Chapter 3: The Edge of Everything

Chapter 3: The Edge of Everything

Vincenzo crouched slightly, bringing himself closer to his son’s height. The entire ballroom seemed to hold its breath again.

“What did she teach you about dancing?” he asked gently.

The boy hesitated.

Then, carefully: “That I do it wrong.”

Something in Vincenzo’s face cracked—not visibly, but enough that I felt it like a change in temperature.

“You don’t do it wrong,” he said.

The boy looked unconvinced.

So Vincenzo stood again and, slowly, extended his hand.

Not to me.

To his son.

The boy stared at it.

For a long time.

Then, hesitantly, he let go of mine.

A strange emptiness followed, though I knew it wasn’t loss.

It was space being transferred.

He took his father’s hand.

Vincenzo guided him onto the floor—not into the center, but not away from it either. Just close enough to the edge where the world felt less sharp.

The orchestra, sensing something unscripted, softened their tempo.

And then—

They danced.

It wasn’t graceful.

It wasn’t meant to be.

It was careful. Awkward. Honest.

A father learning the rhythm he had missed.

A son relearning that he could exist inside it.

And me—

I stepped back.

May you like

Just far enough to stop being part of the moment.

But not far enough to stop witnessing it.
