Chapter 5 — The Black Ledger

Chapter 5 — The Black Ledger

The bullet had missed Richard Hale by less than three inches.

But the real damage had already been done.

The conference-room window was shattered.

Glass covered the carpet.

Security officers had sealed the hallway.

Clara was speaking urgently into her phone.

And Ethan stood frozen beside the table, staring at the message that had changed everything.

YOUR FATHER IS ALIVE.

He had read it seven times.

He still couldn't make himself believe it.

"My father is alive," he whispered.

Edward stood beside him.

"Maybe."

Ethan turned sharply.

"Maybe?"

"We don't know who sent the message."

"But they knew his name."

"That doesn't prove anything."

"They knew Daniel."

Edward didn't answer.

Ethan's voice rose.

"You heard what Richard said."

"I did."

"He said my father was taken."

"I know."

"Then why are you acting like this is nothing?"

Edward's expression softened.

"Because twenty years ago, I believed the wrong people."

Ethan stopped.

Edward continued quietly.

"I won't make that mistake again."

He looked at the shattered window.

"Not with you."

At 2:00 a.m., the dealership was still surrounded by police.

The employees had gone home.

The investigators remained.

Richard was taken to a secure location for questioning.

Clara refused to leave.

And Ethan sat alone in the showroom.

He was staring at the black leather chairs when Edward approached.

"You should sleep."

"I can't."

"I know."

Ethan looked at him.

"Did Daniel really die?"

Edward didn't answer immediately.

"I buried my son."

"That wasn't my question."

Edward sat beside him.

"I don't know anymore."

Ethan nodded slowly.

"Neither do I."

For several minutes, they sat in silence.

Then Edward reached into his coat.

He removed an old photograph.

It showed Daniel standing beside Michael.

They were laughing.

Behind them was a dealership under construction.

Ethan studied the image.

"They were friends."

"More than friends."

Edward sighed.

"They were brothers."

"What happened?"

"Money."

Ethan frowned.

"Money?"

"That's what everyone said."

Edward stared at the photograph.

"Daniel discovered that someone was stealing from the company. Michael helped him investigate."

"Samuel?"

"No."

"Richard?"

"Maybe."

"Who then?"

Edward looked at him.

"That's what the black ledger was supposed to tell us."

Ethan frowned.

"The black ledger?"

Edward nodded.

"My son kept one."

"What was in it?"

"Everything."

"Accounts?"

"Names."

"Transactions?"

"Bribes."

Ethan's eyes widened.

"How much?"

Edward smiled bitterly.

"Enough to destroy half the people who attended our grand opening."

"Where is it?"

Edward looked toward the locked executive offices.

"I thought it was destroyed."

"Who destroyed it?"

"Samuel."

Ethan sat forward.

"You know that?"

"I was told."

"By whom?"

Edward looked away.

"Samuel."

Ethan stared at him.

"And you believed him?"

Edward's silence was answer enough.

At 3:15 a.m., Edward ordered the executive archive opened.

The archive was hidden beneath the dealership.

Most employees didn't even know it existed.

A steel door stood behind a false wall.

Inside were twenty years of contracts, tax records, employee files, property documents, and old photographs.

The air smelled of dust and paper.

Clara entered first.

"Where should we begin?"

Edward pointed toward the shelves.

"Daniel's files."

Ethan followed.

They searched for nearly an hour.

Nothing.

Then Ethan noticed a wooden cabinet.

One drawer was slightly open.

He pulled it.

Empty.

Except for a small brass key.

He picked it up.

"Edward."

The old man approached.

He recognized it instantly.

"That's Daniel's."

"What does it open?"

Edward turned the key over.

A number had been engraved on the metal.

17.

Clara looked around.

"Seventeen what?"

Edward walked toward the back wall.

"There."

A row of old lockers stood against the wall.

Each had a number.

He stopped at seventeen.

The key fit.

The lock clicked.

Ethan opened the door.

Inside was a single black book.

No label.

No title.

Just a worn leather cover.

Edward stared at it.

"The ledger."

For several seconds, nobody touched it.

Then Edward slowly picked it up.

It was heavier than it looked.

Dust covered the cover.

The corners were worn.

A thin metal clasp kept it closed.

Edward opened it.

The first page contained a date.

January 14, 2003.

Below it, a sentence.

