CHAPTER 3

The Secret Room Beneath the Mansion

The explosion echoed through the Castillo estate like the roar of a collapsing mountain.

Crystal chandeliers swayed violently.

Fragments of stained glass rained onto the marble floor.

Smoke rolled through the west wing, swallowing the elegant hallways in thick gray clouds.

The servants screamed and scattered.

Security officers rushed toward the flames.

But Alejandro Castillo didn't move.

His eyes remained fixed on the silver key resting in his palm.

The black rose engraved upon it.

The same symbol from the anonymous warning letter he had received four years earlier.

At the time, he had dismissed it as the work of an obsessed rival.

Now he understood.

Someone had tried to warn him.

And he had ignored it.

"Seal every exit!" Alejandro ordered.

"No one leaves this property."

His head of security immediately barked commands into his radio.

Within seconds, armed guards surrounded the estate.

Meanwhile, firefighters stationed on the property raced toward the burning archive room.

A young investigator hurried over.

"Mr. Castillo!"

Alejandro turned.

"The fire wasn't an accident."

"What did you find?"

"The explosion started inside the document vault."

Alejandro's expression hardened.

"The vault?"

"Yes, sir."

"The blast was designed to destroy records."

Not the mansion.

The evidence.

Whoever orchestrated the explosion knew Alejandro had started uncovering the truth.

They were already trying to erase it.

Elena suddenly grabbed Alejandro's arm.

Her grip was weak.

But urgent.

"You can't go down there."

He looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

"The room beneath the mansion..."

Her voice trembled.

"It's where Vivian kept the things she never wanted anyone to see."

Alejandro gently held her hands.

"What things?"

She closed her eyes.

"I only saw it once."

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"I wish I never had."

Three years earlier...

Elena had awakened after another day of exhausting work.

Two guards entered her small servant's room without a word.

One of them covered her eyes.

The other tied her wrists.

She remembered asking where they were taking her.

No one answered.

She counted every step.

Forty-two down the servant staircase.

A long corridor.

Another staircase.

Cold air.

Then silence.

When the blindfold was removed...

She found herself in a stone chamber beneath the mansion.

There were no windows.

Only concrete walls.

A steel table.

Several filing cabinets.

And Vivian.

Smiling.

"You've been wondering why Alejandro can't find you."

Vivian walked around the room slowly.

"I suppose it's time you understood."

She opened one cabinet.

Inside were passports.

Birth certificates.

Marriage licenses.

Medical records.

Every document bearing Elena's name.

Except...

None of them belonged to Elena anymore.

Every photograph had been replaced with Vivian's face.

Every signature forged.

Every official seal duplicated perfectly.

Vivian held up one passport.

"Look carefully."

Elena stared in horror.

"My name..."

"Yes."

Vivian smiled.

"But my face."

Then Vivian leaned close enough for Elena to hear her whisper.

"Soon no one will remember you ever existed."

Present Day.

Alejandro listened without interrupting.

Every word felt like another knife twisting in his chest.

"You saw all that?"

Elena nodded.

"She wanted me to see."

"Why?"

"Because she enjoyed watching me lose hope."

The fire had finally been contained.

Smoke still drifted through the western corridor.

An investigator approached.

"We managed to save part of the archive."

Alejandro nodded.

"Good."

"But that's not all."

"What?"

"We found something hidden beneath the collapsed floor."

Within minutes, Alejandro, Elena, and several investigators stood inside the damaged archive room.

The explosion had shattered the wooden floorboards.

Beneath them...

A thick steel hatch had been exposed.

Alejandro looked toward Elena.

She immediately stepped backward.

"This is it."

He knelt beside the hatch.

The lock matched the silver key.

His heartbeat slowed.

For three years he had searched the world.

The answers had been beneath his own home.

He inserted the key.

A loud metallic click echoed through the room.

The hatch slowly opened.

Cold air rushed upward.

The smell of damp stone filled the room.

Flashlights illuminated a narrow spiral staircase descending into darkness.

No one spoke.

Alejandro took the first step.

The underground corridor stretched farther than anyone expected.

The walls were reinforced with concrete.

Electrical wiring ran overhead.

This wasn't an old cellar.

It had been renovated.

Deliberately.

Recently.

Someone had invested millions creating it.

Security cameras still lined the ceiling.

One technician removed the memory cards before they could be destroyed.

"They're still intact."

Alejandro nodded.

"Take everything."

The corridor finally opened into a massive underground chamber.

Everyone stopped.

The room looked less like a prison...

And more like a command center.

One wall was covered with maps.

Another displayed hundreds of photographs.

Every photograph featured Elena.

Shopping.

Driving.

Reading.

Walking in the garden.

Sleeping.

Even crying.

Thousands of moments.

Every day of her life had been documented long before she disappeared.

One investigator whispered,

"My God..."

Alejandro slowly walked closer.

The earliest photograph had been taken almost five years ago.

Someone had begun watching Elena long before the kidnapping.

This wasn't revenge.

It was obsession.

A second wall displayed Alejandro's daily schedule.

Business meetings.

Flight numbers.

Hotel reservations.

Private dinners.

Charity events.

Every movement.

Every hour.

Every detail.

Someone had been watching him too.

His security chief frowned.

"Only a handful of people had access to this information."

Alejandro didn't answer.

Because he already knew.

There had been a traitor inside Castillo Corporation from the beginning.

Then Elena froze.

"There..."

She pointed toward the far corner.

An old wooden rocking chair sat beneath a dim light.

Beside it...

A small pink teddy bear.

Alejandro stared.

His face lost all color.

He slowly picked it up.

Around the bear's neck was a faded ribbon embroidered with one name.

Sofia.

Elena covered her mouth.

"No..."

Alejandro whispered,

"It can't be."

Years ago...

Before the world knew Alejandro Castillo as a billionaire...

He and Elena had dreamed of starting a family.

When Elena became pregnant, they had already chosen a name.

If it was a girl...

They would call her Sofia.

But Elena had miscarried during the third month.

Or so they had been told.

Neither of them had ever spoken about it again.

Now...

The teddy bear lay hidden inside a secret room beneath their mansion.

As if someone wanted them to remember.

Or question everything they believed.

Alejandro looked inside the toy.

Something rattled.

He carefully opened the stitching.

A tiny silver flash drive fell into his hand.

One of the forensic technicians immediately connected it to a laptop.

A single video appeared.

The timestamp was dated...

Three years and four months earlier.

Before Elena's disappearance.

The video showed a private office inside Castillo Corporation.

Alejandro himself was on screen, speaking with his chief financial officer.

Then the office door opened.

Vivian entered.

She wasn't alone.

Standing beside her was someone whose face had remained hidden beneath a hood.

The mysterious figure placed a thick folder on Alejandro's desk.

Alejandro frowned.

"I've never seen this meeting before."

The recording had no audio.

Only images.

Then the hooded figure removed one glove.

A distinctive signet ring gleamed beneath the office lights.

Alejandro's breathing stopped.

He recognized it instantly.

Only members of one family in the entire country wore that ring.

The De Luca family.

His oldest business allies.

And his oldest enemies.

The camera suddenly glitched.

The screen went black.

One sentence appeared in white letters.

"Trust no one wearing the Castillo name."

The room fell silent.

Alejandro slowly looked around at everyone present.

His own family.

His executives.

His household staff.

For the first time since finding Elena...

He realized the nightmare wasn't over.

Because the conspiracy had never been about Vivian alone.

Someone inside the Castillo bloodline had helped orchestrate it.

And if that message was true...

The next traitor was still living under his roof.
