Chapter 13 — The Night the Resort Went Dark

Chapter 13 — The Night the Resort Went Dark
The resort had never been completely dark.
Even during storms, backup generators kept the eastern wing illuminated.
Emergency systems remained active.
Security cameras continued recording.
The founder's network was designed to survive almost anything.
That was why I knew something was wrong when every light disappeared at once.
One second, the lobby was glowing beneath the chandeliers.
The next—
blackness.
Total.
Absolute.
Then the emergency alarms began.
One after another.
Not outside.
Inside the walls.
Nora's voice came through my earpiece.
“Amelia, we're losing systems.”
“Which ones?”
“All of them.”
“Security?”
“Gone.”
“Cameras?”
“Gone.”
“Access control?”
“Gone.”
“The founder system?”
Silence.
Then:
“I can't find it.”
My heart stopped.
“Where is Richard?”
Nora didn't answer.
“Where is Richard?”
“He's not in the building.”
I knew immediately.
The final move had begun.
I ran toward the control room.
Emergency lights flickered along the corridor.
Guests were being escorted from their rooms.
Security officers shouted instructions.
The elevators had stopped.
Phones were ringing everywhere.
The resort had become a maze of darkness.
I reached the control room.
The door was open.
Every monitor was black.
The central server was still running.
But someone had disconnected the founder authentication system.
I stared at the empty port.
“No.”
Nora entered behind me.
“Can we restore it?”
“How long?”
“Maybe six hours.”
“We don't have six hours.”
She looked at me.
“What happened?”
I pointed at the server.
“Someone physically removed the founder authorization module.”
Her face went pale.
“Who?”
I already knew.
“Richard.”
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Richard.”
His voice came through.
“Amelia.”
“You shut down the resort.”
“I had to.”
“You stole the founder module.”
“Yes.”
“You betrayed me.”
Silence.
Then:
“I saved you.”
I laughed bitterly.
“From what?”
“From yourself.”
“You've used that excuse before.”
“This time I'm serious.”
“Where are you?”
“You won't find me.”
“Give me back the module.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because Victoria has the other half.”
My stomach dropped.
“What?”
“She always had it.”
“Then this was planned.”
“Yes.”
“By you and Victoria.”
“No.”
“Don't lie to me.”
“I didn't know how far she would go.”
I closed my eyes.
“Why did you help her?”
Richard's voice broke.
“Because she has my daughter.”
I froze.
“What?”
“My daughter.”
“Who?”
“Rebecca.”
I stared.
“That doesn't make sense.”
“It does.”
“Rebecca is your cousin.”
“No.”
I couldn't breathe.
“She is my daughter.”
I stepped backward.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“Daniel is her father.”
“No.”
“Then why did he raise her?”
“Because I asked him to.”
“Why?”
“Because I was trying to protect her.”
I remembered Rebecca.
Her fear.
Her tears.
Her betrayal.
Her sudden decision to testify.
Everything became more complicated.
“Victoria knows?”
“Yes.”
“She threatened Rebecca.”
“Yes.”
“And you shut down the resort to protect her.”
“Yes.”
“You could have told me.”
“You would have tried to stop me.”
“Of course I would.”
“Exactly.”
I gripped the phone.
“Where is Rebecca now?”
Richard was silent.
“Richard.”
“She went with Victoria.”
My blood ran cold.
“When?”
“Twenty minutes ago.”
I turned toward Nora.
“Lock every road.”
Nora nodded.
“Already trying.”
“Find Rebecca.”
“We're on it.”
Richard spoke again.
“Amelia.”
“What?”
“You need to understand.”
“I understand enough.”
“No.”
His voice became urgent.
“If Victoria gets the founder module, she gets more than the resort.”
“I know.”
“No.”
He paused.
“She gets the succession trust.”
I froze.
“The $612 million.”
“And everything attached to it.”
“How?”
“The founder module contains the final authentication key.”
I looked at the dead screens.
“So that's why you took it.”
“Yes.”
“To stop her.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did the resort go dark?”
“Because the system can't be separated from the module.”
I understood.
He hadn't simply shut down the resort.
He had shut down the entire founder network.