If I disappear, follow the money.

Ethan felt a chill.

"Daniel wrote that."

Edward nodded.

They turned the page.

Names.

Numbers.

Dates.

Companies.

Initials.

Everything was handwritten.

Clara took photographs of each page.

"This is financial evidence."

Edward kept reading.

The first pages showed small transactions.

Five thousand.

Ten thousand.

Twenty-five thousand.

Then the numbers grew.

One hundred thousand.

Three hundred thousand.

Seven hundred thousand.

Ethan looked at one column.

"What does S.G. mean?"

Edward stared.

"Samuel Grant."

Silence.

Clara looked up.

"Are you sure?"

Edward nodded.

"Very."

Ethan turned another page.

There were dozens of entries beside Samuel's initials.

Payments.

Withdrawals.

Transfers.

Some were marked:

PERSONAL

Others:

CASH

And several had one word beside them.

MISSING.

Ethan whispered:

"He was stealing."

Edward's face hardened.

"For years."

The first major entry was dated eight months after Daniel founded the company.

Samuel had transferred $80,000 from a dealership account into a private investment account.

Then another $120,000.

Then $300,000.

The amounts continued.

Every year.

Every quarter.

Sometimes every month.

Clara began calculating.

"Mr. Whitmore."

"What?"

She looked at him.

"Do you want the estimate?"

"Yes."

She swallowed.

"Samuel appears to have diverted approximately $11.4 million."

Ethan stared at her.

"Eleven million?"

"At minimum."

Edward closed his eyes.

"Over how long?"

"Fourteen years."

Ethan shook his head.

"How did nobody notice?"

Clara answered:

"He hid the money through vendor payments."

Edward looked at the ledger.

"Exactly."

Ethan pointed to another page.

"What about this?"

Clara leaned over.

A payment of $450,000.

Recipient:

Marlowe Automotive Consulting LLC.

Ethan's stomach tightened.

"The same company."

Clara nodded.

"Yes."

Edward's expression changed.

"But the ledger is dated fourteen years ago."

Ethan looked at him.

"So Marlowe existed before Richard created it."

Clara froze.

"That's impossible."

Edward turned the page.

The same company appeared again.

And again.

And again.

The name was everywhere.

For years.

Long before the company was officially incorporated.

Clara whispered:

"Then Marlowe wasn't the shell company."

"What was it?"

"The shell company was created to hide an older operation."

Ethan looked at Edward.

"Who started it?"

Edward didn't answer.

They turned another page.

A name appeared.

S.G.

But underneath it was another set of initials.

R.H.

Richard Hale.

Ethan felt sick.

"Both of them."

Edward nodded slowly.

"Samuel wasn't working alone."

The deeper they went, the uglier the truth became.

Samuel had been siphoning money for fourteen years.

But Richard had been helping him for almost as long.

They had created fake invoices.

Overcharged customers.

Manipulated trade-ins.

Hidden commissions.

Moved company assets.

Used property accounts to disguise losses.

But there was something worse.

A page near the middle of the ledger had been marked with a red line.

At the top:

DANIEL KNOWS.

Underneath:

MICHAEL KNOWS.

Then:

EDWARD DOES NOT KNOW.

Ethan stared at the words.

His hands began trembling.

Clara read aloud.

"Daniel discovered the missing money."

She looked at Edward.

"Then Michael joined the investigation."

Edward nodded.

The next line was underlined twice.

Samuel believes Daniel will expose everything.

The next page contained a date.

The night of the accident.

Ethan stopped breathing.

There were three names.

Daniel.

Michael.

Samuel.

Then one final sentence.

Richard has been instructed to handle the aftermath.

Edward's hand tightened around the ledger.

"He knew."

"Who?"

"Richard."

Ethan stared.

"And Samuel."

Edward nodded.

"Yes."

The next page was missing.

Ripped out.

Clara looked at the binding.

"Someone removed it recently."

Edward shook his head.

"No."

He touched the torn edge.

"This happened twenty years ago."

Ethan looked at him.

"How do you know?"

"Because the paper has aged."

He paused.

"But whoever removed it knew exactly what they were looking for."

They continued.

At the back of the ledger, the handwriting changed.

It was no longer Daniel's.

It was Samuel's.

Ethan immediately noticed.

"That's his handwriting."

Edward stared.

