Chapter 2: A Photograph No One Could Explain
That evening, the woman—Victoria Hale—couldn't sleep.
She opened an old wooden box hidden in the back of her closet.
Inside lay a faded family photograph.
Two little girls stood beside a swing set.
Victoria, age nine.
Her baby sister, Lily.
Victoria's fingers trembled.
The scar.
Lily had fallen from a bicycle when she was three.
Exactly above her left eyebrow.
The same place.
The next morning, Victoria returned to the restaurant.
Emily was serving breakfast.
"Can we talk?" Victoria asked.
Emily hesitated.
"If this is about yesterday—"
"It's not."
Victoria slid the photograph across the table.
Emily stared.
Her face slowly lost all color.
"I..."
She reached into her apron pocket.
From an old leather wallet, she removed a tiny silver locket.
Inside was half of the very same childhood photograph.

Neither woman spoke.
Neither knew how to explain it.
