No one spoke.

Not even Margaret.

For the first time, she looked smaller.

Not physically.

But in presence.

Like the room had finally stopped agreeing with her importance.

Emily stood slowly.

Her voice trembled.

“Mom
 why didn’t you tell me?”

Linda’s expression softened.

“Because I didn’t want to be your safety net.”

A pause.

“I wanted to see if you could choose your life without one.”

Emily swallowed hard.

Margaret laughed weakly.

“This is absurd. You’re going to destroy this family over a performance?”

Linda stood again.

And this time, the air changed with her.

“This family,” she said gently, “destroyed itself the moment it decided respect only belonged to people it recognized.”

She gathered her bag.

Daniel looked like he wanted to speak.

But couldn’t find a version of himself that would survive it.

Margaret finally whispered:

“What do you want from us?”

Linda paused at the edge of the table.

Then answered simply:

“Nothing.”

A beat.

Then—

“But Emily gets to choose whether she stays in a family that confuses cruelty with status.”

She turned toward her daughter.

Emily hesitated only a moment.

Then walked to her.

Margaret watched her son’s bride leave her side without a fight.
