Chapter 4: What Changes in the Quiet

Chapter 4: What Changes in the Quiet
I looked down at my daughter.
She was asleep now, completely unaware that her arrival had detonated an entire life on the other side of the world.
I traced the edge of her blanket with one finger.
“You were right,” I whispered—not sure who I was speaking to anymore. “I can’t trust people.”
But then I corrected myself.
Softly.
Carefully.
“I just can’t trust the wrong ones again.”
Rachel sat beside my bed.
“What are you going to do?”
It was a simple question.
But it didn’t have a simple answer.
Because this wasn’t about revenge anymore.
Not really.
It was about everything I had ignored before 3:07 a.m.
Every silence.
Every absence disguised as work.
Every time I had been made to feel like I was asking for too much when I was only asking for honesty.
I looked at my daughter again.
Then at the door.
And finally, I said it out loud.
“I’m not going back to the life where I disappear for someone else’s convenience.”
May you like
Rachel nodded slowly.
“Good.”
