The guests watched as the wealthy man slowly rose from his chair.
For decades, he had controlled boardrooms, companies, and fortunes.
Yet now his hands were trembling.
“Where is she?” he asked.
The boy swallowed.
“At Saint Mary's Hospital.”
The old man's heart dropped.
“How sick?”
The boy hesitated.
Then quietly answered:
“The doctors say they don't know how much time she has left.”
The garden lights suddenly felt cruel.
The expensive dinner.
The crystal glasses.
The untouched food.
None of it mattered anymore.
The old man looked around at the guests who had laughed only minutes earlier.
Their faces were filled with discomfort now.
But he wasn't angry at them.
He was angry at himself.
