CHAPTER 1: AFTER THE SILENCE
The wedding hall didn’t move for several seconds.
No one picked up a fork. No one breathed loudly enough to be noticed. The only sound was the faint rustle of papers still resting on the table in front of Margaret Lawson.
Linda Harris stood calmly beside her daughter, Emily. Her presence no longer looked “out of place”—it looked like something the room had failed to recognize correctly.
Margaret forced a nervous laugh, but it cracked halfway through.
“You’re bluffing,” she said, though her voice had lost its edge. “This is some kind of trick.”
Linda didn’t respond immediately. Instead, she gently adjusted her handbag and looked around the hall—not at the chandeliers, not at the floral arrangements, but at the staff standing near the walls. A few of them lowered their gaze.
Then she spoke.
“This hotel was failing before I bought it,” she said. “It had debts, lawsuits, and a reputation problem. I rebuilt it quietly. Most of you never knew my name because I never needed it known.”
Daniel frowned. “Mom… what is she talking about?”
Margaret didn’t answer.
May you like
Because for the first time, she was looking at the documents closely.
And her hands began to tremble.
