Chapter 2 – The Footage Nobody Wanted to See

Chapter 2 – The Footage Nobody Wanted to See
The ambulance doors slammed shut.
Sophie lay on the stretcher, her small face pale beneath the emergency lights. A white bandage wrapped around her head, but it couldn't hide the fear in her eyes.
"Evelyn..."
She reached for my hand.
"I really didn't take it."
"I know, sweetheart," I whispered.
"I've always known."
Behind us, the wedding continued.
Music started again.
Champagne flowed.
As if an eight-year-old girl hadn't just left the ballroom covered in blood.
Thirty minutes later, two Chicago police officers arrived at the hospital.
Officer Daniel Brooks spoke gently.
"Mrs. Carter, the hotel manager informed us there may be security footage."
I looked up.
"The ballroom has cameras?"
He nodded.
"Three."
My brother had forgotten one thing.
Luxury hotels never forget their security systems.
Back at the Whitmore Hotel...
The celebration had become uncomfortable.
Guests whispered.
Some had already left.
Others stared at Preston every time he smiled.
The hotel security manager inserted a flash drive into the computer.
Everyone gathered around the monitor.
Preston folded his arms confidently.
"This will prove I caught the thief."
The video began.
Wide angle.
Crystal chandeliers.
Guests talking.
Children laughing.
Then...
The camera zoomed digitally toward our table.
Sophie never left her seat.
Never once.
For twenty-seven straight minutes.
Silence.
The manager switched to Camera Two.
A perfect angle of the head table.
There was Preston.
Laughing with friends.
Holding his phone.
Still holding it...
Five minutes after he claimed it had disappeared.
The room became very quiet.
Then another angle appeared.
Camera Three.
Preston walked toward our table.
He stopped behind Sophie's chair.
Looked around.
Reached into his own jacket pocket.
Pulled out the titanium phone.
Slipped it into Sophie's denim jacket.
Less than two seconds.
Smooth.
Practiced.
Deliberate.
Gasps echoed across the room.
Someone whispered,
"My God..."
The bride covered her mouth.
My mother turned white.
My father stared at the screen without blinking.
The footage kept playing.
Preston dramatically searched the room.
Reached into Sophie's pocket.
"Found" the phone.
Exactly as planned.
Except one thing.
The cameras never lied.
Then came the final recording.
Everyone watched Preston rip the heavy oak menu board from its stand.
Swing it.
Strike an eight-year-old child.
No accident.
No self-defense.
A full-force attack.
The ballroom fell completely silent.
For the first time in his life...
The golden child had nowhere left to hide.
Officer Brooks looked directly at Preston.
"Sir..."
"You're under arrest."
Handcuffs clicked around his wrists.
The same guests who had applauded him only an hour earlier now stepped away.
No one defended him.
Not even his parents.
