Daniel's father's double.
And apparently...
the person behind everything.
I looked at Isabella.
"He's your father."
She nodded slowly.
"But you said Richard—"
"Richard is dead."
Alexander smiled.
"He has been dead for years."
Daniel looked at him.
"Then who raised me?"
Alexander laughed.
"Richard."
"Where is he?"
"Dead."
"Then why did you pretend to be him?"
"Because nobody questions a dead man's identity."
I felt dizzy.
"What do you want?"
Alexander looked at my daughter.
"Her."
"Why?"
"Because she completed what I started."
"What did you start?"
"The bloodline."
He looked at Daniel.
"I created the perfect carrier."
Daniel shook his head.
"You altered me."
"Yes."
"You used my brother."
"Yes."
"You arranged my marriage."
"Yes."
Daniel looked broken.
"You destroyed my life."
Alexander smiled.
"No."
He looked at me.
"I gave you both a purpose."
I stepped forward.
"My daughter isn't your purpose."
Alexander's smile disappeared.
"She's the final key."
He held up a small device.
The lights in the conservatory flickered.
The genetic equipment inside the building activated.
A low hum filled the room.
My daughter began crying.
I ran toward her.
Isabella blocked me.
"Wait."
"Move!"
"Look at the monitor."
I turned.
A screen showed a genetic sequence.
Then another.
Then a final one.
E-0 ACTIVATION: 100%.
My blood froze.
Alexander spoke softly.
"For twenty-seven years, your family has been trying to activate the original sequence."
He looked at me.
"You did it."
"I did nothing."
"You carried the carrier."
"And she?"
"She is the completion."
I looked at my daughter.
"Completion of what?"
Alexander smiled.
"The original inheritance protocol."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Then what happens when it activates?"
Alexander looked at him.
"Every hidden account."
"Every property."
"Every trust."
"Every secret."
"Everything belonging to the original family."
He paused.
"Transfers."
My heart stopped.
"To my daughter?"
"Yes."
"Then why take her?"
"Because the transfer requires her blood."
Isabella looked at him.
"You said you would release her."
Alexander's expression changed.
"I lied."
Isabella raised her gun.
"Father."
He looked at her.
"You were always sentimental."
She pointed the weapon at him.
"Give her to Emily."
"No."
"Now."
Alexander laughed.
"You were never part of the plan."
Isabella's hands trembled.
"Neither was I."
"No."
He smiled.
"You were the warning."
Isabella suddenly turned.
She handed my daughter to me.
"Run."
I grabbed her.
"Isabella—"
"Go!"
Daniel pulled me toward the exit.
Marcus and the officers covered us.
Alexander shouted.
"Stop them!"
Isabella fired.
The lights exploded.
Darkness swallowed the room.
We ran.
My daughter screamed against my chest.
Daniel held my hand.
Marcus shouted directions.
Behind us came gunshots.
Then one final sound.
A scream.
Isabella.
I stopped.
Daniel grabbed me.
"No."
"She's there."
"We have to go."
"But she saved my daughter."
"We'll come back."
We reached the outside.
Police surrounded the building.
The fire department arrived.
Smoke poured from the roof.
Then the entire conservatory shook.
An explosion.
The glass roof collapsed.
I screamed Isabella's name.
No answer.
Hours later, the fire was finally contained.
Alexander was gone.
No body was found.
Neither was Isabella's.
But my daughter was safe.
Alive.
Sleeping in my arms.
I kissed her forehead.
Daniel sat beside me.
He looked at her.
"She's everything."
I nodded.
Then he looked at me.
"I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"For not knowing what my father did to me."
I squeezed his hand.
"You didn't choose it."
"But I chose you."
I looked at him.
"Did you?"
"Yes."
"And if the trust didn't exist?"
"I'd still choose you."
I believed him.
For the first time in days, I believed him.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message.
No number.
One photograph.
Isabella.
Alive.
Standing beside a hospital bed.
On the bed was my father.
His eyes were open.
Below the photograph:
YOUR FATHER IS ALIVE.
Then another message.
ALEXANDER HAS THE TRUST.
Then a final one.
BUT HE DOESN'T HAVE THE CHILD.
I looked at my daughter.
She was sleeping peacefully.
For the first time, I understood the real secret.
The child wasn't merely the heir.
She was the only person who could expose the entire conspiracy.
And now everyone who had lied to me wanted her.
But there was one thing they had forgotten.
I was her mother.
And I was done running.
I looked at Daniel.
"We're going after them."
He nodded.
"Together."
I kissed my daughter's forehead.
Then I looked toward the burning remains of the conservatory.
Somewhere in the darkness, Alexander was still alive.
My father was being held captive.
Isabella had disappeared.
And the trust had been activated.
But before we could find any of them, a message arrived from my mother.
Only four words.
DON'T TRUST YOUR BABY'S BLOOD.
I stared at the screen.
Then at my sleeping daughter.
And for the first time...
May you like
I wondered whether the greatest secret wasn't what she had inherited.
It was what she had been born carrying.
