Chapter 7 — The Night Richard Betrayed Me

Chapter 7 — The Night Richard Betrayed Me
The elevator doors closed behind Marcus.
Nobody moved.
I stared at the document he had left in my hands.
JOINT OWNERSHIP — EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.
My name.
His name.
A legal structure designed to look legitimate.
A trap disguised as a solution.
I looked at Richard.
He was staring at the closed elevator doors.
“You knew he was coming.”
Richard didn't answer.
“Richard.”
He slowly turned toward me.
His face looked older than it had an hour ago.
“I knew he would come eventually.”
“Eventually?”
“Yes.”
“You knew Marcus was alive.”
“Yes.”
“You knew he was my half-brother.”
“Yes.”
“You knew he was forging my signature.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
I felt something inside me break.
Not because he had lied.
I had expected lies.
It was because I finally understood that Richard had been standing beside me for years while knowing exactly what was happening.
“How long?”
He didn't answer.
“How long have you known?”
“Six years.”
I laughed once.
It wasn't a happy sound.
“Six years.”
“Yes.”
“You watched him build this.”
“Yes.”
“You watched him replace employees.”
“Yes.”
“You watched him move millions.”
“Yes.”
“You watched Vanessa humiliate me.”
Richard looked down.
“Yes.”
I stepped closer.
“And you let me walk into this blind.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
I stared at him.
“Don't say that.”
“It's true.”
“No.”
My voice shook.
“You don't get to call betrayal protection.”
Richard swallowed.
“I know.”
“Then tell me the truth.”
He looked at me.
“The whole truth.”
Silence.
Finally, he nodded.
“Then you need to know what happened six years ago.”
Six years earlier, Richard had received a phone call.
The caller was Marcus.
Richard had never met him before.
At least, that was what Richard claimed.
Marcus knew everything.
He knew about the resort.
He knew about my father's private accounts.
He knew about the vault.
And most frighteningly—
he knew about me.
Marcus offered Richard a deal.
Control the resort from the inside.
Replace key employees.
Move certain accounts.
Prepare the legal documents.
And when the time came, transfer ownership.
In return, Richard would receive enough money to disappear forever.
“How much?” I asked.
Richard looked ashamed.
“Twenty million.”
I stared.
“You betrayed me for twenty million dollars?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
He shook his head.
“That was never the real offer.”
“What was?”
“Protection.”
I frowned.
“For whom?”
“For my family.”
“Your family?”
He nodded.
“Marcus knew about my wife.”
I said nothing.
“He knew she was sick.”
My expression changed.
Richard continued.
“She needed surgery.”
“How serious?”
“Life-threatening.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I was ashamed.”
“You could have asked me.”
“I couldn't.”
“Why?”
“Because Marcus had already paid the hospital.”
I froze.
“He paid for her treatment?”
“Yes.”
“And in exchange?”
“My loyalty.”
I looked at him.
“That still doesn't explain everything.”
Richard lowered his eyes.
“It wasn't just the surgery.”
“What else?”
“He had my son.”
I stared.
“Your son?”
“Ethan.”
I had never heard the name.
“He was seventeen.”
“What happened to him?”
“Marcus accused him of stealing from one of his companies.”
“Did he?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because Marcus wanted leverage.”
I felt sick.
“He threatened your son.”
Richard nodded.
“He said Ethan would go to prison unless I followed his instructions.”
I stared at him.
“And you believed him?”
“I saw the evidence.”
“What evidence?”
“Fabricated.”
“But convincing.”
“Enough to destroy my son.”
I sat down.
“So you chose me or your family.”
Richard's eyes filled with tears.
“I chose both.”
“No.”
I looked at him.
“You chose them.”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
I walked toward the window.
Outside, the resort was still illuminated.
Guests were being evacuated quietly.
Employees were being interviewed.
Security teams were searching every floor.
My resort.
My home.
My father's legacy.
And somewhere beneath it all was a man who had spent six years preparing to take it.
I turned.
“Where is Ethan?”
Richard hesitated.
“Alive.”
“Where?”
“Somewhere safe.”
“Safe from Marcus?”
“Yes.”
“Who is protecting him?”
Richard looked at me.
“You are.”
I froze.
“What?”
“The money I moved wasn't for Marcus.”
“Then where did it go?”
“To an account in Ethan's name.”
I stared.
“How much?”
“Seventy-three million.”
My heart stopped.
“The missing money.”
Richard nodded.
“I moved it.”
“You stole seventy-three million dollars.”
“Yes.”
