Chapter 3 – When the Family Finally Brokec

Chapter 3 – When the Family Finally Broke
News travels faster than shame.
By sunrise, the surveillance footage had spread across every local news station.
"A Groom Arrested After Framing Child at Wedding."
Millions watched.
Millions judged.
And for the first time...
It wasn't me.
It wasn't Sophie.
It was Preston.
His employer terminated him within forty-eight hours.
His bride filed for an annulment before the honeymoon tickets were even used.
Sponsors withdrew.
Friends disappeared.
The phone stopped ringing.
Except mine.
Mother called first.
"Evelyn..."
"You have to help your brother."
I almost laughed.
Help him?
Where had that compassion been when Sophie was bleeding?
"You chose him," I answered quietly.
"You chose him every single time."
Then I hung up.
Father came to the hospital that evening.
He stood outside Sophie's room.
Looking older than I had ever seen him.
"I failed you."
Those three words were thirty years late.
But they were real.
"I thought protecting Preston was protecting our family."
I shook my head.
"No."
"You were protecting a lie."
He cried.
The first tears I had ever seen from him.
But some damage cannot be repaired simply because regret finally arrives.
Meanwhile...
The prosecutor reviewed the footage.
Charges multiplied.
False accusation.
Evidence tampering.
Felony child abuse.
Assault.
Witness intimidation.
Every lie Preston had built collapsed beneath a single security camera.
Sophie recovered slowly.
The stitches healed.
The nightmares did not.
One afternoon she asked me,
"Mommy..."
"Why did Uncle Preston hate me?"
I held her tightly.
"He didn't hate you."
"He hated that someone could tell the truth."
She looked confused.
May you like

Until adults teach them what cruelty looks like.
