Chapter 1: The Truth on the Screen

Chapter 1: The Truth on the Screen
David stepped closer to the ultrasound monitor.
His confidence was gone.
Dr. Sutton pointed at the measurements displayed on the screen.
"Based on the fetal development, this pregnancy is approximately eleven weeks along."
The room became silent.
David frowned.
"What does that mean?"
The doctor turned toward him.
"It means conception occurred before your vasectomy."
Peyton's smirk vanished instantly.
I felt tears sting my eyes.
I had told him.
Again and again.
But he had chosen suspicion over trust.
David shook his head.
"No. That's not possible."
"It is medically documented," Dr. Sutton replied firmly. "And according to your records, you never completed the post-vasectomy fertility test required to confirm sterility."
The color drained from his face.
For the first time, uncertainty appeared in his eyes.
Then the doctor zoomed in again.
"There is something else."
My heart nearly stopped.
"Is my baby okay?"
Dr. Sutton smiled softly.
"Your baby is healthy."
Relief washed over me.
Then she added:
"Both of them."
I blinked.
"What?"
She pointed to the screen.
Two tiny heartbeats.
Two tiny lives.
Twins.
I burst into tears.
Behind me, Peyton stumbled backward into a chair.
David stared at the monitor as if the world had collapsed beneath his feet.
The children he had called bastards...
May you like
Were his.
And there were two of them.