"You're sure?"

"I've seen him sign hundreds of documents."

Clara compared the writing with old records.

She nodded.

"It's a match."

The entries became increasingly personal.

Samuel wrote about payments.

People.

Threats.

Meetings.

Then one entry made Ethan's blood run cold.

Michael refused to cooperate.

Another:

Daniel won't stop investigating.

Another:

Whitmore must never know.

Then:

If Daniel survives the accident, we have a problem.

Ethan stared at the words.

"Survives?"

Edward's face went pale.

"He wasn't supposed to survive."

The next entry was even worse.

Michael took him.

Ethan looked up.

"What does that mean?"

Edward shook his head.

"I don't know."

Clara turned the page.

There was no further explanation.

Only a location.

Old Ridge Medical Center.

A date.

And one name.

Dr. Aaron Bell.

Ethan immediately stood.

"Find him."

Clara nodded.

"I'm already searching."

At 5:40 a.m., Clara found the address.

The medical center had closed fifteen years earlier.

The building had been demolished.

But Dr. Bell had not disappeared.

He had moved to Oregon.

Edward immediately ordered a private investigator to locate him.

Ethan looked at the ledger.

"There's something else."

He turned back several pages.

A small entry had been written in Samuel's handwriting.

E.M.

Next to it:

WATCH THE BOY.

Ethan froze.

"Who's E.M.?"

Edward looked at the initials.

"Ethan Miller."

The room became silent.

"But I was a child."

Edward stared at the page.

"Yes."

"Why would Samuel write my initials?"

Clara looked at the date.

"How old were you then?"

Ethan calculated.

"Ten."

Edward's face hardened.

"Someone was watching you."

"Why?"

Nobody answered.

Then Ethan noticed something beneath the initials.

A small notation.

He doesn't know.

Ethan felt a chill run through him.

"Know what?"

Edward closed the ledger.

"We'll find out."

At 7:00 a.m., they finally found the missing page.

Not physically.

Digitally.

Clara had discovered a scanned copy in an old server backup.

She opened it.

The missing page appeared on the screen.

At the top:

THE ACCIDENT

Below it:

Daniel survived.

Ethan stopped breathing.

Edward gripped the table.

The next line:

Michael took him before Samuel could reach the hospital.

Then:

They disappeared together.

Ethan looked at Edward.

"Your son survived."

Edward's eyes filled with tears.

"For how long?"

The document didn't say.

Instead, there was one final note.

If Daniel returns, the company will be destroyed.

Ethan frowned.

"Why?"

Clara zoomed in.

At the bottom of the page was a handwritten sentence.

Because Daniel knows who really owns Marlowe.

Edward whispered:

"Who?"

Clara shook her head.

"The rest is missing."

Ethan stared at the screen.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Nobody spoke.

"Hello?"

Silence.

Then a man's voice.

Older.

Weak.

Barely audible.

"Ethan."

His heart stopped.

He knew the voice.

He had heard it only in childhood recordings.

But he knew it.

"Dad?"

Edward stood immediately.

Ethan's hand began trembling.

"Is that you?"

The voice whispered:

"Don't trust Edward."

The call ended.

Ethan stared at the phone.

Edward's face changed.

"What did he say?"

Ethan looked at him.

"He said not to trust you."

Edward took a step backward.

Then the lights in the archive went out.

Clara shouted.

Something crashed in the darkness.

When the emergency lights returned, the black ledger was gone.

Only one page remained on the table.

A handwritten message.

YOU FOUND THE LEDGER.

Below it:

NOW FIND THE MAN WHO WROTE IT.

Ethan looked at Edward.

Edward looked at the empty space where the ledger had been.

Then Ethan noticed something on the floor.

A single black button.

The same kind worn by the old man’s battered coat.

He picked it up.

Edward stared at it.

"What?"

Ethan slowly closed his hand around the button.

"Someone was here."

Edward looked toward the locked door.

"No."

He shook his head.

"Someone wanted us to think they were."

And somewhere beneath the dealership, a hidden door quietly closed.

The man carrying the black ledger walked into darkness.

He stopped.

Opened the book.

And smiled at the first page.

If I disappear, follow the money.

Then he whispered:

"Daniel was always too clever."

He turned the page.

May you like

And beside the name Ethan Miller, he wrote one new word.

READY.
