Chapter 14 — The Last Key

Chapter 14 — The Last Key
The headlights disappeared.
For several seconds, the abandoned warehouse was completely dark.
Ethan stood beside Daniel outside the building, staring at the locked steel door.
Neither man spoke.
The message had been simple:
COME ALONE.
But Ethan had not come alone.
Daniel was beside him.
Michael was waiting in a second vehicle across the street.
And Clara had stayed behind with the dealership's investigators, monitoring every financial account connected to the Whitmore family.
They had prepared for an ambush.
What they had not prepared for was the truth.
Ethan reached for the door.
Daniel caught his wrist.
"Wait."
"Thomas is inside."
"I know."
"We can't leave him there."
"We won't."
Daniel looked at the building.
"But remember what we learned."
Ethan nodded.
"Anna."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"She isn't trying to kill us."
"Then what does she want?"
Daniel stared through the darkness.
"Revenge."
The door opened before Ethan touched it.
A man's voice came from inside.
"Come in."
Ethan stepped forward.
Daniel followed.
A light flickered overhead.
The warehouse was enormous.
Old delivery vehicles sat beneath dusty covers.
Stacks of abandoned equipment lined the walls.
At the center of the room was a wooden table.
And sitting behind it was Anna.
Samuel stood beside her.
Thomas was nowhere to be seen.
Ethan stopped.
"Where's my brother?"
Anna smiled.
"Always business first."
"Where is he?"
"Safe."
"Prove it."
Anna nodded toward a monitor.
The screen turned on.
Thomas appeared.
He was sitting in another room.
Alive.
Uninjured.
Ethan exhaled.
Daniel stepped forward.
"Let him go."
Anna looked at him.
"You always were impatient, Daniel."
Daniel froze.
"You know me."
"I knew you before you became the man everyone feared."
She smiled.
"Before the dealership."
"Before the money."
"Before the lies."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"You helped Edward."
Anna's smile disappeared.
"No."
"I trusted him."
"You trusted the wrong person."
Ethan looked at Samuel.
"You worked for her."
Samuel lowered his eyes.
"Yes."
"For twenty years?"
"Not exactly."
"Then what?"
Samuel looked at Anna.
She answered for him.
"Samuel worked for your grandfather."
Ethan frowned.
"And you?"
"I worked for myself."
She stood.
"That's the difference."
Anna walked toward a metal cabinet.
She unlocked it.
Inside was a small wooden box.
She carried it to the table.
Then placed it in front of Ethan.
"This is what you came for."
Ethan stared at the box.
"What is it?"
"The last piece."
Daniel stepped closer.
"What last piece?"
Anna looked at him.
"The one your father spent twenty years trying to destroy."
She opened the box.
Inside was a small brass key.
Nothing else.
Ethan frowned.
"That's it?"
Anna smiled.
"That's the key."
"To what?"
"That is the question."
She pushed the key toward him.
"Twenty years ago, after the accident, Daniel believed the only evidence was the ledger."
Daniel nodded.
"It wasn't."
"The ledger showed where the money went."
Anna looked at Ethan.
"But the key shows why."
Ethan picked it up.
The brass was old.
A tiny number had been engraved on it.
417.
Daniel stared.
"Locker 417."
Michael entered the warehouse.
Everyone turned.
Daniel looked surprised.
"You knew?"
Michael shook his head.
"No."
He looked at the key.
"But I know where it is."
They drove to the old railway station.
The station had been closed for nearly fifteen years.
Its brick walls were covered in graffiti.
Most of the windows were broken.
Only one section remained locked.
The storage lockers.
Daniel walked slowly down the corridor.
Ethan followed.
Locker 417 stood at the end.
The key fit perfectly.
Ethan turned it.
Click.
The door opened.
Inside was a black metal case.
Daniel stared.
"My God."
Ethan pulled it out.
There was no lock.
Only a label.
D. WHITMORE — IF I DISAPPEAR.
Ethan looked at his father.
"You made this?"
Daniel nodded.
"I don't remember."
"You were unconscious after the accident."
Michael answered.
"You made it before."
Daniel slowly shook his head.
"I don't remember."
Ethan opened the case.
Inside were photographs.
