Chapter 2: The Truth in the Records

Chapter 2: The Truth in the Records
Silence pressed against the Bennett dining room like a weight.
Margaret’s confident expression faltered for the first time.
“You’re lying,” she said sharply. “Sophia doesn’t have anything.”
Ethan didn’t look at his mother.
Instead, he walked slowly toward the dining table and placed a black folder on top of the broken glass.
“I checked the financial records myself.”
His voice was steady—but tight.
Margaret frowned.
“What records?”
Ethan opened the folder.
Inside were transaction histories, legal transfers, and corporate filings spanning five years.
“I thought I understood our situation,” he continued. “I thought we were barely surviving because of bad investments.”
He paused.
“But we weren’t surviving.”
“We were being saved.”
Sophia stood silently, still holding her burning cheek.
Ethan turned a page.
“Every major debt payment… every emergency loan… every foreclosure reversal…”
His eyes lifted toward Sophia.
“It came from an account under your name.”
Margaret stepped forward.
“That’s impossible!”
Ethan pointed at the document.
“This account was created from the sale of a tech company.”
“A company Sophia’s grandfather left her before he died.”
The room shifted.
The truth began to settle in like cold air.
