Chapter 9

Chapter 9
The Family Trial
The name on the page burned into everyone's mind.
Amelia Vale.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The accusation was impossible.
Amelia was the victim.
The mother who had lost her children.
The woman who had spent twenty-six years hiding from the people who wanted her erased.
Yet the evidence sat directly in front of them.
A list.
A warning.
A name.
Her name.
Victoria was the first to break the silence.
"No."
Her voice was weak.
"That is not possible."
Amelia stared at the paper.
Her face showed no anger.
Only pain.
"Someone wants you to believe that."
Aaron carefully picked up the ledger page.
"Or someone wants us to ask why your name is there."
Everyone looked at him.
The detective continued.
"The person behind this knows exactly how we think."
"They don't need to prove Amelia is guilty."
"They only need to create doubt."
But doubt had already entered the room.
And once it entered, it was difficult to remove.
Lillian looked at her mother.
The woman she had spent her entire life searching for.
She wanted to believe Amelia.
She needed to believe her.
But she also knew something important.
Secrets had destroyed this family before.
Trust without proof had already cost them twenty-six years.
"Mother..."
The word felt strange.
New.
Fragile.
Amelia looked at her.
"I know what you're thinking."
"I don't know what to think."
Amelia nodded.
"You have every right."
The next day, the Whitmore estate became the center of a media storm.
Someone had leaked information about the missing heir.
About Amelia's return.
About the hidden records.
But the biggest headline was not about the lost daughter.
It was about the accusation.
AMELIA WHITMORE SUSPECTED IN FAMILY DISAPPEARANCE MYSTERY
The world that had once forgotten Amelia now remembered her for the wrong reason.
Inside the estate, the family gathered for what Victoria called a "trial."
Not a legal trial.
A family trial.
Everyone who carried a piece of the truth sat around the long dining table.
Victoria at one end.
Amelia opposite her.
Lillian and Ethan between them.
Daniel Cross stood nearby.
Aaron recorded every statement.
"We spent twenty-six years believing the wrong story," Victoria said.
"Today, we find the real one."
The first person questioned was Daniel.
"You knew Amelia was alive."
"Yes."
"You helped hide her."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Daniel looked at Amelia.
"Because she asked me."
Victoria's expression hardened.
"Why should we believe you?"
Daniel looked down.
"Because I failed her."
The room went quiet.
"What happened that night?" Lillian asked.
Daniel closed his eyes.
"The plan was simple."
"Amelia and the children would disappear temporarily."
"Once Charles was exposed, they would return."
"But someone found out."
Daniel explained.
The person who leaked the plan knew everything.
The safe locations.
The transportation routes.
The false identities.
Only a handful of people knew.
Amelia.
Daniel.
Sophia Reed.
And one other person.
"Who?" Aaron asked.
Daniel hesitated.
Then answered.
"Victoria."
The room froze.
Victoria stared at him.
"You think I betrayed my own daughter?"
"No."
Daniel's answer surprised everyone.
"I think someone used you."
"What does that mean?"
Daniel looked at the old family portrait hanging behind her.
"Charles controlled this family long before he died."
He explained the truth.
Charles knew Victoria would never willingly hurt Amelia.
So he manipulated her.
He created false evidence.
He convinced Victoria that Amelia planned to destroy the family.
That she intended to take everything and abandon them.
Victoria remembered.
The arguments.
The fear.
The confusion.
She had thought she was protecting the family.
But she had unknowingly helped Charles's plan.
Lillian looked at Victoria.
"Did you know about the clinic?"
Victoria closed her eyes.
"I knew Amelia was in danger."
"But I didn't know the details."
"Then why didn't you help her?"
A tear fell down Victoria's face.
"Because I believed the lies."
For the first time, Lillian saw Victoria not as the cruel woman from the wedding.
Not as the woman who tore her dress apart.
But as another victim of the same person.
Charles Whitmore.
A man who had controlled everyone around him.
Even after death.
Then Aaron placed a new piece of evidence on the table.
"We found this hidden inside the family archives."
It was an audio recording.
Twenty-six years old.
The label read:
Conversation — Night Before Disappearance
Everyone became silent.
They played it.
Static filled the room.
Then Charles Whitmore's voice appeared.
"You have no idea what you are risking."
Amelia's younger voice answered.
"I know exactly what I am risking."
"My children."
Charles laughed.
"You think love protects people?"
"No."
"It makes them easier to control."
Everyone listened.
Then came the words that changed everything.
Charles said:
"You don't understand, Amelia."
"The heir is not the daughter."
A pause.
"The heir is the child who survives."
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Lillian looked at Ethan.
The meaning was horrifying.
Charles had never cared about blood.
He cared about control.
He wanted a child he could shape.
A child he could manipulate.
Then the final piece appeared.
Aaron received a message from his team.
"We traced the black ledger."
Everyone turned.
"Where?"
The detective looked at Amelia.
"It was copied."
"Years ago."
"Before it disappeared."
"Someone made another version."
Lillian asked:
"Who has it?"
Aaron hesitated.
Then answered:
"The person who sent the threats."
"And we found the location."
The address appeared on the screen.
An abandoned Whitmore property.
A place that had been empty for decades.
The old family clinic.
The place where Lillian was born.
Before anyone could leave, Amelia stopped them.
"There is something you need to know."
Everyone looked at her.
She held the jade hairpin.
"The person who took the ledger isn't trying to destroy us."
"What?"
"They're trying to force us to remember."
Lillian frowned.
"Remember what?"
Amelia looked toward the dark window.
"The night I disappeared..."
Her voice trembled.
"I was not the only one who vanished."
A cold silence filled the room.
"What do you mean?"
Amelia looked at Ethan.
"Your brother was there."
Everyone turned.
Ethan froze.
"My brother?"
Amelia nodded slowly.
"The night Lily was taken..."
"There was another child."
Lillian felt her heart stop.
Another child?
Another secret?
Another name erased?
Amelia whispered:
"And that child knows who really betrayed this family."
At that moment, every phone in the room received the same message.
No number.
No sender.
Only a photograph.
An old photograph.
A child standing outside the clinic twenty-six years ago.
And beneath it:
May you like
The trial has begun.
Now choose who you believe.
