Chapter 10 – The Enemy Behind Everything

Chapter 10 – The Enemy Behind Everything
Nathan Harrington had spent his entire life surrounded by powerful people.
Business partners.
Politicians.
Investors.
Executives.
People who smiled while shaking his hand and calculated their next move before they even sat down.
He understood deception.
He understood negotiation.
He understood that the business world was built on strategy.
But Daniel Whitmore was different.
Because Daniel had not entered Nathan’s life as a competitor.
He entered as family.
And that made the betrayal impossible to measure.
The photograph remained on Nathan’s phone.
Vanessa standing outside the mansion.
Daniel behind her.
Four words underneath:
You trusted her again.
Nathan stared at the image for several minutes.
Every instinct inside him screamed the same thing.
Do not trust her.
She already lied once.
She already manipulated you.
She already destroyed something you could never get back.
But another voice inside him whispered something else.
A quieter voice.
A voice he hated because it sounded like hope.
What if Daniel wants you to believe she betrayed you?
Nathan hated uncertainty.
In business, uncertainty could be calculated.
Numbers.
Statistics.
Risk analysis.
But emotions were different.
Love.
Trust.
Betrayal.
There was no formula for those.
Ethan watched Nathan carefully.
“You’re thinking about whether she did it.”
Nathan did not answer.
“That means you don’t believe it.”
Nathan looked at him.
“I don’t know what I believe anymore.”
Ethan understood.
Because Vanessa had committed a terrible betrayal.
But Daniel was a different kind of enemy.
Daniel did not simply lie.
He created entire realities.
He made people believe exactly what he wanted.
“We need to find out the truth.”
Nathan nodded.
“How?”
Ethan looked at the photo.
“By doing what Daniel never expected.”
“What?”
“Trusting nobody.”
That night, Nathan returned to the mansion alone.
Not because he trusted Vanessa.
Because he needed answers.
The house was dark.
Quiet.
Almost peaceful.
A strange contrast to the chaos surrounding them.
Nathan found Vanessa in the library.
She was sitting on the floor surrounded by old documents.
She looked exhausted.
When she saw him, she immediately stood.
“What happened?”
Nathan held up his phone.
The photograph.
Vanessa looked at it.
Her face changed.
Not guilt.
Shock.
Real shock.
“Where did you get this?”
Nathan studied her.
“Does it matter?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I have never met Daniel alone.”
Nathan remained silent.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Think carefully.”
She pointed at the picture.
“This was taken from a distance.”
“So?”
“So Daniel wants you to see it.”
Nathan frowned.
“What?”
“If he wanted to prove I was working with him, he would send something clearer.”
She looked at the image.
“This is designed to create suspicion.”
Nathan hated that it made sense.
“Then why was he near you?”
Vanessa looked away.
“He found me.”
“When?”
“Yesterday.”
Nathan’s expression hardened.
“And you didn’t tell me?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“I was trying to confirm something.”
“What?”
She walked to the table.
Opened a folder.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Records.
“I have been tracking Daniel for months.”
Nathan looked through the files.
His anger faded into surprise.
“You were investigating him?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because I realized I was wrong.”
That answer surprised him.
“I thought my enemy was your family.”
She touched the documents.
“But the person who destroyed my family was Daniel.”
A pause.
“And I helped him.”
Nathan looked at her.
“What do you mean?”
Vanessa explained.
After she married Nathan, Daniel secretly contacted her.
He knew about her revenge plan.
He knew everything.
“He encouraged me.”
Nathan frowned.
“Why?”
“Because he needed me close to you.”
The room became silent.
Daniel had not created Vanessa’s plan.
He had used it.
He allowed her to enter Nathan’s life.
He allowed her to hurt him.
Because while Nathan was distracted by his marriage falling apart…
Daniel was preparing the real attack.
“He needed you to hate me.”
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because a family divided is easier to destroy.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
The strategy was brutal.
And brilliant.
