Chapter 3: Why She Stayed Silent

Margaret turned sharply toward Sophia.

“You let us think you had nothing?”

Sophia finally spoke.

Her voice was quiet.

“I didn’t want to be treated differently.”

Ethan frowned.

“Differently from what?”

Sophia looked down at her hands.

“From someone you could respect.”

The words hit harder than any accusation.

Silence filled the room again.

Then Sophia continued.

“When I met you, Ethan… your family was drowning.”

“I saw the letters from the bank. I saw the notices you tried to hide.”

“I couldn’t watch you lose everything.”

“So I helped.”

Margaret shook her head.

“And you never told us?”

Sophia gave a faint, tired smile.

“Because I wanted to know if you loved me… or what I could give you.”

Ethan’s voice broke slightly.

“You thought we wouldn’t accept you?”

Sophia didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.
