Chapter 3: The Man Behind Nathan's Smile

Chapter 3: The Man Behind Nathan's Smile

Nathan Vale had spent his entire life mastering one skill.

Making people believe he was fearless.

He learned it from his father.

He perfected it in boardrooms.

He used it against competitors, employees, and anyone foolish enough to underestimate him.

A calm expression.

A controlled voice.

A smile that revealed nothing.

But there was one person who had always seen through him.

Victoria Ashford.

The office at the top of the Ashford Tower overlooked the city like a throne.

Floor-to-ceiling glass walls.

Dark wooden furniture.

A collection of priceless artwork.

Everything in the room represented power.

Everything except the man standing inside it.

Nathan stood before Victoria with his hands behind his back.

He hated this room.

Not because it was intimidating.

Because it reminded him of the truth.

No matter how expensive his suit was.

No matter how respected his name became.

He was still here because someone else allowed him to be.

Victoria sat behind her desk.

She was in her late sixties, but age had not weakened her presence.

Her silver hair was perfectly arranged.

Her black dress was simple.

Almost modest.

But Nathan knew better.

People who truly had power rarely needed to display it.

"You failed."

Her words were quiet.

That made them worse.

Nathan kept his expression neutral.

"Elara survived because of unexpected circumstances."

Victoria looked up.

"Unexpected?"

Nathan said nothing.

"You had a private location."

"You controlled the security."

"You controlled the information."

She leaned back.

"And somehow, the daughter of Adrian Vale walked out alive."

Nathan's jaw tightened.

"I underestimated her."

Victoria smiled slightly.

"No."

"You underestimated yourself."

The words struck harder than an insult.

Because Nathan knew they were true.

He had spent years pretending he was the hunter.

But last night...

For the first time...

He had felt like prey.

"She knows about Project Eclipse."

Nathan said.

Victoria's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Nathan noticed.

"How much?"

"Enough to know there is someone above me."

A long silence.

Victoria stood and walked toward the window.

"The problem with intelligent people..."

She said.

"...is that they think discovering a secret means understanding it."

She looked at the city below.

"Elara has found the door."

"And?"

"She doesn't know what is behind it."

Nathan exhaled.

"So what do we do?"

Victoria turned.

"You?"

A pause.

"You do nothing."

Nathan frowned.

"What?"

"You have already done enough damage."

The statement offended him.

But he hid it.

"After everything I've done for you..."

Victoria interrupted.

"Everything you did was because you wanted something."

Silence.

She walked closer.

"Nathan, never confuse being useful with being important."

Those words stayed with him.

Because they described his entire existence.

He had spent years believing he was part of the Ashford legacy.

But perhaps he was only a tool.

A very expensive tool.

But still a tool.

Twenty Years Earlier

Nathan was twenty-eight when Victoria first found him.

At that time, he was not powerful.

Not feared.

Not respected.

He was simply ambitious.

His family had money.

But not influence.

They lived close enough to wealthy people to see their world.

But never close enough to enter it.

Nathan hated that feeling.

Being almost important.

Almost accepted.

Almost powerful.

Victoria understood that.

She met him at a private investment dinner.

Everyone ignored him.

Except her.

"You don't belong here."

She told him.

Nathan was offended.

"I do."

Victoria smiled.

"No."

"You want to."

That was the first time someone had understood him.

She offered him a position.

A connection.

A future.

But there was a condition.

"You must understand one thing."

Victoria said.

"Families like the Vales are not destroyed by enemies."

She looked directly at him.

"They are destroyed by people who want their place."

Nathan understood immediately.

The plan was simple.

Gain trust.

Create weakness.

Wait.

For years, Nathan became the perfect ally.

The loyal businessman.

The reliable partner.

The man everyone underestimated.

But he never realized one thing.

Victoria was doing the same thing to him.

Present Day

Nathan returned to his private residence after meeting Victoria.

The house was enormous.

Beautiful.

Empty.

He poured himself a drink.

But his hand shook.

He hated that.

Fear was something he caused.

Not something he experienced.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

"Who is this?"

A familiar voice responded.

"Still pretending you are in control?"

Nathan froze.

"Who are you?"

The caller laughed softly.

"You really never asked enough questions."

Nathan stood.

The voice continued.

"Victoria told you she saved you."

A pause.

"She didn't."

Nathan's expression changed.

"Where did you get this number?"

"I know everything about you, Nathan."

The call ended.

For several seconds, he stood completely still.

Then he noticed something.

On his desk.

A small envelope.

He had locked the door before leaving.

Inside was a photograph.

A younger Nathan.

Standing beside Victoria.

Standing beside Adrian Vale.

But that was impossible.

Because the photograph was dated ten years before Nathan claimed to have met Victoria.

On the back:

You were never chosen.

You were placed.

Nathan stared at the words.

For the first time in decades...

He questioned everything.

Meanwhile, across the city, Elara sat with her father studying Project Eclipse.

She had begun searching through the old files.

Then she found something.

A name.

Not Victoria.

Not Nathan.

Someone else.

Someone who appeared in every major decision.

Every company transfer.

Every disappearance.

A name hidden beneath layers of documents.

Lucian Ashford.

Elara looked at her father.

"Who is he?"

Adrian became silent.

Too silent.

"Dad."

Finally, he answered.

"Lucian Ashford was Victoria's older brother."

Elara waited.

"And?"

Adrian looked at the documents.

"He was the real architect."

The room became cold.

"Victoria controls Nathan."

Adrian whispered.

"But Lucian controls Victoria."

Elara stared at the name.

The enemy was not a man with a cane.

Not a woman in the shadows.

Not even a family.

It was an entire system.

A system built over decades.

And Nathan Vale?

He was not the king.

May you like

He was only the first piece on the board to fall.
