CHAPTER 2 – The Briefcase No One Expected

The dining room remained silent.

Emma stayed on the floor for a moment, one hand pressed against the polished marble.

No one reached out.

Not Daniel.

Not his parents.

Not the friends who had laughed only seconds earlier.

She slowly stood, brushed the dust from her dress, and calmly placed her wedding ring beside her untouched dinner plate.

Daniel smirked.

"So... you're finally giving up?"

Emma looked at him without anger.

"No."

"I'm finally letting go."

At that exact moment, the front doors opened.

An elderly man in a charcoal suit walked inside carrying a worn leather briefcase.

His silver hair was neatly combed, and despite his age, his posture remained perfectly straight.

Daniel frowned.

"Who invited him?"

Emma answered quietly.

"I did."

The man approached the table and nodded respectfully.

"Good evening."

"My name is Jonathan Reed."

"I served as legal counsel to the late William Carter for thirty-eight years."

Daniel's confident smile faded.

"My grandfather's attorney?"

Jonathan nodded.

"He instructed me to appear only if one specific condition was met."

He looked toward Emma.

"Mrs. Carter..."

"Have you removed your wedding ring willingly?"

Emma nodded once.

"I have."

Jonathan slowly opened the briefcase.

Inside lay several sealed envelopes, a flash drive, and a thick folder bearing William Carter's signature.

Daniel suddenly looked uneasy.

"What is this?"

Jonathan met his eyes.

"Your grandfather anticipated this day."

"He believed character reveals itself when kindness disappears."

The room grew still.

Jonathan lifted the first envelope.

"It contains an amendment to William Carter's estate."

May you like

"And it becomes effective the moment Emma chooses to leave this marriage."

Daniel's hands began to tremble.
