Chapter 2 – The Christmas Table

Chapter 2 – The Christmas Table
Alejandro wrapped his suit jacket around Sofía's shoulders.
She was trembling.
Not from fear alone.
From the cold.
He walked to the kitchen and opened the refrigerator.
Nearly every shelf was filled.
Imported cheeses.
Fresh fruit.
Premium steaks.
Luxury desserts.
Champagne.
Caviar.
Enough food to host another Christmas party.
Yet his daughters had been given moldy bread.
He stood motionless for several seconds.
Then he quietly prepared four warm bowls of soup, toasted fresh bread, and poured hot chocolate into small Christmas mugs he remembered buying years earlier.
The girls stared at the food as if they needed permission.
"You don't have to ask," Alejandro whispered.
"This is your home."
Camila picked up the spoon with shaking hands.
"Daddy..."
"Can we really eat all of it?"
May you like
His heart broke.
"As much as you want."
