Chapter 1: The Lie That Survived Twenty-Six Years

The kitchen fell into complete silence.

Only the soft hiss of boiling sugar broke the stillness.

Emily stood frozen, one trembling hand against her burning cheek.

Daniel Sterling never looked away from the scar beneath her ear.

He had seen that sketch only once.

Hidden inside his late father's confidential investigation file.

A crescent-shaped burn.

Caused by a collapsing brass chandelier during the nursery fire twenty-six years earlier.

No newspaper had ever published that detail.

No police report released it.

Only someone inside the family could have known.

Daniel slowly turned toward his mother.

"Tell me the truth."

Victoria Sterling's elegant composure cracked.

"Daniel... not here."

"Here is exactly where it happens."

The kitchen staff exchanged uneasy glances.

The mansion's executive chef quietly locked the swinging doors, preventing anyone from entering.

Victoria forced a smile.

"She's manipulating you."

Emily shook her head.

"I don't even know what you're talking about."

Daniel looked back at Emily.

"The woman who raised you..."

"Rose."

"Did she ever tell you anything else?"

Emily swallowed.

"Only that she found me wrapped in a burned blanket outside a mansion."

"She always cried whenever I asked about my parents."

Victoria suddenly shouted.

"Enough!"

Everyone jumped.

"You don't know what that woman did!"

Daniel narrowed his eyes.

"No."

May you like

"I don't."

"And that's exactly why you're going to tell me."