Bank statements.
A cassette tape.
A handwritten letter.
And a second key.
This one was smaller.
Silver.
Engraved with a single letter.
V.
Victoria.
Daniel picked up the letter.
His hands trembled.
He read it silently.
Then his face changed.
"What?"
Ethan asked.
Daniel handed him the letter.
Ethan read:
If you're reading this, the accident was not an accident.
But the person who ordered it isn't the person you think.
Edward did not make the final decision.
Victoria did.
And she did it because someone had threatened the child.
Ethan looked up.
"Mom?"
Daniel stared at the letter.
"No."
"Then who?"
Daniel continued reading.
The final sentence was underlined.
Ask Victoria what happened to the key.
They returned to the dealership before dawn.
Victoria was waiting.
She looked exhausted.
When she saw the silver key in Ethan's hand, her face went white.
"Where did you get that?"
Ethan stepped toward her.
"The station."
Victoria shook her head.
"No."
"What does it open?"
"Nothing."
"You recognize it."
"No."
"Mom."
She closed her eyes.
"Where did you find it?"
"Locker 417."
Victoria sat down.
For a long moment, she didn't speak.
Then she whispered:
"The hospital."
Daniel stared at her.
"What hospital?"
"The one where you were taken after the accident."
Daniel's expression changed.
"You told me I was transferred."
"I lied."
"Why?"
"Because your father was looking for you."
Daniel stepped closer.
"And the key?"
Victoria looked at Ethan.
"It opens the room where the accident was planned."
Silence.
They arrived at the abandoned hospital just after sunrise.
The building had been closed for years.
The emergency entrance was boarded up.
The walls smelled of dust and disinfectant.
Victoria led them through the old corridors.
She stopped outside a steel door.
There was no number.
Only a small keyhole.
She handed Ethan the silver key.
"You open it."
"Why me?"
"Because the person who left the evidence wanted you to find it."
Ethan inserted the key.
The lock turned.
The door opened.
Inside was a tiny room.
A desk.
A broken telephone.
A filing cabinet.
And a tape recorder.
On the wall was a photograph.
Daniel.
Victoria.
Edward.
Samuel.
Richard.
And another person.
Ethan stared.
"Who is that?"
Daniel stepped closer.
His face went pale.
"Anna's husband."
Michael whispered:
"Jonathan."
Ethan looked at the photograph.
"Who was he?"
Victoria answered.
"Your mother's first husband."
Daniel stared at her.
"You were married before me?"
Victoria shook her head.
"Not legally."
"Then what?"
"A contract."
Ethan frowned.
"Explain."
Victoria took a breath.
"Jonathan was connected to the people who financed your grandfather."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Organized crime."
Victoria nodded.
"Yes."
The tape recorder clicked.
Everyone turned.
It had started automatically.
A man's voice filled the room.
Edward.
Twenty years younger.
"If you're hearing this, the accident has already happened."
Daniel froze.
Edward continued.
"I made a mistake."
A pause.
"I thought I could control them."
Another pause.
"I was wrong."
The recording continued.
"Jonathan wants the dealership."
"Richard wants the money."
"Samuel wants power."
"And Victoria..."
Edward's voice cracked.
"...Victoria wants her son."
Ethan looked at his mother.
The recording continued.
"But none of them understand the real problem."
Static.
Then:
"Daniel discovered the account."
Another voice entered.
Victoria.
"I know."
Edward:
"Then he'll expose everything."
Victoria:
"I won't let him."
Daniel stared at the recorder.
His wife had known.
She had planned something.
But then Victoria's younger voice said:
"Not because I want him dead."
Edward:
"Then what?"
Victoria:
"I want him gone."
Daniel whispered:
"I left because of her."
Ethan shook his head.
"No."
The recording continued.
Victoria:
"If Daniel disappears, the family survives."
Edward:
"And the child?"
Victoria:
"I'll take care of Ethan."
Edward:
"And Thomas?"
Silence.
Then Victoria whispered:
"Thomas stays with me."
Daniel suddenly stopped breathing.
Ethan looked at him.
"Thomas."
The recording continued.
Edward:
"Anna wants the child."
Victoria:
"She can't have him."