“To protect your son.”
“Yes.”
“And the twenty-one million?”
“My wife's treatment.”
I closed my eyes.
The numbers suddenly made sense.
Not all of them.
But enough.
“Then why did you continue?”
Richard looked away.
“Because Marcus had more demands.”
“What demands?”
“He wanted the Meridian archive.”
“Why?”
“Because it contains records proving he owns nothing.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“Your father stole the land from him.”
“You said that before.”
“But you don't understand why.”
Richard stepped closer.
“Your father discovered that Marcus had been laundering money through Meridian Pacific.”
I stared.
“Billions.”
Richard nodded.
“Your father took control of the land and used the resort to hide the evidence.”
“So the resort was a vault.”
“Partly.”
“And Marcus wanted the evidence.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't he simply destroy it?”
“Because he doesn't know where it is.”
I remembered the vault.
“The archive.”
Richard nodded.
“Your father split it into three parts.”
“Where?”
“One beneath the resort.”
“One?”
“Another in a private trust.”
“And the third?”
Richard looked at me.
“With you.”
I felt cold.
“What do you mean?”
“You inherited it.”
I shook my head.
“I inherited nothing but the resort.”
Richard whispered:
“That's what your father wanted you to believe.”
I demanded every document Richard had.
Every account.
Every message.
Every communication with Marcus.
He gave me everything.
Or so I thought.
We spent four hours going through the files.
Then I found something.
A photograph.
Richard standing with my father.
Six years ago.
Behind them was the old resort construction site.
And standing beside my father—
was Marcus.
I turned the photograph over.
A date.
June 12, 2020.
And a handwritten sentence.
THE NIGHT RICHARD CHOSE.
I looked at him.
“What happened that night?”
Richard went pale.
“That was when Marcus gave me the choice.”
“What choice?”
“Your life.”
I stared.
“What?”
“He told me that if I didn't cooperate, you'd die.”
My blood ran cold.
“Why me?”
“Because your father had transferred something to you.”
“What?”
“I didn't know.”
“Neither did Marcus.”
“Then how did he know?”
“Because someone inside your family told him.”
I felt the familiar chill.
“Who?”
Richard shook his head.
“I never found out.”
“Who had access?”
“Your mother.”
I froze.
“My mother was dead.”
“I know.”
“Then who?”
Richard looked at me.
“Evelyn.”
I felt the room go silent.
“Evelyn told Marcus about me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
“You worked with her.”
“No.”
“You just said she was involved.”
“She was.”
“How?”
“She was the person who created the first ownership documents.”
I stared.
“Evelyn forged my signature?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“She taught Marcus how to reproduce it.”
I felt sick.
“My own family taught him.”
Richard nodded.
“That's why the signatures are so accurate.”
I looked down at my hands.
All those years.
All those documents.
Someone had been studying me.
Preparing for this moment.
At 3:41 a.m., Richard finally showed me the last file.
It was hidden inside an encrypted drive.
The title:
OPERATION FOUNDER.
I opened it.
The first page contained a photograph of me.
Taken six years earlier.
I was leaving an airport.
I had no idea anyone was watching.
The second photograph.
Me at a restaurant.
Third.
Me at my mother's house.
Fourth.
Me at the resort.
Hundreds of photographs.
Dates.
Locations.
Habits.
People I spoke to.
Places I visited.
My entire life.
I felt violated.
“How long?”
Richard whispered:
“Six years.”
“Who took these?”
“Marcus's people.”
“And you?”
“I was ordered to review them.”
I looked at him.
“You watched me.”
“Yes.”
“You monitored me.”
“Yes.”
“You knew where I was.”
“Yes.”
“You knew when I was vulnerable.”
“Yes.”
I slapped the folder onto the table.
“And you still say you were protecting me?”
Richard flinched.
“I was trying to keep you alive.”
I stared at him.
“Then why did you let Vanessa humiliate me?”
He closed his eyes.
“Because Marcus needed you angry.”
“Why?”
“So you'd fight.”
“Fight whom?”
“Everyone.”
I frowned.
“Why?”
“Because when you started fighting the resort's legal battle, you'd trigger the hidden ownership clauses.”
I stared.
“What clauses?”
Richard looked at me.
“The ones your father created.”
My heart pounded.
“If I challenge the ownership…”
“The archive activates.”
I froze.
“So all of this…”
“Yes.”
“Was designed to make me fight.”
“Yes.”
“And Marcus wanted that.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Richard's voice dropped.
“Because he can't open the archive.”