Daniel had created enemies inside Nathan’s own life.
Then Vanessa revealed something worse.
“There’s more.”
Nathan looked at her.
“What?”
“Daniel was not trying to steal your company.”
She paused.
“He wanted your father’s hidden files.”
Nathan remembered the documents.
The old records.
The secrets.
“What files?”
“The ones your father hid before he died.”
Nathan frowned.
“My father’s secrets?”
Vanessa nodded.
“Daniel spent twenty years searching for them.”
“Why?”
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because your father discovered what Daniel really wanted.”
Nathan waited.
“Power.”
Daniel Whitmore had spent his entire life moving between companies.
Helping powerful families.
Building trust.
Collecting information.
But his true goal was not wealth.
It was influence.
“He wanted control over powerful people.”
Vanessa explained.
“Your father found out Daniel had enough information to destroy politicians, CEOs, investors…”
She looked at Nathan.
“Entire industries.”
Nathan understood.
Daniel was not fighting for Harrington Global.
He was fighting for something much bigger.
Before they could continue, Ethan called.
Nathan answered.
“What happened?”
Ethan’s voice was urgent.
“You need to come here.”
“Why?”
“I found Daniel’s original plan.”
Twenty minutes later, they arrived at Ethan’s office.
A large screen displayed a timeline.
Years of Daniel’s actions.
Every move.
Every manipulation.
Every person he influenced.
Ethan pointed.
“Look.”
Nathan stared.
The timeline began twenty-five years earlier.
Daniel did not begin with Harrington.
He began with Kensington.
Then several other companies.
Different names.
Different industries.
Different countries.
“He did this before.”
Ethan nodded.
“Many times.”
Nathan looked at the screen.
“So Harrington wasn’t the first.”
“No.”
“Then what makes us different?”
Ethan looked at him.
“Your father found out.”
The answer was terrifying.
Because Daniel did not destroy everyone who discovered him.
Some people disappeared.
Some lost everything.
Some remained silent.
But Richard Harrington fought back.
Quietly.
Secretly.
And before he died…
He hid evidence.
“Where is it?”
Nathan asked.
Ethan shook his head.
“We don’t know.”
Then Vanessa spoke.
“I do.”
Everyone looked at her.
Nathan’s eyes narrowed.
“You do?”
She nodded.
“Your father gave it to someone he trusted.”
“Who?”
Vanessa hesitated.
Then:
“My mother.”
The room went silent.
Nathan stared.
“Your mother?”
“Yes.”
“But she disappeared.”
Vanessa nodded.
“She disappeared because she was protecting it.”
Ethan stood.
“So both families were protecting the same secret.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“Yes.”
Nathan felt something change.
For years, he believed Harrington and Kensington were enemies.
Two families destroyed by each other.
But maybe they were both victims of the same person.
Then Nathan’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A voice appeared.
Older.
Calm.
Familiar.
“Hello, Nathan.”
Nathan froze.
Because he recognized the voice.
“Daniel.”
A soft laugh.
“Good.”
A pause.
“I was beginning to think you would never understand.”
Nathan gripped the phone.
“Where are you?”
Daniel ignored the question.
“You know what I find fascinating about people?”
Silence.
“They always believe betrayal comes from strangers.”
Nathan said nothing.
“But the greatest betrayals…”
Daniel continued.
“Always come from the people closest to you.”
The call ended.
A second later, Ethan’s computer received a notification.
A file.
From Daniel.
The file contained one image.
A photograph from twenty years ago.
Richard Harrington.
Charles Kensington.
Elizabeth Harrington.
And another person.
Nathan stared.
Because the fourth person in the photograph was someone he knew.
Someone still alive.
Someone who had been helping him.
Ethan whispered:
“No…”
Nathan looked at Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
Because she recognized the person too.
The enemy behind everything was finally revealed.
But the truth was more dangerous than anyone imagined.
May you like
Because Daniel Whitmore was not the only person who had been lying.
