Chapter 5

Blood Doesn't Lie

The message sat on the table like a weapon.

Your mother didn't disappear. She was murdered.

And the person who killed her is still inside the Whitmore family.

Lillian read the words again and again, hoping they would somehow change.

They didn't.

Her entire life had been built on a simple belief.

Her parents were gone.

Her past was a mystery.

Her future belonged only to herself.

But in less than twenty-four hours, every certainty had collapsed.

She had a mother she never knew.

A father who was supposedly dead.

A family that had searched for her.

And a killer who had been hiding among them for twenty-six years.

Victoria found her in the library before sunrise.

She immediately knew something was wrong.

Lillian didn't cry.

She didn't scream.

She simply placed the note on the table.

Victoria read it.

The color disappeared from her face.

"Who gave you this?"

"I was hoping you could tell me."

Victoria looked away.

That small movement told Lillian everything.

"You know something."

"No."

The answer came too quickly.

Lillian stared at her.

"You're lying."

Victoria closed her eyes.

For the first time, Lillian saw something she had never expected from the powerful Whitmore matriarch.

Fear.

The entire family gathered in the main hall.

Ethan stood beside Lillian.

Not as the heir of Whitmore Holdings.

Not as Victoria's son.

But as the man who had promised to protect her.

Daniel Cross arrived minutes later.

His expression was controlled, but Lillian noticed his hands were tense.

Too tense.

"You know about this," she said.

Daniel looked at her.

"I know many things."

"Do you know who killed my mother?"

Silence.

A painful silence.

Then Daniel answered.

"I know who wanted her gone."

"Who?"

Daniel looked toward Victoria.

"Your grandfather."

The room froze.

Victoria's father, Charles Whitmore.

The founder of the family empire.

A man whose portrait hung above the library fireplace.

A man remembered as a visionary businessman.

But according to Daniel, he was also a man obsessed with power.

"He believed the Whitmore bloodline was everything," Daniel explained.

"He believed the company belonged only to those who carried the family name."

Lillian frowned.

"But Amelia was his daughter."

"Yes."

"So why would he hurt her?"

"Because Amelia refused to obey him."

Twenty-six years earlier, Amelia had discovered financial documents showing that Charles had secretly transferred portions of the Whitmore inheritance into hidden accounts.

Money meant for future generations.

Money that belonged to the family trust.

When Amelia confronted him, Charles threatened to remove her from the family.

But Amelia did something unexpected.

She fought back.

She prepared to expose him.

And she had one final advantage.

Her child.

The next legal heir.

Lillian.

"He couldn't remove Amelia without creating suspicion," Daniel said.

"So he targeted the child."

Lillian's voice was quiet.

Daniel nodded.

"He planned to make you disappear."

Ethan clenched his fists.

"But Charles died years ago."

"Yes."

"Then who continued his plan?"

Nobody answered.

Because everyone in the room already knew.

Someone had inherited the secret.

Detective Aaron Blake arrived with unexpected news.

"We found Clara Bell."

Everyone turned.

"The midwife?"

"She's alive."

Lillian immediately stood.

"Where?"

"In a small town three hours away."

Victoria looked shocked.

"Why didn't she come forward?"

Aaron hesitated.

"Because she was afraid."

"Of whom?"

He opened a file.

"She refused to say over the phone."

The meeting with Clara took place that afternoon in a quiet countryside house surrounded by old trees.

The woman who opened the door looked much older than her years.

But her eyes were sharp.

The moment she saw Lillian, tears filled them.

"Oh my..."

She covered her mouth.

"Amelia was right."

Lillian stepped forward.

"You knew my mother?"

Clara nodded.

"I held you the night you were born."

Those words broke something inside Lillian.

Not sadness.

Something deeper.

A connection she had never been allowed to have.

"Tell me what happened."

Clara invited them inside.

For nearly an hour, she said nothing.

Then she opened an old wooden drawer.

Inside was a hospital bracelet.

The same one from the box.

But this one had something different.

A name.

Lily Vale.

Clara touched it gently.

"Your mother never wanted you hidden."

"She wanted you safe."

Clara revealed the truth.

The night after Lillian was born, someone broke into the clinic.

They weren't looking for money.

They weren't looking for documents.

They were looking for the baby.

"Amelia knew they would come."

"She prepared a plan."

"She asked me to give you to someone she trusted."

"Who?"

Clara looked toward the window.

"Alexander."

Lillian's heart stopped.

"My father?"

"Yes."

"He was alive?"

Clara nodded.

"He took you away that night."

"Then why didn't he raise me?"

The old woman's expression became painful.

"Because he was being hunted too."

Clara reached for another envelope.

"This was the last thing Amelia gave me."

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was Amelia's.

Lillian's hands trembled as she opened it.

My dear Lily,

If you ever read this, then I failed to give you the childhood you deserved.

But know this.

You were never abandoned.

You were protected.

The people who wanted you gone believed blood was a weakness.

They were wrong.

Blood remembers.

Blood survives.

And blood does not lie.

A noise interrupted them.

A car door slammed outside.

Everyone turned.

A black vehicle sat at the edge of the road.

Someone had followed them.

Aaron immediately reached for his phone.

Too late.

The vehicle sped away.

But not before Lillian saw the person sitting in the passenger seat.

Daniel Cross.

The ride back to the Whitmore estate was silent.

No one spoke.

Daniel had spent thirty years protecting the family.

But now the question had changed.

Was he protecting them?

Or was he protecting the secret?

When they arrived, Lillian found something waiting on the front steps.

A small package.

Inside was a photograph.

An old photograph.

It showed Amelia holding baby Lillian.

Standing beside them was another person.

Someone who should not have been there.

Someone everyone believed had nothing to do with that night.

On the back of the photograph were six words:

Ask Ethan about his birth.

Lillian slowly looked up.

Ethan was standing behind her.

His face had turned completely pale.

Because he knew exactly what the photograph meant.

The secret that destroyed Amelia's life...

May you like

Was not only about Lillian.

It was about him too.
