Chapter 1: The Silence After the Music

Chapter 1: The Silence After the Music

The last word didn’t finish like a sentence.

It landed like something heavier.

Since his mother died.

The ballroom didn’t react at first. It simply… stalled. Even the orchestra seemed unsure whether to continue, the violins holding a note that suddenly had nowhere to go.

The boy didn’t move.

Neither did I.

His fingers were still wrapped around mine, small and steady in a way that didn’t match the chaos unfolding around us.

Vincenzo Moretti stood motionless, but the air around him had changed. Not anger. Not shock.

Something quieter.

Something far more dangerous.

Grief, held too long in a man who had never learned how to let it fall.

“You brought him onto the floor,” he said at last.

It wasn’t a question.

I swallowed. “He asked.”

A flicker crossed his face. So fast most people would’ve missed it.

But I didn’t.

Because I was still holding his son’s hand.

The boy looked up at him.

“Dad,” he said softly.

That single word did something the room couldn’t see.

But I felt it.

Like a shift in pressure. Like a locked door somewhere inside the man finally remembering it had a key.

Vincenzo’s gaze dropped to his son.

And stayed there.

For a long moment, no one spoke.

Then—

“I didn’t know you were watching,” he said quietly.

The boy tilted his head. “You were busy.”

No accusation. No emotion added.

May you like

Just fact.

And somehow, that made it worse.
