Chapter 2 – The Camera That Never Lied

Chapter 2 – The Camera That Never Lied
The ballroom didn’t move.
Not after my words.
Not after Preston’s smile vanished.
Not even after Sophie’s faint whimper against my shoulder.
The red light above the entrance blinked steadily.
Calm.
Unbothered.
Like it had been waiting for this moment all along.
“Seize the footage,” a voice suddenly ordered.
The hotel manager stepped forward, pale-faced.
“Yes, ma’am… the system is already synced to the central server.”
A screen rolled down from the ceiling.
Preston’s breathing changed.
He took a step back.
“No,” he said quietly.
But it was already too late.
The footage appeared.
The entire ballroom became a courtroom.
Sophie sat at the table.
Kicking her small feet.
Laughing.
Drinking juice through a straw.
Never once leaving my side.
Minutes passed.
Then the moment everyone was waiting for.
Preston walked into frame.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Holding his own phone in his hand.
The room went dead silent.
He looked around carefully.
Checked the distance between tables.
Then…
He slipped it into Sophie’s jacket pocket.
Gasps erupted instantly.
My mother shook her head in disbelief.
“That’s impossible…”
But the footage didn’t stop.
It continued.
Preston “found” the phone.
Pulled it out dramatically.
Raised it like a trophy.
And pointed directly at my daughter.
“Thief,” he had said.
The same word that broke everything.
The screen froze.
Then zoomed.
High resolution.
Clear enough to see his expression.
Not confusion.
Not shock.
Satisfaction.
The kind that comes from control.
The room erupted.
But this time…
May you like
Not in judgment of Sophie.
In horror of him.
