Chapter 1: The First Name

The church became so quiet that the rustle of paper sounded thunderous.

Evan's smug smile remained in place for exactly two seconds.

Then Mr. Halden continued reading.

"To my mother, Margaret Ellis, I leave full authority over my estate, my personal accounts, my business holdings, and all assets placed in trust for my unborn child."

A murmur swept through the pews.

Evan blinked.

"What?"

Mr. Halden didn't look up.

"All decisions regarding inheritance shall remain solely under Margaret Ellis until further legal review concerning the circumstances surrounding my death."

This time, the whispering grew louder.

Celeste's fingers loosened on Evan's arm.

Evan stepped forward.

"This is ridiculous."

The lawyer calmly removed another document.

"No, Mr. Vale. What's ridiculous is assuming you were the beneficiary."

His face drained of color.

Emma had been wealthy long before she met him.

Most people never knew it.

She owned a successful software company she had inherited and expanded herself. She had investment portfolios, real estate holdings, and a life insurance policy worth millions.

For years, Evan acted as though everything she owned would automatically become his.

Apparently, so had Celeste.

Both were discovering otherwise.

Mr. Halden adjusted his glasses.

"There is also a personal letter."

I felt my breath catch.

Emma's handwriting stared back from the page.

The same handwriting that used to leave notes on my refrigerator.

The same handwriting that would never write another word.

The lawyer unfolded the letter.

And began to read.

May you like

"If this letter is being read, then something happened before I could protect my child."

Every head in the church lifted.
