CHAPTER I – THE WORD HE NEVER HEARD

CHAPTER I – THE WORD HE NEVER HEARD
The boy’s voice trembled.
“My mom said you were her father.”
Silence crashed over the garden.
The laughter vanished.
The music seemed to stop.
Every guest stared at the old man in the black tuxedo.
His face had gone completely white.
The hospital photo shook in his hands.
The woman in the picture was unmistakable.
Emily.
His daughter.
The daughter he had not seen in fifteen years.
The daughter he had disowned.
The daughter he had told never to come back.
The boy lowered his eyes.
“She told me not to hate you.”
The words hit harder than any accusation.
The old man couldn't breathe.
Because he remembered the last thing he had said to Emily.
May you like
"If you walk away, don't ever come back."
And she hadn't.
