Chapter 1: Three Seconds

Chapter 1: Three Seconds

The grand concert hall was filled to capacity.

Every seat was occupied.

Every balcony crowded.

Thousands had come to witness the final performance of the legendary pianist, Adrian Laurent.

For decades, he had been celebrated as the greatest pianist in the world.

But tonight was different.

Because Adrian was hiding a secret.

His right hand was failing.

Years of nerve damage had left two fingers nearly useless.

Doctors across three continents had tried everything.

Nothing worked.

Many believed this concert would be his farewell.

Backstage, Adrian sat alone, staring at his motionless fingers.

Then a voice interrupted him.

"I can fix it."

He looked up.

A little girl stood in the doorway.

She couldn't have been older than ten.

Her dress was worn.

Her shoes were covered in mud.

Her dark hair hung in messy curls.

Adrian almost laughed.

Security had somehow allowed a homeless child backstage.

"You can fix it?" he asked.

The girl nodded.

"Yes."

Several stage assistants chuckled.

One whispered, "This should be good."

Adrian shook his head.

"Doctors couldn't help me."

The girl stepped closer.

"That's because they were looking at your hand."

The room grew quiet.

"And what should they have been looking at?" Adrian asked.

She smiled.

"Your heart."

The assistants exchanged confused glances.

Adrian sighed.

"Fine."

He extended his injured hand.

The little girl gently placed both of her small hands around it.

Then she whispered:

"One."

Silence.

"Two."

The pianist felt warmth spread through his wrist.

"Three."

She released him.

The room waited.

Adrian rolled his eyes and prepared to make a sarcastic comment.

Then his fingers moved.

All five of them.

Perfectly.

Smoothly.

Effortlessly.

His smile disappeared.

The assistants gasped.

One dropped a clipboard.

Adrian stared at his hand in disbelief.

May you like

For the first time in seven years...

There was no pain.