I whispered:
“But I can.”
Richard nodded.
“You're the key.”
I stood alone in the office after Richard left.
The sun was beginning to rise.
For the first time in two days, the sky was turning pale.
I should have felt relief.
Instead, I felt betrayed.
My father had hidden the truth.
Richard had betrayed me.
Marcus had manipulated everyone.
Evelyn had disappeared.
Vanessa had lied.
And yet one question remained.
Why had Richard truly stayed?
Money could explain seventy-three million.
Fear could explain six years.
His family could explain obedience.
But it couldn't explain one thing.
The night at the resort.
The moment Vanessa had put the chain around my neck.
Richard had watched.
He could have stopped her.
He hadn't.
I called him back.
He answered immediately.
“Amelia?”
“Come upstairs.”
Five minutes later, he entered.
I looked at him.
“You told me everything.”
“Yes.”
“No.”
He stopped.
“You told me everything you wanted me to know.”
His face changed.
I continued.
“Why didn't you stop Vanessa?”
He looked down.
“Because Marcus ordered me not to.”
“Why?”
“Because he wanted the footage.”
“Why?”
“To prove you were unstable.”
“Why?”
“To activate the emergency control clause.”
I frowned.
“What clause?”
“If the founder was deemed mentally unfit, temporary control could be transferred to the board.”
I stared.
“So he needed evidence that I was unstable.”
“Yes.”
“And Vanessa staged the humiliation.”
“Yes.”
“But why did she hurt me?”
“She didn't know you were the founder.”
I looked at him.
“She knew.”
“No.”
“She called me founder.”
Richard shook his head.
“Not then.”
I remembered Vanessa's expression.
The chain.
The cameras.
Her certainty.
Then I realized.
She hadn't known who I was.
Not until I revealed the founder badge.
Which meant—
someone had wanted her to attack a supposedly powerless woman.
And that person had known exactly what would happen when I fought back.
I looked at Richard.
“You knew who I was.”
“Yes.”
“You knew the badge was around my neck.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Vanessa would grab it.”
“Yes.”
“You knew the cameras were recording.”
“Yes.”
“Then you didn't just fail to stop her.”
I stepped closer.
“You arranged it.”
Richard's face collapsed.
“I was ordered to.”
“By Marcus?”
He didn't answer.
“By whom?”
Silence.
“Richard.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“Not Marcus.”
I froze.
“Then who?”
He whispered:
“Your father.”
I stared at him.
“My father ordered you to let Vanessa humiliate me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he needed to know whether you were ready.”
“For what?”
Richard's voice broke.
“To become the Founder.”
I couldn't speak.
“My father knew I would return.”
“Yes.”
“He knew Marcus would come.”
“Yes.”
“He knew the ownership documents would be forged.”
“Yes.”
“He knew Richard would betray me.”
“Yes.”
I felt tears rise.
“And he knew I would hate him.”
Richard nodded.
“He said you had to.”
“Why?”
“Because if you trusted anyone completely…”
He swallowed.
“…you would never survive what comes next.”
I stared at him.
“What's next?”
Richard looked toward the floor.
“The opening of the vault.”
At 5:06 a.m., every screen in the resort turned on.
The same symbol appeared.
The circle.
Three intersecting lines.
Then a countdown.
72:00:00
I stared.
Nora rushed into the room.
“What is that?”
I didn't answer.
The countdown began.
71:59:59
71:59:58
Three days.
The same deadline.
But now I understood.
It wasn't a threat.
It was a timer.
A system.
Something beneath the resort had been waiting for me.
And someone had activated it.
Then a message appeared.
FOUNDER IDENTIFIED.
Another.
BLOODLINE CONFIRMED.
Another.
ARCHIVE ACCESS PENDING.
And finally:
SECOND FOUNDER REQUIRED.
I stared at the screen.
“Who is the second founder?”
Richard stepped forward.
He looked at me.
Then toward the elevator.
“I think you already know.”
The doors opened.
Evelyn stood inside.
She looked at me.
And behind her—
was Marcus.
For the first time, they weren't hiding.
Evelyn smiled.
Marcus remained silent.
Then Evelyn spoke.
“Amelia.”
I looked at her.
“It's time.”
“For what?”
She held out her hand.
“The truth.”
I didn't move.
She smiled.
“Your father didn't build the resort to protect you.”
I felt my heart stop.
“He built it…”
She paused.
“…to protect the world from what your family created.”
The countdown continued.
71:58:31
May you like
And beneath our feet—
something ancient unlocked.
