Chapter 2: The Fall of David Vance

Chapter 2: The Fall of David Vance

News of David's behavior spread faster than he expected.

The partners at my law firm learned how he had frozen our accounts.

The judge overseeing our divorce reviewed the evidence.

The threatening messages.

The financial manipulation.

The public humiliation.

Every ugly detail surfaced.

Meanwhile, Peyton's perfect image started cracking.

An employee from David's company revealed emails showing she had encouraged his paranoia from the beginning.

She had pushed him toward the vasectomy.

She had convinced him I was cheating.

She had even helped draft the social media posts attacking me.

The scandal exploded.

David tried to contact me dozens of times.

I ignored every message.

Then one evening, months later, he appeared outside my house.

Rain soaked his suit.

His shoulders sagged.

He looked nothing like the arrogant man who had walked into my ultrasound appointment.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

I looked at him through the doorway.

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I asked the only question that mattered.

"Did you ever trust me?"

His silence gave me the answer.

I closed the door.

Not out of anger.

But because some damage cannot be undone by apologies.
