Victoria forced a smile.
"She's exaggerating."
Daniel looked down at Sophie.
"Did anyone else hear it?"
A bridesmaid slowly raised her hand.
"I did."
Another spoke up.
"I told Victoria it was too cold."
The wedding planner nodded quietly.
"I tried to unlock the door, but I was told not to interfere."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Every answer made the room feel smaller.
The officiant cleared his throat.
"We can delay the ceremony if—"
"There won't be a ceremony."
Daniel reached into his pocket.
He unfolded the handwritten vows he had spent weeks preparing.
Then, without taking his eyes off Victoria, he tore them neatly in half.
The pieces drifted onto the polished floor.
"I promised myself I'd only marry someone who loved my daughter as much as they loved me."