Edward:
"Then what will you do?"
Victoria:
"I'll make everyone believe Thomas died."
The tape stopped.
Silence.
Ethan stared at his mother.
"You told everyone my brother was dead."
Victoria began crying.
"I was trying to protect him."
"You lied."
"Yes."
"You let me grow up believing he was dead."
"Yes."
"You let Dad believe you betrayed him."
"I did."
Daniel looked at her.
"Why?"
Victoria whispered:
"Because Anna had your son."
Everyone froze.
Ethan's voice dropped.
"What?"
Victoria looked at him.
"Thomas was born three days before the accident."
Daniel stared.
"That's impossible."
"No."
Victoria shook her head.
"Anna took him."
"Why?"
"Because she believed he belonged to her."
Ethan frowned.
"Why would she think that?"
Victoria looked at Daniel.
"Because Jonathan was Thomas's biological father."
Silence.
Daniel looked as though someone had struck him.
"No."
Victoria nodded.
"I lied about the pregnancy."
Ethan stepped backward.
"Thomas isn't Dad's son."
Victoria whispered:
"No."
Daniel sat down.
For twenty years, he had believed the accident destroyed his family.
But the truth was far worse.
The accident had been built around a secret.
And that secret was Thomas.
Suddenly, the hospital lights came on.
Everyone turned.
A voice came through the intercom.
"Very good."
Anna.
Ethan looked toward the hallway.
"You followed us."
Anna stepped into the doorway.
"Of course."
Daniel stood.
"You used us."
"I needed you to find the room."
"Why?"
"Because I couldn't enter."
"Why?"
Anna smiled sadly.
"Because the key only works for family."
Ethan looked at the silver key.
Then at Anna.
"You aren't family."
Anna shook her head.
"No."
She looked at Victoria.
"But she is."
Victoria froze.
Anna continued:
"She gave birth to Thomas."
Ethan's face went pale.
"And Jonathan?"
Anna smiled.
"Jonathan wasn't Thomas's father."
Daniel stared.
"Then who was?"
Anna looked directly at him.
"You."
Silence.
Ethan's heart stopped.
Anna continued.
"Jonathan was the man who helped hide the truth."
She turned toward Daniel.
"Thomas is your son."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Victoria began sobbing.
Ethan looked at his father.
Everything they had believed for twenty years had collapsed.
Then Anna spoke again.
"And now you understand why the accident happened."
Daniel looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because Edward discovered the truth."
"What truth?"
Anna's expression became cold.
"Thomas was the rightful heir."
Ethan stared.
"To what?"
Anna smiled.
"Not the dealership."
She pointed toward the black case.
"To everything."
The final document inside the case suddenly caught Ethan's attention.
He opened it.
It wasn't a business contract.
It was a birth certificate.
The father's name was:
Daniel Whitmore.
The mother's name:
Victoria Whitmore.
And beneath Thomas's name was a handwritten note.
Primary beneficiary of the Whitmore Family Trust.
Ethan looked up.
"The trust."
Daniel understood.
"Thomas was supposed to inherit everything."
Anna nodded.
"That's why they wanted him gone."
Ethan looked toward the hallway.
"Where is Thomas now?"
Anna smiled.
"Waiting."
"For what?"
"For you."
The lights went out.
A door slammed somewhere in the darkness.
Then Ethan heard a voice.
His brother.
"Ethan?"
He turned.
"Thomas!"
He ran toward the sound.
But before he reached the doorway, a gunshot echoed through the hospital.
Victoria screamed.
Daniel shouted his son's name.
And when the emergency lights returned...
Thomas was gone.
Only the silver key remained on the floor.
Beside it was a note.
Ethan picked it up.
Three words were written across the paper:
THE LAST KEY.
And beneath them:
THE FINAL TRUTH IS BURIED WHERE THE ACCIDENT BEGAN.
Daniel looked at the note.
"The dealership."
Ethan shook his head.
"No."
He pointed toward the window.
"Not the dealership."
Everyone looked outside.
Across the street stood the abandoned highway where Daniel's car had crashed twenty years ago.
May you like
The place where their family had been destroyed.
And where, apparently, the final secret was still waiting.
