Chapter 9: The Father’s Last Recording

Chapter 9: The Father’s Last Recording
The old recording room beneath the Vale estate had not been opened in twenty years.
That was the first thing Adrian told her.
The second thing was more important.
"Your grandfather built this room for one reason."
Elara looked at the thick steel door in front of them.
"What reason?"
Adrian placed his hand on the lock.
"Because he knew there would come a time when speaking the truth became dangerous."
The door opened with a heavy metallic sound.
Inside was not a secret vault.
Not a hidden fortune.
Not another collection of documents.
It was a room designed for one purpose.
To preserve a voice.
The walls were lined with old recording equipment.
Tape machines.
Microphones.
Storage shelves.
Backup systems.
A place frozen in time.
Elara stepped inside slowly.
"How many secrets did Grandfather leave behind?"
Adrian gave a tired smile.
"Enough to make sure someone would eventually find them."
They had discovered the room because of the final clue inside Edward Vale's journal.
A single sentence written on the last page:
When the family forgets my voice, let the machine remember.
At first, Elara thought it referred to the old recording devices.
She was wrong.
The machine was not the secret.
The recording was.
Adrian walked toward the central table.
On it sat a small black case.
Inside was a single cassette.
No label.
No date.
No explanation.
Only a handwritten message.
For Adrian.
Elara looked at her father.
"You knew this existed."
Adrian nodded.
"But you never listened?"
"No."
"Why?"
Her father looked at the cassette.
"Because I was afraid of what I would hear."
The old tape player clicked.
The room filled with static.
Then a voice.
Edward Vale.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakably strong.
"Adrian..."
Her father's expression changed instantly.
Hearing a dead man's voice was different from reading his words.
Words could be ignored.
A voice could not.
"If you are hearing this, then I failed to protect the family from what is coming."
Elara sat down.
"But before you blame yourself, understand this."
A pause.
"I did not fail because I trusted the wrong people."
Static.
"I failed because I believed people would choose what was right when given the opportunity."
The words hit harder than expected.
Edward continued.
"Lucian Ashford does not believe in loyalty."
Elara looked at Adrian.
There it was.
The name.
"He believes every person has a breaking point."
The tape continued.
"He studies people. Their desires. Their fears. Their weaknesses."
"Then he creates situations where betrayal becomes the easiest choice."
Elara thought about Julian.
Nathan.
Victoria.
All the people trapped by fear.
Edward's voice continued.
"But Lucian made one mistake."
A pause.
"He believes everyone has a price."
The recording became quieter.
"He never understood that some people value truth more than comfort."
Elara felt something inside her shift.
Her grandfather was not just leaving evidence.
He was leaving a warning.
Then came the part that changed everything.
"Adrian, if Elara finds this recording, it means she is already involved."
Adrian froze.
Elara looked at him.
"Do not try to remove her from this fight."
Silence.
"You will want to protect her."
A pause.
"That is what fathers do."
Adrian's eyes lowered.
"But protection without trust becomes another prison."
The room became completely silent.
Because Edward had understood something Adrian had not.
Elara did not need to be hidden.
She needed to be prepared.
The recording continued.
"There is something you must tell her."
Adrian looked up.
His face changed.
Elara noticed.
"You knew."
He didn't answer.
The recording played.
"Tell Elara the truth about her mother."
Her heart stopped.
"Isabella Vale was not taken because she discovered Project Eclipse."
Elara leaned forward.
"She disappeared because she was the only person who knew how to destroy it."
The room felt smaller.
Her mother.
The mystery of her entire life.
"Isabella found the original agreement between Lucian Ashford and the people who helped him build his network."
A pause.
"The contract that proves everything."
Elara whispered:
"The contract."
The same one everyone had been searching for.
The one that could destroy them.
Edward continued.
"But the contract was not hidden in a bank."
Static.
"Not in a company archive."
Another pause.
"Isabella hid it somewhere Lucian would never search."
The tape stopped.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then the machine clicked again.
A second recording began.
This time...
A woman's voice.
Elara immediately recognized it.
Not because she remembered it.
Because she had heard it in old home videos.
Her mother's voice.
"If you are hearing this, Elara..."
Tears immediately filled her eyes.
Her mother.
Alive in a way she had not been for years.
"I am sorry."
The words almost broke her.
"I wanted to come back."
A shaky breath.
"I tried."
Elara covered her mouth.
Adrian turned away.
"But Lucian knows how to make people disappear without killing them."
Silence.
"He removes their identity."
"Their reputation."
"Their connections."
"Until the world believes they never mattered."
The recording continued.
"Elara, if you found this, then you are old enough to know the truth."
A pause.
"Your family was not destroyed because we were weak."
"We were destroyed because we trusted people who knew how to pretend."
Then Isabella said the words Elara would never forget.
"The person closest to Lucian is the one who knows how to defeat him."
The recording ended.
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
Finally, Elara looked at her father.
"You knew about Mom."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"Not everything."
"But something."
"Yes."
"How long?"
"Years."
Her anger rose.
"You let me believe she abandoned me."
Adrian looked devastated.
"I was trying to protect you."
Elara stood.
"And you became exactly what Grandfather warned you about."
Her father went silent.
She regretted the words immediately.
But they were true.
Later that night, Elara replayed the recording alone.
She focused on one sentence.
"The person closest to Lucian is the one who knows how to defeat him."
Who was closest?
Victoria?
No.
She was controlled by him.
Nathan?
No.
He was a pawn.
Julian?
Maybe.
But he was afraid.
Then Elara noticed something.
A detail nobody else had noticed.
At the end of Isabella's recording...
There was another sound.
A door opening.
A man's voice.
Quiet.
Familiar.
And one sentence:
"You should not have found this."
Elara froze.
Because the voice was not Lucian.
It was someone she knew.
Someone who had been helping her.
Someone who had earned her trust.
Her phone suddenly received a message.
Unknown number.
You heard the recording.
Another message.
Now ask yourself why your father never told you who stopped your mother from leaving.
Elara stared at the screen.
Because the truth had changed again.
The enemy was not only outside the family.
May you like
It had been standing beside them.
