CHAPTER 2

CHAPTER 2

The Woman Who Stole Her Name

The silence inside the Castillo mansion was so heavy that even the rain outside seemed to fade into the background.

No one dared to breathe.

The servants stood motionless, their heads lowered toward the polished marble floor. Every face reflected the same emotion—fear.

For three years, fear had ruled this house.

Not Alejandro Castillo.

Not the board of Castillo Corporation.

Not the family name.

Fear belonged to one woman.

Vivian Moretti.

She stood at the foot of the grand staircase with her usual elegance, one hand resting lightly on the crystal wine glass. The confident smile that had charmed politicians, investors, and socialites was still painted across her lips.

But Alejandro noticed something no one else did.

Her fingers were trembling.

Barely.

Almost imperceptibly.

Vivian was afraid.

For the first time in years, she had lost control.

Alejandro slowly stepped toward Elena.

Every step echoed through the mansion like a hammer striking stone.

He stopped only inches away from her.

She looked thinner than he remembered.

Her once radiant chestnut hair had lost its shine, tied back carelessly beneath a maid's scarf. The expensive jewelry she used to wear had been replaced by rough, reddened hands and cracked fingernails from endless labor.

The woman who once hosted charity galas beside him now stood barefoot on the cold marble floor, dressed in a faded servant's uniform.

His heart broke.

"Look at me," he whispered.

Elena hesitated.

Slowly...

She raised her eyes.

The moment their gazes met, Alejandro saw something he had never imagined.

Not hatred.

Not resentment.

Not relief.

She was terrified.

Not of him.

Of what might happen because he had found her.

A tear escaped before she could stop it.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

Alejandro frowned.

"Sorry?"

"I couldn't come back."

Those six words shattered what remained of his composure.

"You think you owe me an apology?"

Her lips trembled.

"I failed you."

Alejandro gently reached for her hands.

She instinctively pulled away.

The movement was automatic.

Like someone who had learned that every touch would bring pain.

His chest tightened.

Whoever had done this had not only imprisoned Elena.

They had broken her spirit.

Behind them, Vivian let out a soft laugh.

"How touching."

Alejandro didn't even look at her.

"You should leave."

Vivian smiled.

"I don't take orders from strangers."

Only then did Alejandro turn.

His eyes had changed.

There was no grief left in them.

Only cold determination.

"A stranger?"

His voice echoed across the hall.

"This is my home."

Vivian folded her arms.

"Is it?"

She took another slow sip of wine.

"You've been away more than you've lived here these last three years."

She smiled sweetly.

"I've been the one managing everything."

The statement wasn't entirely false.

After Elena disappeared, Alejandro had buried himself in work and in the search for his wife. He traveled across countries chasing leads that always ended in disappointment.

While he searched the world...

Vivian had quietly taken control of his home.

His staff.

His routines.

Even his trust.

"I wonder," Vivian continued, "how your employees will react when they learn you've mistaken a servant for your missing wife."

Several servants flinched.

One elderly maid quietly began crying.

Alejandro noticed.

"So they know."

Vivian's smile faded.

"What?"

"They know exactly who she is."

The elderly maid suddenly fell to her knees.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Castillo..."

Tears streamed down her face.

"We wanted to tell you."

Vivian's expression hardened instantly.

The old woman continued sobbing.

"She threatened our families."

Another servant stepped forward.

Then another.

One by one, nearly every employee lowered themselves to the floor.

"We're sorry."

"We were afraid."

"She said she'd destroy us."

Elena immediately shook her head.

"No... Please don't blame them."

Alejandro looked around the hall.

Dozens of loyal employees.

All terrified.

This wasn't simply manipulation.

It was systematic control.

Vivian clapped slowly.

"Wonderful."

She laughed.

"So dramatic."

She walked gracefully down the last step of the staircase.

"I suppose now everyone suddenly remembers the truth?"

Her eyes swept across the servants.

"Interesting timing."

No one answered.

They couldn't.

Even now...

They feared her.

Alejandro's phone vibrated.

He answered without taking his eyes off Vivian.

"Yes."

His chief legal officer spoke urgently.

"Mr. Castillo, we've completed the emergency freeze."

"Report."

"Every personal account registered under Vivian Moretti has been locked."

Vivian's smile disappeared.

The lawyer continued.

"There is something else."

"What?"

"We discovered twelve shell companies established over the last three years."

Alejandro narrowed his eyes.

"Continue."

"They all received transfers from accounts linked to Castillo Estate."

His grip tightened around the phone.

"How much?"

"Approximately eighteen million dollars."

The room erupted in whispers.

Vivian's calm mask cracked.

Only for a second.

But Alejandro saw it.

"So," he said quietly.

"You've been stealing from me while imprisoning my wife."

Vivian lifted her chin.

"You have no proof."

Alejandro smiled.

Neither warm nor kind.

"The investigation began less than twenty minutes ago."

He slipped the phone into his pocket.

"And you're already worried."

"Elena."

She looked at him cautiously.

"I need you to answer one question."

She nodded faintly.

"Were you ever allowed to leave this property?"

Silence.

Finally...

She whispered,

"Only with guards."

The room froze.

"You mean..."

"They called them security escorts."

She swallowed painfully.

"But they weren't protecting me."

"They were making sure I never escaped."

Alejandro felt rage surge through him.

"Who ordered them?"

She slowly turned toward Vivian.

No words were needed.

Vivian sighed dramatically.

"This has gone far enough."

She reached into her handbag.

Several guards instinctively tensed.

Instead of a weapon, she removed a small silver key.

She twirled it between her fingers.

"You want answers?"

She smiled.

"Then you'll need this."

Alejandro extended his hand.

She didn't move.

Instead...

She dropped the key onto the marble floor.

It landed with a sharp metallic click.

"There's a room beneath this mansion."

Every servant looked shocked.

"No one knows it exists."

She looked directly at Elena.

"Except her."

Elena's face lost all color.

"No..."

Vivian smiled wider.

"Tell him."

Elena shook her head desperately.

"No..."

"Tell your husband what happened down there."

Tears spilled down Elena's cheeks.

"I can't."

Vivian laughed.

"Of course you can't."

She looked at Alejandro.

"Because if she tells you..."

"...you'll never forgive yourself."

Those words echoed through the mansion.

Alejandro slowly bent down and picked up the silver key.

It felt unusually heavy.

On one side was engraved a single symbol.

A black rose.

His expression darkened.

He had seen that symbol before.

Years ago.

In an anonymous letter warning him that someone close to him intended to destroy everything he loved.

He had dismissed it as a cruel prank.

Now...

The same symbol was resting in his hand.

Vivian turned toward the front entrance.

Two security officers stepped into her path.

"You are not leaving," Alejandro said.

She smiled without looking back.

"Oh, Alejandro."

"You still think this is about me."

She finally turned.

Her eyes were filled with a confidence that made everyone uneasy.

"I'm only one piece of the game."

The smile returned.

"And you've just awakened the people who spent three years making sure Elena disappeared."

Before anyone could react—

A deafening explosion shook the entire mansion.

The lights flickered violently.

Glass shattered across the grand hall.

Servants screamed.

Smoke poured in from the west wing.

One of Alejandro's guards ran inside, covered in dust.

"Mr. Castillo!"

"What happened?"

"The archives..."

He struggled to catch his breath.

"...someone planted explosives."

Alejandro's blood ran cold.

"The evidence..."

The guard looked up.

"It's burning."

As alarms echoed through the Castillo estate, Alejandro realized one horrifying truth.

The conspiracy had not ended tonight.

It had only just begun.