Without the module—
the resort couldn't recognize me.
The board couldn't verify my authority.
The trust couldn't verify my identity.
And every legal system connected to the founder would freeze.
Richard had made me powerless.
In one night.
At 11:43 p.m., the board convened an emergency meeting.
They didn't ask me to attend.
They came to the resort.
Sixteen directors.
Four attorneys.
Three outside trustees.
And Victoria.
She walked into the dark lobby carrying a briefcase.
The emergency lights illuminated her face.
She looked calm.
Almost pleased.
I stood at the top of the staircase.
“You're not welcome here.”
She smiled.
“I own part of this company.”
“No.”
“Check the records.”
“They're offline.”
“Exactly.”
She opened her briefcase.
Inside was a set of documents.
“Tonight, you are not the Founder.”
I stared.
“What did you do?”
“Nothing.”
She smiled.
“Richard did it for me.”
My jaw tightened.
“You manipulated him.”
“I gave him a choice.”
“His daughter or your empire.”
“You're lying.”
“No.”
She looked at the board.
“Ask him.”
One of the directors stepped forward.
“Ms. Vale, until the founder system is restored, the board has voted to suspend your operational authority.”
I stared at him.
“You're suspending me?”
“Temporarily.”
“On whose authority?”
“The emergency governance clause.”
I laughed.
“The same clause Victoria wrote.”
Nobody answered.
Victoria smiled.
“Technically, the board is acting within its authority.”
I looked around the room.
These people had spent years calling me Founder.
Now they couldn't even look me in the eye.
Then the main doors opened.
Richard walked in.
He looked exhausted.
His suit was wrinkled.
His face was pale.
He carried the founder module.
Everyone turned.
Victoria's expression changed.
“Richard.”
He ignored her.
He walked toward me.
I stared at him.
“You came back.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To fix what I broke.”
He placed the module on the floor.
Victoria stepped forward.
“Give it to me.”
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
Her expression hardened.
“You promised.”
“I changed my mind.”
“You don't have a choice.”
Richard looked at me.
“I do.”
Victoria's voice became cold.
“Then Rebecca dies.”
The room went silent.
Richard froze.
I looked at him.
“Where is she?”
Victoria smiled.
“You don't need to know.”
Richard's face collapsed.
“Please.”
“No.”
I stepped forward.
“Victoria.”
She looked at me.
“You're threatening a child.”
“Rebecca is an adult.”
“She is still your daughter.”
Victoria shrugged.
“She chose her side.”
Richard closed his eyes.
Then he did something unexpected.
He smiled.
Victoria frowned.
“What?”
Richard reached into his jacket.
He pulled out his phone.
“I recorded everything.”
Victoria froze.
“What?”
“Every conversation.”
He turned the screen toward the board.
The first recording played.
Victoria's voice.
“If Richard doesn't cooperate, Rebecca disappears.”
Silence.
Another recording.
“The founder system must be disabled before midnight.”
Another.
“Once Amelia loses control, the board will remove her.”
The room erupted.
Directors shouted.
Attorneys stood.
Victoria stepped backward.
“You recorded me.”
Richard nodded.
“For months.”
I stared at him.
“Why?”
He looked at me.
“Because I knew one day you'd need proof.”
Victoria turned toward the doors.
Security blocked her.
She looked at me.
“You think you've won?”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“I think you made your mistake.”
“What mistake?”
“You forgot the Founder isn't the system.”
Victoria frowned.
I pointed toward my chest.
“It's me.”
She laughed.
“Without the module, you can't prove it.”
“Maybe.”
I looked at Nora.
“Can we restore the system manually?”
She shook her head.
“Not without the module.”
I smiled.
“Then we don't restore it.”
Everyone stared.
“What are you doing?”
I walked toward the main reception desk.
I opened the founder registry.
The old paper book was still there.
My father's handwriting.
My mother's signature.
And mine.
I placed my hand on the page.
“Record this.”
Nora understood.
She started filming.
I looked directly into the camera.
“I, Amelia Elena Vale, Founder of Vale Hospitality Holdings, formally declare that all emergency board actions taken during the system outage are suspended pending verification.”
