The static didn’t fade.

It grew.

A harsh, crawling sound filled the chapel, forcing everyone to flinch as the speakers above the pews cracked to life like something waking up angry.

David’s confident posture shifted for the first time.

Not fear.

Annoyance.

“What is this?” he snapped, looking toward the ceiling.

Jessica tightened her grip on his arm, but her smile was already gone.

Eleanor didn’t move.

She simply lifted her gaze to the altar, where her daughter’s casket rested beneath white lilies that suddenly looked too clean for the truth that had just been spoken.

The red light on her mourning ribbon blinked again.
