Chapter 2: The Weight of Absence
Hours passed in fragments.
Paperwork. Nurses. Quiet instructions.
The world outside the hospital room continued as if nothing extraordinary had happened, even though my entire existence had split into “before” and “after.”
At some point, Rachel leaned closer.
“If he shows his face here,” she said, voice tight, “I swear I won’t let him speak.”
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know what I wanted anymore.
Anger was there.
Sharp, alive.
But underneath it, something colder was forming.
Clarity.
Dr. Brooks returned once more to check on me before his shift ended. He paused near the crib, looking at my daughter with a kind of careful respect, as if she were more than just a newborn.
“She’ll need rest,” he said. Then, after a brief hesitation, added, “And so will you.”
I nodded faintly.
“Doctor…” I began, then stopped.
He looked at me.
I didn’t know why I said it, only that I needed to.
“Thank you.”
For a moment, his expression softened again—just like it had in the storm.
“Don’t thank me,” he said. “Just don’t let anyone make you feel small again.”
Then he left.
