Chapter 5 – The Secret in Nathan’s Family

Chapter 5 – The Secret in Nathan’s Family
Nathan Harrington had spent his entire life defending his family name.
The Harrington name was more than a surname.
It was an identity.
A symbol.
A legacy built over generations.
His grandfather started with nothing.
His father expanded the company.
Nathan transformed it into an international empire.
Every achievement had carried one message:
The Harrington family did things differently.
They were disciplined.
They were respected.
They were untouchable.
But now Nathan was beginning to understand something painful.
A powerful family could hide powerful secrets.
And sometimes…
The people who built an empire were the same people who buried the truth beneath it.
The words from Ethan continued echoing in his mind.
Your father hid the truth about Vanessa’s mother.
Nathan sat alone in his office long after everyone had left.
The city outside was alive.
Traffic moved.
Lights shined.
People continued their normal lives.
But Nathan felt like his entire world had stopped.
Because everything he believed about his father was changing.
Nathan had loved his father.
Even after his death, he still respected him.
Richard Harrington Sr. had been his hero.
A strict man.
A demanding man.
But a man Nathan believed was honorable.
His father taught him discipline.
He taught him responsibility.
He taught him that a Harrington never ran away from problems.
But what if his father had been the problem?
The next morning, Nathan went to the old Harrington family estate.
A place he rarely visited anymore.
The mansion had belonged to his father for decades.
After his death, Nathan kept it untouched.
Almost like a museum.
Every room contained memories.
Every hallway carried pieces of the past.
But now he was not looking for memories.
He was looking for answers.
Ethan arrived thirty minutes later.
He carried a box of documents.
“I found these hidden in an old storage archive.”
Nathan looked at the box.
“My father kept secrets here?”
Ethan nodded.
“Apparently.”
They opened the files together.
The first documents were normal.
Business records.
Investment reports.
Property agreements.
Nothing unusual.
Then Ethan found a folder marked:
KENSINGTON ACQUISITION — CONFIDENTIAL
Nathan’s expression changed.
“Open it.”
Ethan did.
Inside were documents from twenty years earlier.
A company takeover.
Legal disputes.
Private investigations.
And one name appeared repeatedly.
Charles Kensington.
Nathan read quickly.
His father’s company had acquired Kensington Development after the company suffered a financial collapse.
At first glance, it looked like a normal business deal.
A failing company.
A stronger competitor.
A successful acquisition.
But then Nathan found something strange.
The collapse happened too quickly.
Too perfectly.
Charles Kensington had not simply lost.
He had been destroyed.
Investors withdrew.
Contracts disappeared.
Banks suddenly changed their decisions.
Partners abandoned him.
Everything happened within weeks.
Nathan looked at Ethan.
“This wasn’t a business failure.”
Ethan nodded.
“No.”
“It was an attack.”
The next document made Nathan’s hands tighten.
A private investigation report.
The investigator had written:
Charles Kensington believes Harrington Group intentionally manipulated market conditions to force a takeover.
Nathan shook his head.
“My father wouldn’t do that.”
Ethan did not answer.
And that silence hurt.
“Say something.”
Ethan looked at him.
“I don’t know your father.”
A pause.
“But I know people with power sometimes convince themselves they are doing the right thing.”
Nathan looked away.
Because that possibility scared him.
Not that his father was evil.
But that his father might have believed he was justified.
Then they found the letter.
Hidden behind the final page of the file.
A handwritten note.
No signature.
But Nathan immediately recognized the handwriting.
His father.
Richard,
If Charles ever finds out what really happened, he will come after everything we built.
Protect the family.
Protect Nathan.
Some truths are too dangerous to reveal.
Nathan stared at the words.
Protect Nathan.
That was the part that hurt.
Because his father knew.
He knew there was danger.
And instead of telling Nathan…
He buried it.
“Why would he hide this from me?”
Ethan answered quietly.
“Maybe because he thought he was protecting you.”
Nathan laughed bitterly.
“By lying?”
The door opened.
Both men turned.
Vanessa stood there.
Nathan immediately became cold.
“What are you doing here?”
She looked at the documents.
Then at the letter.
She understood.
“You found it.”
Nathan’s eyes narrowed.
“You knew about this?”
Vanessa slowly nodded.
“Yes.”
The anger that appeared on Nathan’s face was immediate.
“You knew everything.”
“I knew parts of it.”
“You knew my father destroyed your family.”
“Yes.”
“You knew your mother’s death was connected.”
Her expression changed.
“Yes.”
“And you still married me.”
Vanessa looked down.
“I didn’t know how else to get close enough to find the truth.”
Nathan stared.
“Truth?”
He pointed toward the files.
“You already had your answer.”
“No.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I had a story.”
A pause.
“I needed proof.”
Nathan walked closer.
“And I was your investigation?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“At first.”
That answer hurt.
Because it meant there was a second answer.
A different one.
“At first?”
Vanessa looked at him.
“Then I fell in love with you.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
Because those words were exactly what he wanted to hear.
And exactly what he could not trust.
Before anyone could speak, Ethan interrupted.
“There’s something else.”
Nathan looked at him.
“What?”
Ethan held another document.
“I found the original investigation report.”
“So?”
Ethan hesitated.
“The report says Charles Kensington did not cause the collapse.”
Nathan frowned.
“What?”
“The company was healthy.”
A pause.
“Someone inside Harrington Group manipulated the numbers.”
Nathan went silent.
“Who?”
Ethan looked at the paper.
“The report never named the person.”
“Why?”
“Because the investigator disappeared before finishing.”
The room became silent.
Vanessa looked terrified.
Not angry.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
Nathan noticed.
“You knew.”
Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.”
“What?”
“I knew someone inside your family was responsible.”
Nathan stared at her.
“Who?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
“But you suspected.”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Vanessa looked at the old Harrington portrait hanging on the wall.
Then she said the words Nathan never expected.
“The person who destroyed my family…”
She paused.
“Was not your father.”
Nathan felt cold.
“What are you saying?”
Vanessa looked directly at him.
“Your father covered it up.”
A pause.
“But someone else committed the crime.”
Ethan looked at the documents again.
Then suddenly noticed something.
A signature.
A name.
Hidden at the bottom of the report.
A name they had ignored because they thought it was only an assistant.
Ethan whispered:
“No.”
Nathan looked at him.
“What?”
Ethan pointed.
“This person…”
His face changed.
“Has been working for Harrington Global for twenty years.”
Nathan stepped closer.
“Who?”
Ethan looked up.
And answered:
“Daniel Whitmore.”
The same man who had helped Nathan run the company.
The same man who claimed he was loyal.
The same man who had been beside the Harrington family for decades.
Nathan felt the pieces finally connecting.
Vanessa’s fake pregnancy.
Adrian Vale.
Charles Kensington.
His father’s secret.
Daniel’s betrayal.
Everything was connected.
But one question remained.
Why?
Why would Daniel destroy one family…
And help another woman destroy Nathan?
And the answer was waiting in a place Nathan never expected.
May you like
Inside his own company.
