Chapter 2: My Daughter's Voice

Chapter 2: My Daughter's Voice

The words belonged to Emma.

Not the version lying silently in the coffin.

The real Emma.

Strong.

Thoughtful.

Careful.

"I have spent the last eight months documenting concerns about my marriage."

Evan froze.

Celeste visibly stepped back.

Mr. Halden continued.

"I did not share these concerns publicly because I hoped I was wrong. I hoped stress, pregnancy, and fear were clouding my judgment."

The church was utterly silent.

But then came the next sentence.

"If my death appears accidental, I request that all records stored in Safety Deposit Box 117 be released immediately."

A collective gasp echoed through the room.

Evan's face had become almost gray.

I stared at him.

For the first time, I wasn't looking at a grieving husband.

I was looking at a frightened man.

Mr. Halden opened a second folder.

"Contained within that box are financial records, emails, recorded conversations, surveillance reports, and private investigator findings."

The room erupted.

"What reports?" someone whispered.

"What investigator?" another person asked.

Evan lunged forward.

"You can't read this!"

Two men near the front stood immediately.

Former police officers.

Friends of my late husband.

They blocked his path without saying a word.

Mr. Halden continued.

"Evidence suggests Mr. Evan Vale maintained a long-term extramarital relationship with Celeste Harper while attempting to gain control of assets intended for our child."

Celeste looked as though she might faint.

The reporters outside had not yet heard any of this.

But they would.

Very soon.

And then came the sentence that shattered everything.

"Should my death be deemed suspicious, I request a full independent investigation."

Evan stopped breathing for a moment.

May you like

Because suddenly this was no longer about money.

It was about murder.
