CHAPTER 7

CHAPTER 7
The Hidden Witness
A heavy silence settled over the nursery after the anonymous watcher vanished into the forest.
Alejandro still held the tiny silver bracelet in his trembling hand.
Baby Sofia.
The name echoed in his mind like a heartbeat he had only just discovered.
For years, he had believed he had lost two things—his wife and his unborn child.
Now both truths had been shattered.
Elena was alive.
And somewhere in the darkness, there was a possibility—however small—that Sofia had never died.
But Alejandro forced himself to remain calm.
He had spent years chasing hope that turned into dead ends.
He would not allow emotion to cloud his judgment again.
Not this time.
Within the hour, Castillo Estate had become a fortress.
Additional security teams surrounded the property.
Every road leading to the mansion was monitored.
The underground chamber had been sealed as a crime scene.
Meanwhile, forensic specialists catalogued every document, photograph, and electronic device recovered from the secret rooms.
Eduardo entered Alejandro's study carrying another file.
"Sir..."
Alejandro looked up.
"What is it?"
"The police have identified the man we detained near the eastern forest."
"The watcher?"
Eduardo nodded.
"He refuses to speak."
"Except for one sentence."
"What did he say?"
"He keeps asking for Elena."
Alejandro and Elena entered the estate's security office together.
The detained man sat behind reinforced glass.
He appeared to be in his late sixties.
His gray beard was unkempt.
His clothes were worn and muddy.
At first glance, he looked like an ordinary drifter.
Yet his eyes were remarkably calm.
When he saw Elena, they filled with tears.
"You survived..."
Elena frowned.
"Do I know you?"
The old man slowly stood.
"You were never meant to remember me."
Alejandro stepped forward.
"Who are you?"
The man answered without hesitation.
"My name is Samuel Ortega."
"I used to work for the Castillo family."
Eduardo's eyes widened.
"No..."
"It can't be."
Alejandro looked between them.
"You know him?"
Eduardo nodded slowly.
"Samuel was the estate groundskeeper."
"He disappeared twenty years ago."
Samuel smiled bitterly.
"No."
"I was made to disappear."
Alejandro ordered the restraints removed.
The old man accepted a glass of water before speaking.
"I've waited twenty years for someone to uncover the truth."
"What truth?" Alejandro asked.
Samuel looked directly at Elena.
"The night your daughter was born..."
"I was there."
The room fell silent.
Elena's breathing became uneven.
Alejandro felt the air leave his lungs.
Samuel continued.
"I wasn't supposed to be."
"I had been repairing the greenhouse after a storm."
"While crossing the rear courtyard..."
"I saw three black vehicles arrive."
"They carried no license plates."
"Were they Black Rose?" Alejandro asked.
Samuel nodded.
"I didn't know their name back then."
"But I remember the symbol."
"The black rose."
He closed his eyes, forcing himself to relive the memory.
"Your mother-in-law was arguing with someone."
"A woman."
"Tall."
"Elegant."
"She kept insisting there wasn't enough time."
"I couldn't hear every word."
"But I heard one sentence clearly."
Samuel's voice dropped.
"'The child must disappear before sunrise.'"
Elena gasped.
"No..."
Samuel nodded.
"I watched one of the women leave the nursery carrying a baby."
Wrapped in a white blanket.
"The baby was crying."
Alejandro gripped the edge of the table.
"What happened next?"
"I followed them."
"As far as the old chapel."
"There..."
"They handed the baby to a man wearing black gloves."
Samuel looked at Alejandro.
"He wore the Castillo family signet ring."
The room fell into stunned silence.
Another Castillo.
Another betrayal.
"I wanted to stop them."
Samuel looked down at his scarred hands.
"But someone struck me from behind."
"When I woke up..."
"I was in another country."
Alejandro frowned.
"What?"
"They didn't kill me."
"They paid people to keep me alive."
"Far away."
"Every few years..."
"They reminded me what would happen if I ever returned."
"What happened?"
Samuel's expression darkened.
"They showed me photographs."
"Of Elena."
"They knew exactly where she was."
"They said if I spoke..."
"She would die."
Elena quietly wiped away her tears.
"So why come back now?"
Samuel smiled sadly.
"Because yesterday..."
"I saw the news."
"They said Mrs. Castillo had returned."
"I realized..."
"They had failed."
Just then, the lead forensic analyst entered the room carrying a laptop.
"Mr. Castillo."
"We recovered deleted files from the underground server."
"Anything useful?"
The analyst nodded.
"Very."
He connected the laptop to the large monitor.
A grainy surveillance recording appeared.
The date shocked everyone.
Twenty-three years earlier.
The video quality was poor.
But one thing was unmistakable.
The underground chamber already existed.
Long before Vivian arrived.
Long before Elena disappeared.
The conspiracy was decades older than anyone imagined.
The recording showed several people gathered around a conference table.
Most of their faces were hidden.
One man stood at the head of the room.
His face remained in shadow.
Only his voice could be heard.
Distorted.
Cold.
"The Castillo fortune must never pass through Elena."
Another voice asked,
"And the child?"
The leader answered,
"If the child survives..."
"Our work will begin again."
The recording ended abruptly.
No names.
No faces.
Only one symbol burned onto the screen before it went black.
A black rose.
Alejandro slowly looked toward Samuel.
"Can you identify anyone?"
Samuel leaned closer.
His eyes widened.
"I know that voice."
Everyone turned.
"Who is it?"
Samuel hesitated.
"If I'm right..."
"It changes everything."
Alejandro stepped closer.
"Tell me."
Samuel swallowed hard.
"I heard that voice once before."
"At your father's funeral."
The room froze.
"My father's funeral?"
Samuel nodded.
"He wasn't standing with the guests."
"He was standing with your uncle."
Alejandro felt his heartbeat quicken.
"My uncle..."
Samuel closed his eyes.
"I never saw his face clearly."
"But I remember one thing."
"He called your uncle..."
'Director.'
The title sent a chill through everyone in the room.
Director.
Not boss.
Not chairman.
A position within an organization.
An organization that had manipulated the Castillo family for decades.
Alejandro suddenly realized Vivian, Gabriel—even the false identities—might all be pieces of a much larger machine.
Black Rose was not a single person.
It was a network.
And somewhere at its center...
A Director was still giving orders.
Before anyone could speak, alarms blared throughout the estate.
Red emergency lights flashed across the walls.
Alejandro reached for his phone.
His security chief answered immediately.
"Sir!"
"What happened?"
"The evidence vault has been breached."
"What?"
"The surveillance drives..."
"They're gone."
Alejandro's expression darkened.
"Who took them?"
The security chief hesitated.
"We don't know."
"There were no signs of forced entry."
"The thief used an executive access code."
Alejandro slowly lowered the phone.
Only a handful of people possessed executive clearance.
And every one of them...
Belonged to the Castillo family.
The betrayal wasn't over.
It was growing closer.
Closer than ever before.
