Chapter 3 – The Man Who Sold Secrets

Chapter 3 – The Man Who Sold Secrets
Nathan Harrington had spent his entire life believing one thing:
His family had enemies because they were powerful.
That was normal.
Every successful person had competitors.
Every empire created resentment.
Every victory created someone who wanted revenge.
But Ethan’s words changed everything.
The money came from a company connected to your father.
Nathan had heard the sentence.
He understood every word.
But his mind refused to accept the meaning.
Because if Ethan was right…
Then Vanessa’s lie was not just about a fake pregnancy.
It was connected to something much older.
Something buried inside the Harrington family.
“Say that again.”
Nathan’s voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
Ethan knew that tone.
It was the tone Nathan used before making dangerous decisions.
“The payment to Adrian Vale came from Kensington Holdings.”
Nathan stared.
“That’s impossible.”
“I checked three times.”
“Kensington Holdings has been inactive for years.”
“Officially.”
Ethan paused.
“But someone is still moving money through it.”
Nathan walked away from the phone.
The living room suddenly felt smaller.
The walls.
The furniture.
The memories.
Everything that once represented security now felt like part of a trap.
He looked at Vanessa.
She was standing near the window.
Silent.
Not denying anything.
That scared him more than anger would have.
“Vanessa.”
She slowly turned.
Nathan’s voice cracked.
“Did you know?”
She looked at him.
“Know what?”
“That someone connected to your family paid Adrian Vale.”
A long silence.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.”
The answer destroyed something inside Nathan.
Not because she knew.
Because she admitted it so easily.
No excuses.
No surprise.
No confusion.
Just the truth.
“You knew?”
Nathan stepped closer.
“You knew someone was involved?”
Vanessa looked down.
“I knew someone was helping me.”
The room went silent.
Helping.
That word cut deeper than any accusation.
“You planned this.”
Nathan’s voice was shaking.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I had a reason.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“Don’t say that.”
“Listen to me.”
“No.”
Nathan looked at her.
“Do you know what I did these past six months?”
Vanessa said nothing.
“I picked out names.”
His voice broke.
“I imagined our child.”
A pause.
“I talked to a baby who never existed.”
Vanessa looked away.
Because that was the one thing she could not defend.
The fake pregnancy was a weapon.
But Nathan had loved something that was never real.
And that was cruel.
Even to someone who believed she was fighting for justice.
The next morning, Ethan arrived at Nathan’s office.
He carried a folder.
Thick.
Heavy.
Filled with answers Nathan did not want.
“Adrian Vale is the key.”
Ethan placed the folder on the desk.
“He built his reputation by protecting rich people’s secrets.”
Nathan opened it.
Inside were reports.
Payments.
Names.
Cases.
“This man has been doing this for years.”
Ethan continued.
“People go to him when they need something hidden.”
“Like fake pregnancies?”
“Yes.”
Nathan looked at the documents.
“And Vanessa?”
Ethan hesitated.
“She wasn’t his first client.”
The next file contained a list.
Women.
Men.
Companies.
All connected to Adrian Vale.
Some wanted scandals hidden.
Some wanted identities changed.
Some wanted medical records altered.
Adrian Vale was not just a doctor.
He was a man who sold secrets.
Nathan leaned back.
“How much did Vanessa pay him?”
Ethan looked at him.
“She didn’t.”
Nathan frowned.
“What?”
Ethan pointed at a document.
“Someone else paid.”
“Who?”
Ethan hesitated.
Then:
“Charles Kensington.”
Nathan froze.
“Vanessa’s father?”
“Yes.”
“That’s impossible.”
“Why?”
“Because Charles Kensington died fifteen years ago.”
Ethan looked at him.
“That’s what everyone believes.”
For years, Nathan had heard the story.
Charles Kensington.
A businessman who lost everything.
A man who disappeared after financial crimes destroyed his company.
Some believed he died.
Others believed he ran away.
Nobody knew.
But everyone agreed on one thing.
He was gone.
Until now.
Ethan continued.
“I found private records.”
He opened another file.
“There were financial transfers after his supposed death.”
Nathan stared.
“How?”
“Someone continued using his accounts.”
“Someone?”
Ethan nodded.
“Someone with access.”
The room became silent.
Because Nathan understood.
Someone had been moving pieces behind the scenes.
For years.
Meanwhile, Vanessa met Adrian Vale in a private restaurant outside the city.
She sat across from him.
The man who helped create the biggest lie of her life.
“You promised nobody would find out.”
Adrian calmly drank his coffee.
“I promised nobody would find out quickly.”
Vanessa’s eyes hardened.
“You’re enjoying this.”
“No.”
He smiled.
“I’m observing.”
“Observing what?”
“How much you changed.”
Vanessa looked away.
“You don’t know me.”
Adrian laughed softly.
“I know you better than Nathan does.”
That sentence angered her.
Because it was true.
“You helped me because my father paid you.”
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.”
“But why?”
The doctor looked at her.
“Because your father wanted Nathan Harrington to suffer.”
Vanessa became still.
Not destroy.
Not expose.
Suffer.
There was a difference.
“What exactly was his plan?”
Adrian leaned forward.
“Your father believed the Harrington family took everything from him.”
Vanessa looked down.
“He wanted revenge.”
“Yes.”
“And I was the weapon.”
Adrian smiled slightly.
“You were the perfect weapon.”
Vanessa hated those words.
Because deep down, she knew they were true.
She had entered Nathan’s life as a weapon.
But somewhere along the way…
She had forgotten she was supposed to destroy him.
Back at Harrington Global, Nathan was searching through old family records.
He found something strange.
A sealed file.
His father’s name.
The Kensington case.
Twenty years earlier.
Inside were documents he had never seen.
Contracts.
Legal reports.
A settlement agreement.
And one handwritten note.
From his father.
Nathan read it.
And his face changed.
Because the note contained a sentence that changed everything:
“If Charles Kensington ever discovers the truth, he will come for my family.”
Nathan dropped the paper.
Because suddenly…
His father knew.
He knew this day could happen.
He knew someone might come after the Harrington family.
And he never told Nathan.
That night, Nathan confronted Vanessa one more time.
“You knew about my father.”
Vanessa said nothing.
“You knew about the Kensington case.”
Silence.
“You knew from the beginning.”
Finally, Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.”
Nathan stepped back.
The pain on his face was worse than anger.
“How long?”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Before I met you.”
Nathan laughed.
A broken laugh.
“So our first meeting…”
“It wasn’t an accident.”
“Our marriage?”
Vanessa looked at him.
And for the first time…
She looked afraid.
“Tell me.”
Nathan’s voice was almost a whisper.
“Was any of it real?”
Vanessa could not answer.
Because the truth was complicated.
And complicated was sometimes more painful than a simple lie.
Before Nathan could continue, Ethan called again.
This time, his voice sounded different.
Urgent.
“Nathan.”
“What happened?”
“I found Adrian Vale.”
“And?”
A pause.
“He wasn’t working alone.”
Nathan tightened his grip on the phone.
“Who was with him?”
Ethan answered:
“Someone inside Harrington Global.”
Nathan’s blood ran cold.
Because the enemy was not outside.
May you like
It was already inside his empire.
