CHAPTER 2: THE MEDAL THAT SHOULD NOT EXIST

CHAPTER 2: THE MEDAL THAT SHOULD NOT EXIST

No one spoke.

Not the politicians.

Not the billionaires.

Not even Victoria Sterling.

Colonel Marcus Vance held the weathered silver medal in both hands as though it carried the weight of an entire generation.

His thumb brushed across the nearly invisible engraving.

Beneath decades of scratches, one sentence slowly emerged.

"Honor Above Life."

Marcus closed his eyes.

He had seen those words only once before.

Twenty-four years earlier.

Inside a classified military archive.

His voice was barely audible.

"This isn't a medal."

The room remained frozen.

"It is a battlefield identification pendant."

Victoria folded her arms.

"So what?"

Marcus looked at her with quiet disbelief.

"There were only twelve ever issued."

A ripple spread through the ballroom.

"They were never sold."

"They were never awarded publicly."

"They were placed around the necks of the families of twelve operatives whose identities were permanently sealed by the government."

Maya tightened her hold on her crying baby.

"I... I don't understand."

Marcus slowly stood.

His eyes never left her.

"When you were found beside that highway..."

"...someone wasn't abandoning a child."

"They were trying to save one."

The silence became suffocating.

Victoria laughed nervously.

"This is absurd."

Marcus ignored her.

Instead, he reached into his jacket and removed an old leather notebook.

Inside was a faded photograph.

A young military officer stood beside his wife, holding a laughing two-year-old girl.

Around the little girl's neck...

Hung the exact same silver pendant.

Marcus raised the photograph.

May you like

"Maya..."

"...this child is you."
