Chapter 4: Home Again

Chapter 4: Home Again
Weeks later, the sisters returned to the empty family home.
The swing set was gone.
The garden had grown wild.
But one old oak tree still stood in the backyard.
Victoria smiled through tears.
"You used to hide behind that tree whenever you stole cookies."
Emily laughed.
"I still would."
For the first time since childhood, they embraced without fear that someone would take the other away.
As they walked toward the gate, Victoria suddenly stopped.
"I'm sorry I slapped you."
Emily smiled gently.
"If you hadn't..."
"You might never have looked closely enough to recognize me."
They left the old house together.
Not as strangers.
May you like
Not as victims of the past.
But as sisters who had finally found their way home.
