Chapter 2 – The Truth Behind the Door

Daniel Carter threw open the hallway doors and reached the balcony.

The blast of freezing air hit him first.

Then he saw his daughter.

Curled into a corner.

Crying.

Her lips had begun turning pale.

"Sophie!"

He pulled off his white dinner jacket and wrapped it around her trembling shoulders before lifting her into his arms.

"I'm here."

She buried her face against his neck.

"I thought you forgot me."

"I never would."

As he carried her inside, guests fell silent.

The bride, Victoria, sighed dramatically.

"There you are."

Daniel stared at her.

"What happened?"

Victoria shrugged.

"She wouldn't stop interrupting while I was getting ready."

"So?"

"I asked someone to let her calm down for a few minutes."

Sophie shook her head.

"You said if I cried again..."

She swallowed hard.

May you like

"...I'd stay outside until the wedding was over."

A murmur spread through the room.