One director protested.
“You don't have authority.”
I looked at him.
“I am the authority.”
He froze.
Then I continued.
“All transfers, ownership changes, board appointments, trust actions, and financial transactions executed during this outage are hereby contested.”
Victoria shouted:
“You can't do that!”
I turned toward her.
“Watch me.”
At 12:06 a.m., the resort remained dark.
But the legal system had changed.
My declaration had been recorded.
Witnessed.
Timestamped.
And distributed to every attorney and trustee.
Victoria's plan depended on one thing—
that I would have no evidence of authority during the blackout.
Now she had evidence.
My voice.
My declaration.
My identity.
And the witnesses.
But there was still one problem.
The founder module.
Without it, the automated systems remained frozen.
And Victoria still wanted it.
I looked at Richard.
“Give it to me.”
He hesitated.
Then handed it over.
The moment my fingers touched it—
every light in the resort came back on.
The chandeliers illuminated the lobby.
The elevators restarted.
The cameras activated.
The security systems returned.
Every screen turned on.
Then the central display appeared.
FOUNDER VERIFIED.
AMELIA ELENA VALE.
CONTROL RESTORED.
The board stared.
Victoria looked furious.
Richard exhaled.
I looked at him.
“You could have trusted me.”
“I know.”
“You nearly destroyed everything.”
“I know.”
“You put the entire estate at risk.”
“I know.”
“Why should I forgive you?”
He looked at me.
“You shouldn't.”
For the first time, he wasn't asking.
He was accepting the consequences.
Then the system displayed another message.
Everyone turned.
UNAUTHORIZED TRUST ACCESS DETECTED.
Nora rushed toward the console.
“What is that?”
The screen displayed an account.
A massive account.
The amount:
$4,300,000,000.
I stared.
“What is this?”
Richard looked at it.
“I don't know.”
Victoria's face went white.
I turned toward her.
“You do.”
She didn't answer.
“What is this account?”
Silence.
Then Elena entered the lobby.
She looked at the screen.
Her expression changed.
“That's not an account.”
I frowned.
“What is it?”
She whispered:
“It's a reserve.”
“For what?”
She looked at me.
“Your mother's original estate.”
I froze.
“Four point three billion dollars.”
“Yes.”
“Where is it?”
Elena looked toward the floor.
“Under the resort.”
I stared.
“There's another vault.”
“Yes.”
“Who controls it?”
She looked at Victoria.
“No one.”
“Why?”
“Because it was never activated.”
“How do I activate it?”
Elena took a breath.
“You can't.”
I frowned.
“Why?”
“Because the person who created it is still alive.”
I turned toward her.
“Who?”
She looked at me.
“You.”
I froze.
“What?”
“You inherited it at birth.”
The lobby went silent.
Victoria whispered:
“No.”
Elena nodded.
“Yes.”
I looked at the screen.
RESERVE OWNER: AMELIA ELENA VALE
Then:
ACTIVATION REQUIREMENT: FOUNDER'S CHOICE
I understood.
My father had hidden one final fortune.
Victoria had never known.
Richard had never known.
The family had never known.
Not even Elena had told me.
I turned toward Victoria.
“You spent twenty years trying to steal what you thought was mine.”
She stared at me.
“And you never realized…”
I stepped forward.
“…you were fighting over the wrong fortune.”
Victoria's face went pale.
I smiled.
“Tonight, you didn't take my resort.”
I looked around the illuminated lobby.
“You helped me find the rest of my inheritance.”
Victoria said nothing.
Security moved toward her.
For the first time, she looked afraid.
But before they reached her, her phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression changed.
“What?”
A pause.
“No.”
Another pause.
Her hand began shaking.
She slowly lowered the phone.
I stared.
“Who was that?”
Victoria looked at me.
Her voice was barely audible.
“Your father.”
My heart stopped.
“That's impossible.”
She shook her head.
“He's alive.”
Silence.
Then every screen in the resort went black.
One message appeared:
THE FOUNDER'S STORY IS NOT OVER.
And beneath it—
May you like
a date.
TOMORROW. 9:00 A.M.
