Chapter 10: The Night of Broken Crowns

Chapter 10: The Night of Broken Crowns

Every powerful family had a moment when the illusion finally died.

A moment when the expensive suits, the perfect speeches, and the carefully constructed reputation could no longer hide what was underneath.

For the Vale family, that moment happened twenty years ago.

The night of the Winter Crown Gala.

A night everyone remembered differently.

The newspapers called it a celebration.

The company called it a misunderstanding.

The family called it a tragedy.

But nobody called it what it really was.

A battlefield.

Elara stood inside the old ballroom where the gala had taken place.

The same room.

The same marble floor.

The same massive chandelier.

The only difference was that now she knew the truth.

This was not where her family lost everything.

This was where someone had planned to make them lose everything.

"You shouldn't be here."

The voice came from behind her.

Elara turned.

Victoria Ashford stood near the entrance.

For a moment, neither woman spoke.

Then Elara said:

"You were here that night."

Victoria did not deny it.

"Yes."

"You knew what was going to happen."

A long silence.

"I knew something would happen."

Elara's eyes narrowed.

"That's not an answer."

Victoria looked around the empty ballroom.

"No."

"It isn't."

Twenty Years Earlier

The Winter Crown Gala was supposed to be Edward Vale's greatest achievement.

The announcement that Vale Holdings had become one of the most influential companies in the world.

Politicians attended.

Investors attended.

Industry leaders attended.

Everyone wanted to stand beside the Vale family.

Because success attracted people.

But it also attracted those who wanted to own it.

Edward Vale entered the ballroom that evening believing he had finally built something permanent.

He was wrong.

Adrian remembered the night differently.

He remembered his father smiling.

He remembered Isabella dancing.

He remembered Elara, still a child, laughing in the hallway.

He remembered thinking:

"Nothing can destroy this."

That was the mistake.

He believed happiness was proof of safety.

At midnight, Edward received a message.

One sentence.

Check the account.

He ignored it at first.

Then another message arrived.

Your company is no longer yours.

The financial records had changed.

Ownership transfers.

Emergency agreements.

Board approvals.

Everything legal.

Everything clean.

Everything planned.

The crown had not been stolen.

It had been handed over.

Present Day

Elara looked at Victoria.

"Who sent the message?"

Victoria did not answer.

"Victoria."

Finally:

"Henry Whitmore."

Elara's expression hardened.

"But Henry was only one piece."

Victoria nodded.

"Yes."

"Lucian."

Victoria looked away.

"Yes."

Elara walked through the ballroom.

Every corner carried a memory.

A place where someone smiled.

A place where someone lied.

"Why didn't my grandfather expose them?"

Victoria answered quietly.

"Because he tried."

Elara stopped.

"What?"

"He called a private meeting that night."

"With who?"

Victoria's eyes met hers.

"Everyone involved."

The forgotten meeting.

The one never recorded.

The one erased from history.

Edward Vale gathered the people closest to him.

Henry Whitmore.

Lucian Ashford.

Victoria.

Senior executives.

Board members.

He placed the evidence on the table.

The contracts.

The transfers.

The hidden accounts.

And he said:

"I know what you did."

For a moment...

They were afraid.

Because Edward had something they didn't expect.

Proof.

But Lucian did something Edward never predicted.

He didn't deny it.

He admitted it.

"Yes."

"We did."

Edward asked:

"Why?"

Lucian's answer became the foundation of everything that followed.

"Because you built an empire and believed it belonged to everyone who helped create it."

A pause.

"It doesn't."

"It belongs to whoever is strong enough to take it."

Elara felt sick.

"He actually believed that."

Victoria nodded.

"That was the most frightening thing about him."

"Not greed."

"Not ambition."

"Conviction."

The ballroom lights flickered.

Elara looked around.

"How did my mother disappear that night?"

Victoria became still.

"She found out Edward had hidden something."

"The contract?"

"No."

Victoria shook her head.

"Something more dangerous."

"What?"

"The identity of the person inside the family who helped Lucian."

Elara froze.

"Inside the family?"

Victoria nodded.

"Lucian could not have done this alone."

Before Elara could ask more, the ballroom doors opened.

Adrian walked inside.

His face was pale.

"Elara."

She turned.

"What happened?"

He held a document.

"I found this in the archive."

Something in his expression frightened her.

"What is it?"

Adrian handed it to her.

A transfer agreement.

Dated the night of the Winter Crown Gala.

The signature at the bottom belonged to someone she knew.

Someone she trusted.

Someone who had spent years protecting the Vale family.

Adrian Vale.

Elara looked up.

"No."

Her father said nothing.

Because he knew.

The signature was real.

Victoria whispered:

"Now you understand."

Elara looked between them.

"The enemy didn't break the crown."

A pause.

"The enemy wore it."

That night, the truth finally revealed itself.

The greatest betrayal in Vale history was not committed by an outsider.

It was committed by someone who had the family name.

Someone who sat at their table.

Someone who called himself protector.

And for the first time in her life...

Elara wondered if the person she trusted most...

May you like

Was the person she should fear.
