CHAPTER 3: THE SECRET THEY BURIED
The old veteran walked forward slowly.
Every step seemed to erase another year.
Maya stared at him, confused.
"I don't know you."
He smiled sadly.
"I know."
"You were only two."
Colonel Vance placed a steady hand on the man's shoulder.
"Ladies and gentlemen..."
"This is General Thomas Hale."
The room collectively inhaled.
The legendary commander.
Declared dead twenty-four years ago.
Thomas looked at Maya with trembling eyes.
"I was your father's commanding officer."
The ballroom remained silent.
"He saved my life."
A pause.
"Three times."
Thomas swallowed hard.
"When our convoy was attacked..."
"...your parents protected classified intelligence that would have exposed an international spy network."
"They knew someone inside our own government had betrayed us."
Victoria's confident expression slowly disappeared.
Marcus continued.
"Your parents hid you."
"They gave you the pendant."
"And ordered a trusted officer to take you as far away as possible."
Thomas lowered his head.
"We never found that officer."
"We believed all of you were dead."
Maya's tears finally began to fall.
"My parents..."
"They loved me?"
Thomas nodded.
"Enough to die making sure you could live."
Across the ballroom, Maya's husband finally stepped forward.
But she didn't look at him.
May you like
Not anymore.
Her world had become much larger than the family who had spent years making her feel small.
